In open source and research software, shutting down, changing gears, or moving on from projects is difficult to do with grace. There are ways to make this easier: document your work, use a taxonomy of succession planning techniques, and clarifying your governance process. There's no great guide on how to do these things, though! So, I am starting up a working group with a bounded time-line (one year) to see if we can build a resource for improving this process for everyone. If you're interested in helping out, join us!
