Anthropic's Head of Alignment Stress-Testing said something last week that should stop every executive in their tracks. His job is to try to break Anthropic's own safety systems before they fail in the wild. Not a futurist. Not a VC with an incentive to hype the timeline. The person inside the lab who pumps the brakes. He didn't pump the brakes. He said: "Recursive self-improvement, in the broadest sense, is not a future phenomenon. It is a present phenomenon." Present tense. Now. Already. Anthropic's CSO Jared Kaplan added: fully automated AI research is less than a year away. 70–90% of the code behind future Anthropic models is already being written by Claude itself. The machine is building its successor. Today. Same week: 81% of U.S. physicians are using AI — double the 2023 rate — with no governance framework to match. Meta announced 20%+ layoffs explicitly to offset AI costs. The adoption curve collapsed. The governance infrastructure hasn't been built. I wrote about what this means for organizations still in wait-and-see mode. The question isn't whether you're ready. It's whether you know what readiness actually requires right now. I’ve been working on the #AAuth .NET SDK (still in draft), and wrote a blog post to explain the IAM problem space around agentic delegation in a simpler way for folks new to the domain. Agents are easy to talk about in abstract terms: “let the AI do things for me.” But the moment an agent touches real accounts, APIs, money, messages, or data, the hard questions show up: who is the agent, who is it acting for, what exactly was it allowed to do, and how do we know when that authority should stop? The post uses a parent sending a kid to the corner shop (90s themed) on the family account as the analogy. It maps surprisingly well to agent identity, delegated authority, consent, missions, revocation, sub-agents, call chains, and audit. AAuth is used as the reference model, but this is more of an informal introduction to the problem domain. Sharing in case others find the framing useful. I believe your knowledge should outlast any software. So I created the Plaintext Commons and published its manifesto at plaintextcommons.org. The idea: instead of keeping notes, documents, and ideas inside apps, you keep them in a folder of plain text files that you control. Tools become interchangeable assistants. The corpus — your corpus — is the stable foundation. Plain text and folders become a universal interface — for humans, tools, and AI agents alike. Everyone reads from and writes to the same place, in a format that will still work decades from now. The manifesto outlines nine principles and three laws for this approach: files over apps, plain text as default, previewed and reversible writes, no exports or migrations needed because the folder *is* the platform. On a related note, I recently signed the Resonant Computing manifesto (resonantcomputing.org) and was genuinely thrilled to see my name on the same page as Kevin Kelly, Simon Willison, and Tim O'Reilly.
