Love the old flavours on 'A sanctimonious song' flashing back to reverse tones of Fi or Hand Cranked. BIB10 hits every node just right.

His range is so respectable, it's amazing how some of his stuff can sound like a seedy alleyway, whereas other songs feels like getting smothered in a warm blanket. His singing, at least to me, is hit or miss, but I feel like it wouldn't be the same without the lyrics, and he has definitely gotten better at singing/songwriting over the course of his career. Cheers to you Mr Wilkinson, for a genuinely solid listen!

Vignetting is a solid album, Hand Cranked was Stephen trying out vocals , focusing in a more folksy sound, and in my opinion at least, it didn't work to as great an effect that he thought it would. Now Vignetting is him refining that sound, and it's consistently better. I don't know if its AA good, but it makes for a very pleasant listen.

Personally love Hand Cranked. I'm waiting for Vignetting to be released I think. Warp will do it any moment. Fingers crossed anyways.

It is. Bibio is my favorite artist and I prefer to play his music in my car since that's where my best sound system is.

Heh, that makes sense. Honestly happy listening, and hopefully the next album (?) will be a good one.

Phantom Brickworks was an experimental one-off that sounds nothing like the rest of his work. Ribbons is in many ways a return to his original sound, maybe with a bit of traditional Irish influence added. If you prefer Brickworks, you should listen to another artist, dark ambient in the vein of Tim Hecker or something. I don't mean that in a rude way, just a suggestion.

Ribbons oozes with pure nostalgia and sunny-day atmosphere. This will be on rotation for summer.

Love how the related artists are nothing like Bibio. There's bits and pieces relevant in a few tracks, but the bulk of Bibio feels familiar and strange at the same time. Like a song you forgot from your youth, and one rainy day or walk through the countryside it suddenly comes back to you. Now you remember why you remembered it for so long. You don't know why you forgot it, but you are ever so glad to have it back.

Not an answer to anyone in particular from below Phantom Brickworks discussions, but it's easy to say which music it reminds you of really. There's barely a chance you'd come across and spin this record if you're completely unfamiliar with great ambient / drone works -- but my reckoning is that this album brings something which is unique to introspective character of Bibio already expressed through his previous works. It's rich in texture, and not without a reason, like many music is these days. I feel these compositions actually head somewhere and have strong cathartic potential. Fi and PB accompany each other very well, come to think of it. Cheers!

The new record is like a mix of Tim Hecker, William Basinski and Andy Stott sort of. It's very interesting, soothing but sadly forgettable record. Bibio has evolved.

It doesn't have the same initial impact as say, Silver Wilkinson, but it's so much more stripped back in comparison. It's a complete change in style, minimal and ambient - but I think a positive one. A Mineral Love felt formulaic, so the timing feels right. Whatever comes next should be interesting.

Well said, I was definitely hearing the same things boshkan. Given that it seems to be a concept album based on a visit to an abandoned industrial town, I wonder whether this is a one-off or a permanent stylistic change. Either way I'm sure he'll be making at least some kind of shift in this direction with future releases.

Why can't he just make a cohesive album anymore? A Mineral Love isn't bad, but it bounces all over the place from genre to genre, touching on his old folktronica sound and then straight back into a sample-heavy funk that couldn't be much more different. There's nothing holding it all together, it's jarring. And it's been that way for a while now, Silver Wilkinson had the same problem.

I don't think of Ambivalence Avenue of being that way at all, but maybe I'm just crazy. Phantom Brickworks has been pretty good.

My favorite artist. Finding his album Mind Bokeh at F.Y.E was a miracle for me in 2011. I've never ever been the same since listening to his work.
