I joked with my friend often not to waste money on "another Vietnamese movie" but this is just isn't it. If you really sit down at the cinema laid your back against the chair, hands touching cheek. You will see that kind of Kodak color is like a part of every Saigonese childhood. It is just a artful blend of space composition and an rich investment on scripting and character building. A slow but transforming flow of story telling.
At the end of the movie you will feel something stuck in your throat and something stuck in your eyes, but you know you can't get it out and wish it has all been done just one more time.
Please get your ass to the cinema right now before it no longer get to be there, TIMELESS.

This might be better titled 'Postcards of Vietnam' because that's what it feels like - a slide show of shots from Vietnam Tourism. It's attractive, but captures little of the reality of Vietnam. It's quiet, slow, meditative, and despite the occasional reference to the contrary, clean. This is a gentle film, much like the characters themselves. It's all about what's not said. Events and relationships bubble away beneath the surface, but very little actually happens, and although clearly aiming for emotional heft, it's hard to feel anything for the characters since they're all so one-dimensional and generally lacking in motivation. Depth is sought merely by referencing Camus, but never truly shown. This ultimately makes it feel vacuous, but then that is kind of the point of existentialism. For all its flaws, it is nevertheless well made, and worth a watch as long as you don't expect any actual action or sincere emotion.
Romance done right with prejudice. History done right with nuances. Cultural research done with informed comparison. Everything in the film is accurate and sincere, neither over-emphasized or undermined by any mystic takes on the subject matters. Vietnamese films have not had their global limelight moment for a while; this will be IT for this decade.
Those who contrive to compare this to In The Mood For Love, you cannot be more right and cannot be more wrong at the same time. If you even try to use Hong Kong as a measuring stick for Saigon, you have already lost the plot and its history.
