Parakarry injured in Paper Mario
Parakarry with the Injured status

Injured is a status effect in Paper Mario that exclusively affects the partner that Mario currently has out. It prevents the afflicted partner from taking any turns and is inflicted when a partner takes damage by any means. The number of turns the status lasts is equal to the damage they take. This status cannot be healed by an item, nor can Mario switch the afflicted partner out with another partner while it is in effect.

Since enemies focus their attacks on Mario, there are only two ways for partners to take damage and thus become Injured:

  • The player directs the partner to use an attack that is unsafe against the target enemy, such as having Goombario use Headbonk on a Spiked Goomba or Lava Bubble.
  • The enemy uses an attack that targets the partner specifically, or that strikes both Mario and his partner (sometimes dealing less damage to the partner than to Mario). By Guarding the attack, partners take no damage at all and do not become Injured. Only certain enemies have such attacks:

Both Kooper and Parakarry have a defense of 1, so they take less damage and thus recover from the Injured status one turn sooner.

This status effect does not exist in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as Mario's partners have Heart Points instead.
