ZENKUTSU DACHI Zenkutsu dachi – the forward stance – is the most used stance in Shōtōkan. The majority of arm techniques – both defensive and attack techniques – are performed from the Zenkutsu dachi. In other styles, the forward stance is usually performed shorter and higher. The striking technique with the back of the hand uses the power from the snapping motion of the elbow and can be performed in two different forms: horizontal and vertical. Uraken uchi occurs very often in the kata. In combination with Yoko geri keage, the technique is repeatedly used in the kata as a defensive technique (Uraken uke). KIBA DACHI The lateral stance, translated as "horse stance," resembles the position of a rider sitting on a horse. Movements from Kiba dachi are primarily executed sideways. This stance frequently appears in katas and is particularly characteristic of the Tekki series (shodan, nidan, and sandan).
