Do your curls not hold? Here are the exact steps I take to get more hold. 1. Start with damp hair and mist water as you go. • 2. Apply a lightweight leave-in. The more cream under your gel, the softer hold you’ll get. • 3. Apply your gel in sections so that way every hair is evenly coated. • 4. Brush style after you’ve applied you gel for even more coverage and definiton. • 5. Scrunch out excess water with a damp hair towel, then go in with a second layer of gel. The less wet your hair is when you’re applying gel, the more hold you’ll get. 6. Always finish with diffusing so you can lock in that cast right away. Adding some layers and face frame shaping can also help hugely with holding curls in for longer as the weight isn’t dragging them down. Did you allow the hair to fully cool before you brushed it out? Heat can get trapped amongst the curls especially at the back, so if you brush out the curls before they have fully cooled down then they will drop lots quicker. Did you curl it tight enough? Curls will always drop, so allow for this. If you want a relaxed loose wave, don’t start on a loose wave, create a tighter small curl to allow for the drop. I always use TWO hold products in my routines - so two gels or a mousse and a gel. Which gel should I test the hold level of next? ⤵️ Running your fingers down a strand is likely to cause frizz with any gel, but normal “scrunching out the crunch” shouldn’t result in frizz if you use a strong enough hold gel. This Curlsmith Soufflé is technically a medium hold gel but I find it to be buildable to a strong hold. I don’t get frizz with it when I scrunch out the cast. If you use too much of this gel though it is difficult to scrunch out and will look piecey. A little goes a long way! The other biggest difference that I notice between light hold gels and strong hold gels, is with strong hold, the curl will usually smooth back into place if you twirl it and hold its shape better. A good formula gel can also be reactivated with just water.
