Went from incisive to butter knife.

The Colbert Report was brilliant so I was looking forward to seeing what came next for Colbert but the late show is really losing me.

It must be intense having to make a show every day and be consistently good but there is increasingly too much indignant griping with predictable jokes (esp when it comes to Trump).

I do appreciate that Colbert brings on guests from the political world and does not mindlessly pander to celebrities but the meanwhile segment needs help. It is too in love with its own long 'witty' intros which sound like a creative writing exercise for undergrads and the jokes that follow are often obvious. I miss the convictions behind the quick wit and sharp humour of the Colbert Report and that correspondents dinner speech! (full disclosure: not American so maybe the show is group therapy for people reeling from the hard knocks on democracy and economic inequality and the ever-closing gap between satire).

A Grinning, Prancing Shell of the Relevant Stephen.

Colbert's Late Show is a major disappointment. The review written by DVD says it all for me. He's a grinning, prancing shell now. Was he bought out of his hilarious, cutting-edge, truth-seeking "Report?" Is he paid now to deliver vapid lines that don't expose political lies and hypocrisy? I miss you, too, bold, relevant Stephen. I counted on you to shine a light on important truths. I couldn't wait to laugh so hard I cried when you exposed fools with self-serving policies. How often I thanked God, and yes, I am a Christian, that you and Jon Stewart were delivering important news with humor that connected with our brains. I can no longer watch the "real" you, sitting beneath your massive ego dome, proud and smiling. About what?

The man is back, now being his real self!

From being a player on ABC's short-lived variety show The Dana Carvey Show to being a correspondent on The Daily Show for 8 years and hosting his own show for 9 years playing a fictionalized character, Stephen Colbert has conquered a lot of challenges, and in 2015, he would do his biggest challenge yet: to host CBS's The Late Show as a successor to David Letterman.

When Letterman retired on May 20th, CBS went all out with promoting the show and reworking the famous Ed Sullivan Theater where Letterman has hosted in from his entire tenure (apart from his on-location shows outside of New York).

It was the beginning of a new era of The Late Show.

It may have taken him a while to find his footing as he was being himself for the first time after playing a character for 9 years, but the execution was there, and he was smooth sailing by the following years. My grandmother had never heard of him until I showed her the Comedy Central Christmas special and now, she watches him every weeknight on this show!

So, if you're a fan of Mr. Colbert and only known him as his Report character, see him in action as himself.

    You won't regret it!

    I Miss You, Stephen

I've never had a poster of anyone on my wall. I went to a couple concerts in high school, like U2 and the Ramones, and had a shirt or two, but never wore them. I've always viewed that kind of celebrity worship as being kind of infantile. So when I do fall head over heels in love with a celebrity, it's kind of a big deal. And there's no celebrity, past or present, that I cherished as much as I cherished you.

There's a guy on a late night talk show that looks like you, sounds like you and even has your name, but this doppelganger doesn't have your soul. This grinning, unconfrontational Stepford Wife is a hollow shell of you. You were punk rock, this guy's Disneyland. You changed the world. He sells some hummus.

It's unbelievably difficult to imagine a life without you. I know that nothing lasts forever, so our time together was always going to come to an end, but it was a day I never wanted to see- and a day that came far too soon.

I love you, I miss you.

    Good snippets on YouTube.

I watch the 5-10 mins of monologues that get posted to YouTube regularly and love many of them. Always looking forward to the next one. Stephen is brill. I don't engage with the rest of the show - the music and interviews. Good stuff

    • Trivia
The Ed Sullivan Theater (where the show is taped) underwent an extensive renovation during the time between David Letterman's retirement and Stephen Colbert's debut as host of the Late Show. In addition to the talk show set receiving an overhaul, several architectural features of the theater were restored. The theater's ornate domed ceiling, which had been hidden behind air ducts and sound buffers, was uncovered, and the ornate stained-glass windows, which had been removed and placed in storage during the Letterman era, were re-installed.

Stephen Colbert: [at the Republican National Convention podium] Welcome, citizens, to the 2016 Hungry for Power Games! Ha ha, beautiful! This week, in this arena, the Republicans shall prove they are truly passionate about one candidate: Hillary Clinton. They will do anything to stop her, up to and including nominating Donald J. Jonah Jameson Trump. But Tribute Trump will not enter the arena alone, no. He has formed an alliance with Indiana governor Mike Pence.

      [falls asleep]

Stephen Colbert: Sorry, I blacked out there for a moment. So it is my honor to hereby launch and begin the 2016 Republican National Hungry for Power Games!

[bangs gavel; security begins to escort him away]

Stephen Colbert: Look, I know I'm not supposed to be up here, but let's be honest: neither is Donald Trump.
