2015 was a solid year for Oz Perkins when he had two films premiering at the Toronto Film Festival. One was his directorial debut, The Blackcoat's Daughter, which would later receive the status of a cult slow-burn horror. The other was called The Girl in the Photographs and was directed by Nick Simon. Perkins, Simon, and Robert Morast collaborated on the screenplay and Wes Craven was attached as an executive producer. At the time, this horror film went largely unnoticed. Now with Perkins' two most recent movies, Longlegs and The Monkey, generating a lot of buzz, it seems like a great time to revisit the film. The Girl in the Photographsfeatures some unique killing scenes (it's not every day we see someone get murdered with a towel), a gloomy atmosphere, surprising amount of dark humor, and a few interesting things to say about the nature of visual arts.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins has been working with Nicolas Cage on a new horror project called Longlegs, and now he has just set up the horror project he’ll be moving on to when Longlegs is all wrapped up: an adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Monkey! Theo James of The White Lotus has already signed on to star in the film, which is being produced by genre regular James Wan.
Perkins will be directing The Monkey from his own screenplay. The film will tell the following story: When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years.

What did you do during the pandemic? If you’re a filmmaker with horror tendencies, you made a lo-fi horror film, it seems. That’s what Ben Wheatley did with “In The Earth,” same with filmmaking duo Nick Simon and writer/actor Luke Baine (“The Girl in the Photographs“), and it’s also what “District 9” and “Chappie” director Neill Blomkamp did too with his “free time.” The result is “Demonic,” a horror-thriller about unleashing demons and supernatural forces between family members.

As the pandemic lockdown changes the landscape of film and TV, many are shifting the way they tell stories — and a lot of that is shooting remotely. Filmmaker Nick Simon has done exactly that with the film Untitled Horror Movie which recently completed principal photography.
Directed by Simon, who co-wrote it with Luke Baines, the comedy-horror was shot entirely during lockdown with the entire writing, pre-production, and filming process taking place remotely. Set on computer screens and found footage style content, the movie follows six actors who decide to shoot their own horror movie as their hit TV show is on the brink of cancellation. In their search for a plot, they unintentionally summon a spirit with an affinity for violence, who starts picking them off one by one.
Baines also stars alongside Claire Holt, Darren Barnet, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Katherine McNamara and Timothy Granaderos (13 Reasons Why). The cast also features Kal Penn, Kevin Daniels, and Sohm Kapila.
“I’ve always believed that film should be a collaborative art form, and I don’t think there’s a truer example than with this picture,” said Simon, who was mentored by Wes Craven. “The actors did everything from lighting themselves — guided by our incredible Dp, Kevin Duggin — to recording their own sound and doing their own hair and makeup. As crazy as that could have been, it was easily one of the most enjoyable experiences in my professional life. It was one of those once in a lifetime moments when everything aligns at the exact right time.”
The film comes from Sundance and SXSW Grand Jury Award-winning producer Bronwyn Cornelius and Marina Stabile. Randy Sinquefield’s Spectrum Studios financed the picture. CAA Media Finance represents the film’s worldwide distribution rights.

Crawl helmer and horror genre star Alexandre Aja has just lined up his next project for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners, and it's oddly enough going to be an Interactive Haunted House Movie. This means that it will be an interactive horror movie with a branched narrative, reminiscent of those choose-your-own-adventure novels. Based on an idea by Howard and Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), the screenplay is written by Aja, Jeff Howard (The Haunting of Hill House), and Nick Simon (The Girl in the Photographs). Chady Eli Mattar and Scott C. Silver of Kino Industries are producing, with Aja executive producing along with partner Greg Levasseur and Kino's Tobias Webber. Jeb Brody and John Buderwitz are overseeing on behalf of Amblin.
So, here's how this interactive horror movie is apparently going to work. Using an app filmgoers can download on their cell phones and similar devices, people in each theater and...

After bringing alligators to the big screen in Crawl, Alexandre Aja will next direct a new haunted house movie that will incorporate its audience into its storytelling.
According to Collider, Aja will helm an untitled haunted house movie for Amblin Partners, based on an idea by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, the latter of whom will also write the script along with Nick Simon (The Girl in the Photographs) and Aja.
Collider describes the film as a "choose-your-own-adventure-style horror movie" in which audience members will vote on the decisions they'd like characters to make using an app on their phone, resulting in multiple endings and narratives for viewers to experience. Amblin is teaming up with Kino Industries’ CtrlMovie technology to create the new haunted house movie.

Luke Baines has been cast in the recurring role of Jonathan Morgenstern, the main villain in the remaining episodes of the third and final season of Freeform’s fantasy drama series Shadowhunters.
Previously hiding behind the identify of Sebastian Verlac, played by Will Tudor, Baines’ character was reborn at the end of the spring finale and is the true form of Clary’s (Katherine McNamara) brother. Jonathan’s return will present Clary and the Shadowhunters with a new level of evil that they can’t even imagine.
It was a lingering question following the spring finale as to who would play the character. Executive producers had discussed in previous interviews that Tudor would not be playing Jonathan.
Based on the Mortal Instruments novels, the fantasy drama will end its run in 2019 with a 12-episode season. The current third season is based on the fourth and fifth books in the series.
