finally, it's looking like some movement is taking place in the top 40! i love manchild, ik she's seen as overplayed btu i'd say she's up there with the best of the artists ruling the charts the past few years, so i'll happily welcome another number one from her (especially over alex warren). 'just keep watching' is a confusing one because i think tate mcrae has had so many better offerings recently but it's not terrible and i like what she brings to pop music today. 'dior' is your standard summer dance hit, don't hate it but don't love it either, same with 'can't decide'. 'sapphire' is absolutely awful. 'nice to each other' isn't spectacular but it's chill and catchy, olivia dean is obviously very talented too so i'm happy her platform is widening. 'fame is a gun' is one of my favourite songs of the year, super fun and inspired. i'm just happy we're finally getting some new hits!

charli xcx and addison rae have done a song together (von dutch remix), and i’d be open to them collabing again, however charli is easily at her best when she’s doing forward thinking hyperpop like on pop 2, number 1 angel, charli, brat and how im feeling now, so i don’t think david guetta production will give me the song im hoping from charli

linkin park’s nu-metal probably wouldn’t work with metallica’s thrash metal style, but even with imagine dragons’ producer metallica would still find a way to make it good, so i might go with that even if linkin park’s nu metal elements would sound out of place

I also find the upcoming releases for next week not that strong. If, Chargie, and Gold were definately among the better ones. intro song and got teased on tiktok a few weeks before the album. i'd argue it's one of the strongest on there though, just not single or radio material at all

The UK charts are facing a serious longevity issue.

There are currently five songs in the Top 40 that reached their peak in 2024. I’d understand if this was the case a few weeks into the year, but certainly not in the middle of June. ACR doesn’t feel even effective anymore because the lower half of the chart has turned into a dumping ground for older hits, some of them not even from this decade.

On a more positive note, congratulations to Olivia Dean on her highest charting entry to date and I find it fitting that MK’s new single debuted at #17.

Spike island the lead single is a personal favourite, Got To Have Love Is really good, I really liked A Sunset too and Grown Ups was a nice tribute to their late bassist Steve Mackey. I loved the whole album to be fair

I bought three albums this week from Pulp, Addison Rae and Marina. Would have been so nice if "Got To Have Love" and "I <3 You" would have made an appearence in the singles chart - both songs deserve it so much.

Addison Rae’s album is a real positive for the charts today. :)

‘Fame Is A Gun’ looks like it may stick around which is fantastic and ‘Headphones On’ is growing on me a lot as well. The single choices have generally been impressive.

‘New York’ was okay but not one of the highlights for me. I’d rather ‘Times Like These’ or ‘In The Rain’ made it instead.

The former was a remarkable pioneer of funk and soul music, while the latter built a legacy with The Beach Boys that will last for so many generations.

sly stone was legendary in the funk/motown scene. it’s so sad to see a pioneer go like that

i was on discord when someone casually yet sadly announced brian’s death, i literally had to do a google search in case that was clickbait. alas, it was real, and it was heartbreaking. and everyone can all agree pet sounds is one of the greatest albums ever made 

i already said my piece over on the occ article that announced he died, but i hope the two of them rest easy, and i thank them for their contributions to popular music.

Finally, we have a new #1 for the first time since March.

Sure, it may be by an artist who spent 21 weeks at the summit last year and it’s not even among her best songs, but that honestly doesn’t matter to me right now as we desperately needed a change from ‘Snoredinary’.

I just hope we see a lot more movement at the top of the charts throughout the summer.

since march is crazy, it really doesn't feel like it'd been that long. i love manchild though and i don't really get the criticisms, it's up there with my favourites of hers. either way i would rather take 10 weeks of ed sheeran rather than another week of 'ordinary' at the top.
