My first 5 weeks at Dremio

My first 5 weeks at Dremio

Going back to my days in college, I always craved a way of making data-informed decisions; gaining insights from, or even just simply geeking out with data. But, it wasn’t until about eight years ago that I truly realized what that meant. I joined Tableau to “help people see and understand data”. This is where I got to witness  data democratization in action. I encountered customers utilizing the power of insights—from things like calculating wait times in an ER room to calculating royalties for movies.

I started using the  tools we were creating to give me insights into my own work; ranging from building trends for velocity of sprints and burndown of the backlog, tracking “time to fix” metrics for escalations, and creating visual analysis reports that highlighted  where defects came from. On a personal level I got insight into my household finances. I downloaded real estate data and built out visualizations for where looked best to buy our next home.

The BI use cases that need data are limitless. This is the beauty of our industry when it comes to democratization of data. So, after having spent  a significant portion of my career developing capabilities at the BI application layer, I decided to move upstream, which is what led me to Dremio. Today my mission, Dremio’s mission is to make corporate data as easy to use as our personal data. Leading to removing barriers, accelerating time to insight, putting control in the hands of the user.

Tools like Tableau and PowerBI need Dremio to make data more accessible, instantly  queryable, and secure at scale. If data is the new oil, Dremio is the oil rig—and the new open data architecture and data lakehouse are the oil fields. I believe this is the new frontier and so wanted to be part of that journey. Dremio is very well positioned to lead from the forefront, to help customers as they move towards an open data architecture—where storage and compute are separated.  Dremio stores user data  in open source file and table formats (like Apache Parquet and Apache Iceberg), allowing our customers to utilize different engines for their needs. Dremio is one of the most complete SQL engines available today. Dremio Cloud sky's the limit, making our software that much more accessible to our customers.

I started here at the end of October 2021. And so far in a short 5 weeks, it feels like I have found my new home. The culture is mission driven, people top-notch. Folks here have the opportunity to change the paradigm of the data landscape. It’s an opportunity to make a difference not only in your and your families lives, but for our customers. Ultimately they, our customers matter the most.

So, how about joining me and #TeamGnarly https://lnkd.in/ebUWvDWF

"I downloaded real estate data and built out visualizations for where looked best to buy our next home." - No way! I did the exact same thing in 2016 https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/benny3770/viz/HomePricesbyBR/Dashboard1 Now only if I could have used some data virtualization technology that could scrape live data off Zillow and make the dashboards real time (and compare with history via time travel) ... 😃
