Early in the film Cal's character is driving home from his counselor's office reflecting on his dead fiancé' who died in a shooting at the mall. As Cal is driving there is a long tracking shot of a shopping mall as he passes it by, presumably the mall where his fiancé was shot. The mall seen is Clackamas Town Center just south of Portland, Oregon where an actual shooting took place on December 12, 2012. This shooting served as the main inspiration for the back story of this film.
