Quite a strong frame story, which also gives a glimpse into how certain rituals of some Aboriginal tribes could (have) proceeded. They are rightly reluctant to let Westerners fully share in their own affairs.

A number of those tribes have even become extinct before the first Westerner ever set foot on the bottom of the continent. Their rituals, the interpretation of what they left behind (rock carvings and other artifacts) are lost to everyone.

The film also gains strength from the images of nature, the way in which the tribes survive in that nature and the fact that the entire cast consists of members of the original population of Australia, in other words: amateurs in the film field.

Humor from the film, among the Aborigines themselves, also hits back at the West.

Themes of the film touch on (consequences of) jealousy and patience, among other things.

A few years ago also the fascinating Charlie's Country (Film, 2013) also with Aboriginal people in the leading role. These 10 canoes offer a broader insight into a number of indigenous tribes, highlighting a number of cultural customs.

The approach with the voice-over is very documentary-like. The many images of the various tribes and their customs are prominently featured. Their painted naked bodies were cleverly accentuated and as a viewer you go along with their thinking and cultural customs. It gets a bit funny when superstition also plays a role in which you die in agony if you burn an individual's poop.

Interesting to have seen without being memorable. The film lacked a clear line or direction. Well shot with beautiful nature images.

Totally unknown film, encountered at the thrift store and I felt like taking a chance with this special film that was probably an unknown topper. The comments and reviews promise a reasonable film in itself, undeniably the product has some strong features, but it does not fully come out.

The beginning may certainly be there with the beautiful nature and locations, yet the story does not want to get going very smoothly, which is mainly due to the narrative style in that first phase, because the so-called told story is regularly interrupted while the men are at work . But luckily that is improving, it is also interesting to see the customs, the distribution, but also, for example, how they make the canoes, the whole also has a bit of humor, but it mainly exudes a certain mystique that I quite like strongly underlined by the scenes with the Shaman. It shows a beautiful picture of old ideas, superstitions, customs, logic, and fear. All in all not wrong...

But still sand regularly gets into the engine, as far as the beginning is concerned, it is that constant interruption of the story told, the middle part is then okay, where the interest simply slowly decreases towards the end of the film. And I find it difficult to say exactly what that is, is it all just a bit too vague, or unclear, or is it just missing a little extra jeu...? It is difficult to put your finger on where exactly it is lacking with this film in the final phase. I can therefore only say that the film is not very good, not very bad either, that there are certain phases of interest, but that the film is especially special with the striking image of such a tribe in such a time. So three stars from me for the effort.
