Self Esteem is the stage name of Rebecca Lucy Taylor, a British singer, songwriter, and creative powerhouse who is redefining what it means to be a pop star in the 21st century.
Raised in the working-class northern town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Self Esteem is one of pop music's most thrilling truth-tellers. Confronting expectations of femininity, class and ambition, her lyrics are diaristic, her stage shows part pop spectacle, part feminist rally, and her energy screams "this is your permission to take up space."
Before going solo, Taylor was one half of indie-folk duo Slow Club, where she honed her vocal chops and writing skills. In 2017, she shed the politeness, adopted the moniker Self Esteem, and transformed into a glitter-clad feminist force with a drum pad.
Her debut album, 2019's Compliments Please, was a bold, genre-bending manifesto, think pop bangers with spoken-word interludes, gospel harmonies, and lyrics that sounded like text messages from a brutally honest friend. But it was 2021's riotous Prioritise Pleasure (2021) that catapulted her to critical darling status and into the Official Albums Chart for the first time (Number 11). Prioritise Pleasure also earned a Mercury Prize nomination the following year.
In May 2025, the release of A Complicated Woman delivered Self Esteem another new personal best - her first UK Top 10 record, it entered at Number 5 in its opening week.
Outside of music, Taylor has appeared in numerous TV shows including I Hate Suzie, starring Billie Piper, and in 2023-24 also played Sally Bowles opposite Jake Shears in the West End musical revival of Cabaret.
