Run-of-the Mill Tribute to a Falstaffian Comic Figure

Mel Smith died in mid-2013 aged only 60. After a glittering career with such highs as NOT THE NINE O'CLOCK NEWS and ALAS SMITH AND JONES, he had receded into the background, appearing only in cameo roles such as the club manager in Steven Poliakoff's DANCING ON THE EDGE (2013).

This tribute interviews many of his old friends and colleagues including Griff Rhys Jones, John Lloyd, and others associated with the mid-Eighties revival in "satirical" comedy. Most of their comments were familiar enough; what made the documentary watchable were the clips from some of his best shows.

Smith was never an actor per se; he always appeared as himself in various forms. Not that he wasn't an extremely funny man; but he was more to be remembered as a comedian who acted rather than a comic actor.
