John Beatty reposted thisJohn Beatty reposted thisI’m extremely excited to finally reveal what I’ve been working on for the last year and a half: Reve. First of all, I’ve been leading a double life. While working on creative platforms and tooling at Adobe for twenty years, building the Stable Diffusion Photoshop plugin, running product at Stability (DreamStudio and REST APIs), and creating Concept.art (which became Reve), I also published four novels and optioned several stories for film and TV adaptation. While I’m an extremely passionate writer, I’ve always found it frustrating to be restricted to text. When I’m world-building, I see places in my head that don’t exist, objects that haven’t yet been invented, and people who I’ve never met. I’ve always wanted writing to be more multi-modal — to engage more of my senses. When pitching stories and trying to communicate my vision, I don’t want to storyboard with shots from other movies or stock photos. I want images directly out of my imagination. When working with artists to design book covers, I’ve always wanted to communicate with visual prototypes rather than just comps. Attached images: 1) A machine from my latest novel, SCORPION, capable of generating gravitational waves. For the first time, I was able to take it from words to pixels. 2) A character from SCORPION named Henrietta Yi, a PhD candidate (and Pokémon fanatic) who finds a mysterious Shakespearean message while doing research at the Large Hadron Collider. 3) One of my favorite scenes from SCORPION, perfectly visualized for the first time. 4) Book cover ideation and variation. Reve Image is still just a preview, but we think it’s so good (and so much fun) that we wanted to share it with the world — and to start building in public. While technology won't replace firefighters, we can empower them with more tools to help them keep fires small. We're actively fundraising and continue to look for other forms of support and collaboration as well. #wildfire #firetech #dronesJohn Beatty reposted thisAs we have seen time and again, fast-moving wildfires can be incredibly difficult and costly to stop once they are established. The best time to stop those fires is while they’re still small, and in fact, firefighters are successful at doing just that, most of the time. But sometimes, they just can’t get there fast enough, and those fires can go on to cause massive destruction. It is clear that keeping fires small even more of the time can have massive impact. A recent report released by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation found that reducing response times to wildfires by 15 minutes could reduce catastrophic wildfires by 3-7% and generate $3.5-8.2 Billion in economic benefit (link in comment). But how do we reduce response times by 15 minutes? At Ponderosa.ai, Inc., we’re developing the FireSparrow fire suppression drone swarm, which could be prepositioned in places of highest risk, particularly in the Wildland-Urban Interface. With the ability to take off autonomously in seconds and arrive in minutes, they could slow fires enough to buy firefighters precious time. Furthermore, we believe we can offer such a technology at a cost that makes it affordable at the local level — where they’re needed most. We’re excited that San Bernardino County Fire Protection District Fire Chief Dan Munsey, MPA, EFO, CFO shares our vision, and we’re incredibly grateful for his collaboration in bringing this new capability into the hands of firefighters!

John Beatty shared thisJohn Beatty shared thisDear colleagues & friends, By now everyone should've seen what is going on in Ukraine - it's a blatant invasion of a sovereign country, something no one thought possible in 21st century, but that is what is really going on - civilians hit by airstrikes, hiding in subway stations or fleeing their homes fearing for the lives of their children. Thank you all who reached out to offer support and I thought I’d summarize some options for this community here: * Outreach - please continue spreading awareness about the situation. Especially within the Russian population. Sanctions and other outside forces have shown a limited effect on Putin so far - a real opposition from inside Russia is something that can make a crucial impact. Propaganda is strong in Russia - I watched their local channels for the last few days - it’s ugly, and it works. If you’re in Russia or have ties to RF - you can make an impact by spreading the real news, share the non-propagandist news sources with the Russian population. The regime in Russia is harsh - opposition leaders are being barred or killed, most attempts of public action quickly and violently dispersed, people are afraid. But so are people in Ukraine’s subways hiding from real war. A critical mass of opposition will break the regime, maybe this is the time! * Support from the west - advocate for real support from other countries & alliances. Ukraine is fighting this war on it’s own for all of Europe and the world. It’s unlikely any alliance or country would help with military action, in fear of WWIII, but there are things that can help: a) military equipment; b) economic pressure on Russia; c) financial aid to Ukraine. You can help by spreading the word and advocating for action in your circles and your country. * Financial support - https://savelife.in.ua/ is a legit fund that supports the Ukrainian Army if you’d like to donate. John Beatty liked thisJohn Beatty liked thisThis week I had the incredible opportunity to join San Bernardino County Fire Protection District's Jeff Alexy and a few other UAS operators on the first day of Los Angeles County Fire Department's Spring training exercises. The day was perhaps one of the most comprehensive previews of the range of roles drones could be playing on the fireground in the near future: Jeff flew the Ponderosa.ai FireSparrow Mk10 to make water drops on hot spots, and used a DJI Fly Cart to deliver a hose pack to a hilltop. A Drone Amplified engineer demonstrated their latest IGNIS III Mini aerial ignition system built on Freefly Systems's Astro platform. And of course LACoFD had their own drone providing situational awareness to the incident commanders. Water-dropping, heavy-lift transport, aerial ignitions, situational awareness -- these are all applications that we aim to consolidate in a single platform with our FireSparrow Mk10 in the future, but these demos provided invaluable insights into how each of those operations are, or may be, conducted in the real world, and what we need to do to truly deliver value in those areas. On a personal note, it was simply awesome to see the FireSparrow Mk10 on the fireground and actually flying over a real fire. A training fire, yes, but a real fire nonetheless, among real fire engines and firefighters (and even a FireHawk helicopter!). What at one point seemed like an implausibly far-fetched vision, has become a reality. And, of course, this isn't the end goal but just the starting point: the work to prove value, earn trust, and to truly deserve a place on the fireline is still ahead of us. In the world of fintech, five years can feel like a lifetime, yet it feels like I am still just at the beginning of my journey here. When I started my career, I was driven by the single goal to help companies navigate the complexities of expanding internationally. Today, I’m lucky enough to do exactly that, but on a scale I never could have imagined. Beyond just crossing borders, I’ve become deeply motivated by the broader challenge of building the economic infrastructure for the internet. John Beatty liked thisJohn Beatty liked thisSuper excited to share that my team (Filip Kujawa, Maxwell Henderson, and Het Satasiya) placed 2nd at Robohacks! Hour of Code reached hundreds of millions of people and changed who gets into programming. We think robotics needs that same inflection point. Right now, the barrier to entry is just way too high. So, we built Hour of Robotics, a platform that lets anyone program real robots through a drag-and-drop interface like Scratch, running entirely in the browser. The Innate MARS robot has LiDAR, dual cameras, a drive base, and a 6-DOF arm. Instead of throwing people into complex ROS terminals, we turned everything into visual blocks: movement, arm control, navigation, vision, and speech, all backed by real ROS commands over WebSocket. Here's what you can do: - Pick-and-place through blocks: build full manipulation pipelines visually. Most teams couldn’t get consistent pickups. We were doing it reliably with ~20 "blocks". - Full simulator: test everything in-browser with IK, collision detection, and 3D visualization before touching hardware. - Open vocabulary vision: tell it to find a “red cup” and it will. - Local LLM (Gemma 4) blocks: on-device reasoning, meaning no API costs. We took concepts like inverse kinematics, SLAM, and computer vision, and made them feel simple. That’s the goal.
