I think we adding something new to the convo this year by unboxing therapy.Ashley Womble, MPH shared thisThis Mental Health Awareness Month, we're unboxing therapy — cutting through the gaps, unknowns, and stereotypes that keep people from taking the first step. Most people come to their first appointment carrying a quiet worry — that they should have brought medical records, or already know what they want to work on, or be ready to commit to something long before they know what that looks like. They don't need any of that. The first session is a 60-minute biopsychosocial (BPS) assessment — a conversation. A licensed clinican will ask about their history, what's been going on, and what they'd like to see change. No homework required. No decisions to make ahead of time. The purpose of this time is for the patient and clinician to decide together what the work should be. That distinction matters — for patients, and for the people who care for them. If you have patients who've been putting off taking that first step, this information might be worth sharing. In many cases, families are the first to notice that something isn’t right. But they often don’t know what they’re seeing, what it means, or where to go for help. For healthcare professionals, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Early signs of bipolar disorder are frequently misunderstood or misattributed—leading to delayed diagnosis and gaps in care. Increasing awareness among patients and their support systems can play a critical role in improving outcomes. If you’ve ever worked in healthcare marketing, you know the stakes: attribution has to be right, segmentation has to be clean, reporting has to hold up. Ja-Rey didn’t just manage those systems — he improved them. He is smart, dependable, and he does not stop looking for the right answer. I’m sharing this because Ja-Rey is moving to the Philippines. His role at Brave Health isn’t one we’re able to continue internationally. Trust me, I would keep him if I could. If you need a right hand data guy, today is your lucky day.

Thank you to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for blessing the Progress Pride Flag, and for always taking care of our community 💓 This month, I challenge all ally’s to find a way to visibly show up for the queer community. We need your active solidarity through visible signs of safety (having a small pride flag pin on your work lanyard shows us we are safe), through changed behavior (think about how you can create safer spaces for us in work/at community events), and through fiscal support (find a local LGBTQ+ organization to donate to). 👊🏽 The County of Los Angeles is strengthened by the diverse, unique, spectacular queer people that contribute in their own unique way. While I have had the pleasure of working with you for many years now, I can't wait to work more closely with you at edc.org!Ashley Womble, MPH reacted on thisLast Friday was my final day working as a Federal official at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It has been an incredible honor to work together with other dedicated public servants to reduce suicide in America .Over the past 22 years ,SAMHSA has emerged as the epicenter of national suicide prevention efforts in the United States including two programs that have evidence of reducing suicide among youth and young adults. The Garrett Lee Smith Youth suicide prevention grants were the first national suicide prevention grant programs in the United States and have shown reductions in youth suicide in counties implementing grant funded activities. More recently evidence has emerged that increased utilization of 988 is associated with reduced deaths by suicide among youth. Thousands of suicidal people per day who were not previously able to access help are now receing it .To have been a part of these and other efforts has been a privilege ,including being part of developing the 2012 and 2024 National Strategies for Suicide Prevention, and working with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs to reduce suicide among those who have served and are serving to keep our nation safe . While I am leaving the Federal government ,I am not leaving the field. I have started a half time position as Deputy Director for Strategy for the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. This will allow me to pursue a range of activities to continue to contribute to reducing suicide in America.
