In 2011 I visited Connemara for the first time and I immediately fell in love with this region. There were references here and there to The Quiet Man (quite a lot of tourists come to Cong and the surrounding area especially for this film) and I had the idea that it would be a very outdated and old-fashioned film. I work in the tourism industry these days (promoting Ireland as a holiday destination) so this had become a must see.

I finally saw the movie yesterday and it was better than expected! What a wonderful atmosphere, beautiful images and although the story has little to do with it, it is still entertaining. The only thing that bothered me was that Mary Kate let her husband drag her through a meadow and then 'just' happily goes home to prepare dinner. Now that may have to do with the zeitgeist, but given the 'feisty' character of MK earlier in the film, I thought it was a striking (and disturbing) turn.

Of course some (fight) scenes are laughable, but that only adds to the charm. I thought it was a great Friday night movie!

It is not surprising that there is a declining interest in a film like the Quiet Man (weird title by the way, Wayne talks a lot) these days. It comes across as a bit old-fashioned and the film is somewhat farcical (which means an automatic disqualification for modern film audiences these days). In any case, it is better to ignore this film if you do not like old films. Luckily I like it and had a great time.

Ford is the ultimate craftsman and if he also puts some feeling into it, he is capable of a great masterpiece. The craftsmanship and the feeling are good as far as this film is concerned, but I wouldn't attach such a qualification to it. In fact, he actually made a few really great masterpieces now that I think about it. Plenty of very strong films.

But before I lose track. It is a fun, warm and colorful film, and it is also clearly steeped in nostalgia. The tone is good and the film is amusing in a way that is not very demanding of the viewer. Therein lies the pitfall, it ripples on a bit too much without becoming really special. I couldn't really find the special moments or scenes.

I'm not much of a John Wayne fan. He clearly has screen presence and charisma, but that's about it. A decent love scene, for example, I never saw him play. That's what happened to me here. He conveys the love for O'Hara quite convincingly. I didn't think he was an old man here either, in the movies I saw of him that came after that, I thought he was.

4 stars. Another fine film from one of the most important filmmakers of all time.

You will rarely have seen a movie with so many babbling brooks. In this romantic classic, John Ford takes you to the west coast of Ireland, where the tranquility of emerald green lawns is disturbed only by the sound of Roman Catholic muttering prayers, and the hard footsteps of the Duke, John Wayne , who returns to his homeland as a yankee. His arrival shakes the village and makes the heart of Maureen o'Hara, the woman whose red hair was specially invented for the color film, beat faster.

As often with John Ford films, an interesting premise (man-with-secret returns) is quickly buried under a kind of ultra-popular, crazy entertainment interspersed with deadly serious scenes. And even now I soon didn't care much anymore. The plot ripples back and forth from a lovely station novel with Walt Disney as the architect of Ireland, to farce with pastors falling into rivers, to a warning video for domestic violence. 2.5*

Pay special attention to the stick that John Wayne is offered by an old lady.
