Tom Segura: Teacher

Maybe it's just the sheer volume of content comedians are expected to churn out now, but you'd think between the podcasts and life experiences there'd be more sharp material in the mix. Instead, this feels like someone who's lost a bit of perspective on what's actually funny. At some point, comedians might need a self imposed "sell by" date that forces them to step away, reinvent what they do, and come back after a few years with enough distance to make fun of themselves in a fresher, more honest way.themselves a little better.

..this one sucked! With the weight, the humor seems to have been lost too... what a shame!

It was clear very early on in the special that this time it would be different, but we still hoped it would be better-unfortunately in vain!

I am happy to wait and see how things develop and hope for amusing times in the future.

Big Segura fan here. Regular watcher of YMH and 2 Bears 1 Cave. And I was looking forward to this special. And wanted it sooooo much to be hilarious! But unfortunately, no... I caught myself laughing out loud only once during the entire special. His typical Segura-style way of storytelling "...and if not, let me explain it to you, right now." felt really forced and like a gimmick. The topics seemed far-fetched or forced. It feels (not saying it IS) like he 'had to do one more Netflix special' but his head was somewhere else entirely.

6 is accurate and most everyone feels the same way I feel about it. I've watched it twice and bookended it with both Ball Hog and Sledgehammer, this special just doesn't have the same charm. Segura's usually quick on the draw even when he's laughing at his own jokes, but in Teacher sometimes he's the only one laughing. And it's nervous laughter. The first half is his typical quick banter and well timed jokes with buildup punchlines on the usual bodily functions and social commentary, sometimes repeating a theme later in the show. And the hilarity of his sons makes a return. The second half he clearly looses the crowd. The jokes aren't as rapid fired, his exaggerations aren't as comical, the cutting edge satire was not as much satirical as it was complainhitive and melancholy. (The good news is there's no "in-jokes", so Garth Brookes and Louisiana are safe.)

If I had to guess, his new series is eating up a lot of time and he still had an obligation for another special on Netflix. Got the same vibe from Ali Wong's recent Netflix special for similar timing constraints, albeit different reasons. Teacher is still a fun watch, but if you think it has the same level of comedy and as Sledgehammer, rewatch that show instead.

This was dreadful. Seems like he put very little effort into this one. Usually he has a decent few stories to tell, but the ones he did here were very dull. Seemed like canned laughter too. Audience were motionless on the odd occasion the camera panned to them and I can hardly blame them. He's mostly just talking without being funny. Disappointing. Don't think I laughed once.
