Check out this article in pre-print on a study from OHT and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani’s Data Sciences in Global Health PhD candidates Danny Muzata, A Shivram, and colleagues, which explores how the malaria parasite, 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮, adapts to resist antifolate drugs used in treatment. Our ability to cure malaria infections is constantly under threat due to drug resistance. This study reveals how 𝘗. 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮 adapts by altering a key enzyme targeted by antifolate drugs. The team identified enzyme regions essential for stability and pinpointed mutations that help the parasite survive. They also developed a model to predict how this enzyme changes under drug pressure, mapping the pathways the parasite follows to develop resistance.
