    Screw You, Doctor!

Space Captain is completely ridiculous and totally tongue-in-cheek, a tribute to the old black-and-white sci-fi films of the 1950s. I expected Space Captain to be generally silly, as films of this type usually are, but, surprisingly, it managed to achieve the right balance of elements to be actually funny.

There were one or two group of folks (whose names escape me now) who did a whole series of black-and-white parody films in the same style that Space Captain follows. The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra was one -- basically if you like that kind of silliness, you'll probably like Space Captain.

    Great Spoof of Flash Gordan

It is amazing what you can doe with little money and great music.

Why is this movie not more widely known?

Most of the cheap parody movies are disappointing. This one was NOT. I was going to give it an 8 but even the very end was a gag so that made it a nine. There were so many great little things that make this movie excel.

I would give this an 11 but the dial doesn't go that high.

This movie popped out at me on Amazon Prime. The title elicited a chuckle and the rolling narration, starting with Chapter 3 a la Star Wars, got me laughing. The movie hilariously parodies all of the characters of the Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s. Each time I thought I could stop laughing and catch my breath, something else started my up again. Spaceships that look like they were made out of Tinker Toys. Characters talking like Harvey Korman. Scientific holes that you can drive a truck through. Two scientists back on Earth named Dr Middleton and Dr Crabbe. I wonder if anybody else caught that. In the Flash Gordon serials Charles Middleton portrayed Emperor Ming, the Merciless, of the Planet Mongol and, of course, Buster Crabbe was Flash Gordon.

If you're a fan of Plan 9 From Outer Space and the like, you're gonna love this one.

    Lightweight but great fun

After five or ten minutes, I kind of thought I got the joke and wondered if they could sustain my interest for an hour and a half. But they did! It reminded me a lot of the old Low Moan company that did Footlight Frenzy and Bullshot Crummond. Cheesy effects that nevertheless look better than anything in the old serials, two-dimensional characters who nevertheless manage to engage my sympathy -- even the villains, and a stirring soundtrack by Holst that manages to be only just _slightly_ over the top. Currently available on Amazon Prime (which you probably know because why else would you be looking for a review?).
