Let's cut to the chase, this movie has a childish storyline. At the same time there is a nice cinematography. There it is, movie summarized. Same story as with Drive, in which it was a bit less obvious. I watched Drive with my girlfriend, at a certain point she bursted out laughing and said "This can not be taken seriously, this is just a B movie", and I just realized she was completely right. There are a couple of laws in movies: when a zillion shots are fired, it's a tell tale of a bad movie. When there is cintinuously shouting (you know "JACK! GRAB THAT ROPE!") you know up front it's a bad movie. This movie, and it's the same with the original Drive, is a stylish but shallow spectacle that will thrill children up till the age of 14.
As a cinephile that watches anything that is watchable I liked this movie. The casting is great and the acting of the main three characters is entirely believable, with Zendaya being the star here: I say brilliant acting. This movie is about love and competition and jealousy and obsessions and the love of competition. The three characters interacting have traits of a theater play and I mean this as a compliment. All main characters have serious problems: one is a control freak, another let's himself be controlled beyond reason, and another is a loser with no moral and discipline. But they all love to play the game of of love and tennis and cheat and obsesssion.
This movie is intelligent science fiction and at the same time intensely dramatic. As a movie addict I have accepted the fact that about 0.1%, and I am not kidding, of movies are actually watchable. So what about this one? This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I have given it 10 stars for plot, acting, drama and for a low budget movie even the special effects are completely believable. Why are there not more movies like this? Too much shooting and shouting around. Quality movies like these have no shooting and shouting, none of that. But boy was I on the edge of my seat for the whole movie. Top notch science fiction!
