Exactly a century and a half ago, Louisa May Alcott wrote the semi-autobiographical novel "Little Women". To my knowledge, the book has been made into a movie at least four times before. With the exception of the version that came out last year, I've seen all those movies (1933, 1949, and 1994). They are all beautiful films. Logical, because it is a beautiful, moving story.

However, those earlier films are surpassed by this impressive adaptation by director/screenwriter Greta Gerwig. She has succeeded wonderfully in giving the story some contemporary accents, as feminist Alcott may have intended at the time.

The result is enchanting. It's a beautiful, compelling film. A good feeling film pur sang. In addition to Gerwig's script and direction, this is partly due to a rock-solid cast, which delivers excellent acting across the board. Without wanting to do anyone any justice, this is especially true for Saoirse Ronan (obviously), Florence Pugh and Laura Dern.

Truly a gem of a movie.

I'm a fan of Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Greta Gerwig anyway. And the film has been praised several times with the frustration that it regularly failed to be nominated for film awards (for what it's worth) or let alone win. So high expectations when I went to see the movie.

The film is primarily a story and Greta Gerwig focuses on the characters. Moreover, it exudes a style of romance and beautiful costumes. But it's not, this is the story of 4 women who grow up with standards and values in a world of poverty and wealth with certain expectations that don't always align with their dreams. 4 completely different women who gradually walk their own path. Greta Gerwig has also succeeded in creating 4 beautiful characters who together exude a family chemistry. They are clearly sisters, despite their differences.

You also see the characters struggle with their dreams, ideals and norms and values. Actually, the four actresses (including Laura Dern, whom I like better here than in Marriage Story) shine in their own way. And again I've become a bit more of a fan of Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh sticking out some. A movie that made me emotional at times. Beautiful to see. Enjoy more than 2 hours.

Under mother's wing? Previously in Morpheus' arms.. Certainly the first half I nodded. Annoyingly cheerful stuff, but mostly boring.. Good women, blegh! The scene of them sacrificing their Christmas dinner to a poor neighborhood family living in a dilapidated house made me slightly sick. I got such a 'We are the world, we are the children..' feeling. If they go to that house with baskets full of food, then I think: just invite those people to your home, there was plenty of room, those children can also run around carefree and romp and play with real toys. Later one of the sisters contracted scarlet fever, from a baby from that poor family, very sad all, but how it ends with the baby is no longer discussed.
At night there is a constant yellowish glow over the girls' faces indoors. That creates a cozy and cozy atmosphere, but it's a mystery to me where exactly that glow comes from. There is nowhere to be seen a fireplace or even a single candle and yet everything is bathed in a warm light. I actually think the light in a costume film like Dangerous Liaisons is much nicer, because it feels more realistic.
That one from Call me by your name once again portrays such an artificially shy character. Streep does a decent job, a bit bitchy Meryl Streep from Death Becomes Her, but is also quite caricatured and definitely not Maggie Smith, unfortunately she only comes by twice. The rest of the cast actually plays very neatly and within the lines, which also fits the film.
Admittedly, the film gets a bit more face for roughly the last three quarters of an hour, but then it is already too late. Life is too short to be angry at one's sisters.. Brave shit.
