Network monitoring has traditionally been built around a simple assumption: Most problems come from outside. In this guest post Andrea Sordello asks what we can learn by observing the traffic that leaves our networks — especially when it does not receive a reply? https://lnkd.in/gu9zTH9u With support from Kai Huang Alessandro Cornacchia Marco Mellia

This guest post by Carlos Martinez Cagnazzo unpacks a short BGP hijack in 2025 that showed how routing security can fail when attackers exploit weaknesses in provider onboarding. Analysis showed that the attacker spoofed the Autonomous System Number (ASN) in a way that avoided creating an invalid state. This choice helped the false announcements propagate. The attacker also redirected traffic through an upstream that was later confirmed to be another victim, not an accomplice. The attacker convinced a multinational upstream provider to enable transit for the hijacked ASN (which we’ll call ‘AS X’). Once the BGP session was active, the attacker used AS X only as transit and injected short announcements from several spoofed origin ASNs behind it. These bursts lasted only minutes and disappeared quickly, which made them difficult to trace. Several broader lessons emerge from this incident, highlighting where current routing security practices can be strengthened. https://lnkd.in/gjTerBGt cc LACNIC

APNIC reposted this
This week, I had the opportunity to speak at an awareness session hosted by TezHost™ for the upcoming ICANN's Universal Acceptance day planned for 22nd April 2026 at NIC, Islamabad. I talked about why UA is important. The role of Internet Society in the development of the internet globally and ISOC Pakistan Islamabad Chapter's initiatives. The Internet Governance Ecosystem in APAC and Pakistan. The efforts APNIC put in APAC Internet Policy Development. Universal Acceptance (UA) is an initiative by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to make sure that all domain names and email addresses work everywhere on the internet—no matter how they look or what language they use. Why it matters? Enable digital inclusion for non-English speakers Support local businesses and identities online Make the internet truly global and accessible Every participation would be a step closer to achieving a more global, more inclusive internet. Software systems deal with time differences constantly. If software simply assumes a monotonically increasing sequence of counter values, then at rollover time, these time differences will become negative, which may cause the code to fail in surprising ways. https://lnkd.in/gzXz6W-E

Routing loops cause packets to circulate between routers. This can congest links, enable #DDoS attacks, and ultimately reduce the stability and reliability of the Internet. The good news is that #IPv6 routing loops are easy to prevent. https://lnkd.in/gNRdRMeR
