  • Note: The full extent of the run of this magazine was from 1865-1901. The original Argosy was founded and published by Alexander Strahan in 1865. "In 1866 the reputation of the recently-established Argosy magazine was damaged by the serialisation of Charles Reade's sexually frank tale of bigamy - Griffith Gaunt. The strait-laced publisher, Alexander Strahan, was horrified by the backlash and sold the magazine in October 1867 to [Ellen] Wood. In December 1867 the first chapters of Wood's new novel, Anne Hereford, began to appear. From this time onwards Wood serialised almost all of her new novels in the Argosy, usually from the January until the following December. The three-volume book publication normally followed in the late autumn of the same year." (from mrshenrywood.co.uk). Ellen Wood (a.k.a. Mrs. Henry Wood), continued as the owner and editor for The Argosy until her death in Feb. 1887. Her son Charles Wood then took over these roles for the remainder of its run. Since Ellen Wood is known to us for many genre short stories, several of which were first published in this magazine, we list her as the editor for the appropriate issues. The other two editors have no other genre work, and hence are listed only as the generic "Editors of The Argosy (UK)".
