Synopsis: Seven essays, most of which were originally oral lectures or addresses. Only one ("A Secret Vice") directly addresses Tolkien's own fictional creations, but several throw light on his thinking on literary art in general. The title essay is one of his most famous works among professional colleagues, and "On Fairy Stories" is perhaps his best known essay among non-technical readers.
