Even by recent standards this weeks chart is completely stagnant. But it didn’t used to be this way. I’m old enough to remember the top 100 back in the 90’s when it was physical sales and nothing else. The chart back then was never stagnant, every week there was a lot of new songs that would keep the chart fresh. Only occasionally would a song stay at number 1 for weeks or hang around in the top 10.

It wasn’t all great though. Almost every new entry would follow the same trend, whatever position it entered at would tend to be as high as it would get then just fall down the chart. Only now and then would a song chart low then start climbing. So you never got the variety of chart trends that you see now.

But it’s currently badly needing freshened up. Mr Brightside has been in the top 100 since the dawn of time. And who among us can even remember a week when there wasn’t a song in the top 100 from that warbling pest Sabrina Carpenter?

avatar

strangeways_here_we_come

3

Honestly I wish they never invented streaming because it ruined the charts if you still had to go out and buy the song then it would spice the charts up more. Now they can stay in there for years

avatar

faiyaz

1

i get where this point comes from but there's no way the charts would reflect what's actually popular if they didn't count streaming, which would've always come about with technology advancing. it's occ's fault for implementing strange rules around it like acr which keeps the charts anything but fresh, and it's the music industry's fault for not going about streaming well as they've started ignoring talent and pouring all their money into quick tiktok hits, which is numbing the general public's brains when it comes to music. we're at another one of those points in time where something needs to shift

M

Marksey

0

The problem with ACR is far too often it just doesn’t work. Beautiful Things is currently in the top 10 in its 71st week on the chart. I know that’s only one song, but wasn’t ACR brought in to stop that from happening!

M

Marksey

1

I know exactly what you mean, however it was inevitable streaming was going to take over once the internet became established and everyone started consuming their music online. But as long as the same old songs by the same old artists loiter in the charts for ages, what chance do less established artists and songs in a more niche genre have of charting!

avatar

strangeways_here_we_come

1

< faiyaz

Yeah I pretty much agree with you that's probably just my love for physical media, i think tik tok is more to blame because you're bound to get a hit for months if you get a viral song on there and the same songs will occupy the charts forever. Unfortunately the Internet has caused the death of the charts because as much as music feels like its open like you can listen to everything, people won't and it'll be the most generic and plain pop songs we've all heard before. There's genuine talent out there but I don't think I'll ever see a day again where the charts is generally good for me.

i went to tyler, the creator’s chromakopia tour this past tuesday, and it was the best concert ive been to so far!!

the two openers (paris texas and lil yachty) raised the roof too. i’m already a huge fan of paris texas so i was blown away by their set, and i knew yachty was gonna be good but i did not expect his set to blow me away like that.

then came tyler, who opened with a bang performing chromakopia songs before hitting the b-stage to do some of his greatest hits, along with a speech on how influential andre 3000 was (it was his birthday, and i agreed, he’s one of my top 5 rappers of all time). the crowd was crazy too! ifhy was shortened and they kept going before giving up (cue the “f*cking quitters” from tyler), they rowed for wusyaname, and turned into a choir for like him. and the pits for every artist’s set were insane.

yeah, this was worth the wait and worth the money. i loved every minute of it

‘Bloodline’ is probably the “best” of the three Alex Warren songs in the chart right now, although that isn’t exactly saying much.

‘Can’t Decide’ has a solid groove although it’s very basic outside of that, especially the drop. As for ‘Cliché’… I think MGK is just confused at this point.

Overall, another fairly disappointing week. Oh well, at least ‘Running Around’ is gone and New Music Friday was very promising today. Hoping the new singles from Miley Cyrus, Tate McRae, Addison Rae and Jax Jones show up next week.

loved the new addison rae song. in an ideal world she'd be having the same chart success as her new artist peers but people just want absolutely soulless guitar music instead of fun experimental pop right now. i also find it funny that she causes such outrage online for being an influencer who makes music, when alex warren has the exact same trajectory as her and is looking at having the biggest song of the year

avatar

itsnoodleszn_

2

faiyaz she did have one hit, diet pepsi, but yeah she deserves a lot more especially when you consider alex warren was in the hype house when she was too. get renee rapp up there too, id rather have fun interesting pop than the mumford-lumineers-stomp-clap-hey sh*te that’s had a resurgence as of late

avatar

faiyaz

1

yep totally agree. diet pepsi was a great hit tbf but i can't help but think the public perception of her is holding her back numbers-wise which didn't affect alex even though they had the same trajectory. although things could be looking up if her album gets a lot of attention when it drops on friday. renee is great as well, i've been thinking she's been getting snubbed of hits for years now!

My goodness. What happened to Myles Smith’s vocals on his new single? It sounds like an Imagine Dragons throwaway. Probably the worst song he’s charted with to date.

Does anyone else feel like the charts have been in serious decline throughout the past few months?

It’s a shame because 2025 started off so promising with Lola, Kendrick and Chappell getting their first #1 hits. Now we’re in a situation where the highest debuts are generally underwhelming, while most of the good new music is either charting low or not charting at all.

Not only that, but when you look at the lower half of these lists, it’s nearly turning into a throwback segment even though a lot of the older songs on ACR. They aren’t necessarily bad but they’re clogging up the charts at this point.

It's worse at billboard. The 2025 year end may be the most stagnant and depressing to date.

Oh yeah, we're definitely still in a better position than the Billboard charts.

I remember everyone thinking Lose Control would be out of the top ten in October 2024 when it was at 10.

Also, excluding Morgan Wallen, lose Control would be at 5, and it would've been at 4 the week before.

I love the song but just.. cmon.
