Beautiful and poignant film about the drama that unfolds in the countryside in France (and in other countries): every day a farmer commits suicide in France, as we read at the end before the credits. We learn that the modern agricultural business, in which the farmer has become an entrepreneur caught up in a system of economies of scale and dependence on the market, puts the farmer's neck in a noose, as it were. But unlike Ken Loach's films, social criticism is not paramount here: the film is primarily a psychological drama in which we feel the pain of the family. The fact that this works well is partly because the film comes across as very realistic (which it has in common with Loach's films). The fact that the film tells the story of the director himself who lost his own father in this way will certainly have helped.

The slow death of the farmer.

A taboo-breaking and autobiographical film that has quite intense moments. I sometimes wonder why there are still people who want to run a farm, when you know the problems they face. It is certainly a profession for which I have great respect. Pierre Jarjean enthusiastically takes over the family business in the 1970s. After a period of prosperity, the problems pile up : mountain of debt grows, the increase in scale does not work, a barn burns down. After that the film becomes very melodious and actually loses the focus on underlying causes that do matter but are forgotten here: low income, too many imposed standards, mountains of paperwork. I suppose the director was mainly interested in the human aspect, but everything has a cause. Well acted by Canet, for whom this is his favorite role.

Particularly strong drama about the farmer who rooted and plowed on, sometimes against his better judgement. Fighting against windmills, against the ties from Brussels with their many rules, about economies of scale and associated technological innovations that go beyond logical common sense and lead to immense investments that result in bottomless pits.

The credits about the suicide rates of farmers in France were also very confronting and it was striking that the father of the director also received these statistics. A kind of tribute or statement to his father, depending on which perspective you look at it from.

Despite the problems that seem increasingly insurmountable with each scene, there is also a lot of attention for the family situation. A warm family with a lot of love for his wife and children. The difficult distant relationship also with his father, the primeval farmer who thinks his daughter-in-law is too little for the farmer's trade with her diploma and involvements. A man who sees being sick as being lazy, especially when it concerns not physically, but mentally. A man who would rather throw his legacy into the stream than help his son. “Should I just give away my inheritance that I have been rooting for day and night for free?” Hard and striking … Strong!
