A Flawed Yet Engaging Watch - Elevated by Performances

Let me start by saying: this series isn't nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. While it may not be a flawless production, it delivers a genuinely engaging storyline that held my attention throughout. The narrative had depth, emotional layers, and a certain realism that made it resonate beyond surface-level entertainment.

Anirban Bhattacharya once again proves why he's one of the most compelling actors in Bengali cinema today. His performance is nuanced, intense, and completely immersive. He brings a magnetic screen presence that elevates even the more uneven scenes. Parno Mittra also deserves applause - she was absolutely spot-on in her role, delivering a performance that felt authentic and grounded.

Now, when it comes to the direction and technical aspects, I'll admit the film has its shortcomings. The pacing could have been tighter, and some scenes felt slightly undercooked. It's not Parambrata Chattopadhyay's strongest work as a filmmaker - but, to be fair, it's definitely a step up from some of his earlier horror productions. There's promise in his storytelling instincts, even if the execution sometimes lacks polish.

In the end, this is a series with heart. It may not be perfect, but it doesn't pretend to be. It tries to tell a meaningful story and, in many ways, succeeds - especially thanks to the strength of its cast.

Would I recommend it? Yes - especially for fans of Anirban or anyone who appreciates thoughtful storytelling with a human touch. Just go in with tempered expectations, and you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

    Disappointing!

Having read and heard the story multiple times, I was cautiously excited when a live action adaptation was announced. Having seen the series, I regret having spent my time. Cheap jump-scares, uninspiring sequences, amateur lighting , visibly poor dubbing, wasted opportunities for creative liberties and the lack of memorable performances ( even Anirban Bhattacharya and Rajatava Dutta's fine performances couldn't save the day) spoiled it for me. Horror is more about ambience, sound, unspoken and unseen elements rather than jump-scares and overt dramatizations. Forget about horror, I never even had any fleeting sense of discomfort in the entirety of the 6 episodes. I wish Mr Parambrata Chatterjee had spent more time imbibing the true flavour that Mr Avik Sarkar had concocted in his literature.

    A Must Watch Web Series

The new Bengali Web Series Bhog has some distinctive qualities that make it unique. The Web Series released on May 01, 2025 narrates a story related to Paranormal activities. But it is unclear whether this can be called a horror Web Series as per the standard lexicon. Rather it's genre seems to be different one which includes some important aspects related to certain Schools of Devotion comprising both Hinduism and Buddhism of ancient India. In fact, different religious Schools eminent during the rules of Hindiu and Buddhist kings and emperors in India display unique sense of uniformity in certain aspects centuries back. The Tantra Sadhana (Black Magic) is one of them. But one understands the difference between Black Magic and the Divine. However, as the thin line often remains unnoticed, the Hindu and Buddhist rituals often seem alike. This is relevant in case of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Web Series Bhog narrates all these beautifully. Here the theme is straight forward. The action revoles around a strange idol and the paranormal activities which go on having both direct and indirect connection with the ritualistic aspects and the fallouts of Tantra Sadhana practised by an individual without proper knowledge. This goes on and keeps on inviting perils. The Web Series keeps hooked the attention.

The Casting of the Web Series is really great. Anirban Bhattacharya is great as always. Despite limited space, Rajatava Dutta makes his presence felt. Anyway, a highly recommend Web Series.

    A Masterpiece in Monotony

If you're looking for a series that will leave you questioning your life choices - specifically the one where you pressed 'play' - then Bhog is the cinematic experience you never asked for. This isn't just a series; it's a slow, meandering journey into the abyss of "Why was this even made?"

Let's start with the plot - or should I say, the masterclass in how to stretch 30 minutes of content over multiple hours. The storyline meanders like a lost tourist without GPS. Every episode leaves you on the edge of your seat... because you're constantly debating whether to leave or fast forward. The mystery elements are so subtle, they're practically invisible. Blink, and you'll miss nothing - because nothing actually happens.

The characters are nothing short of iconic. And by iconic, I mean they're about as dynamic as wallpaper. Each one brings a unique flavor to the screen - mostly bland, with a hint of confusion. The lead, in particular, deserves praise for consistently maintaining the same expression regardless of whether they're experiencing joy, trauma, or indigestion. That level of emotional restraint should be studied by scientists.

And oh, the dialogue! Pure poetry - if that poetry was written last minute by someone who forgot the assignment was due. Every conversation feels like it's trying to be deep, but ends up somewhere between vague and completely incomprehensible. There's a certain talent in saying so much and yet so little.

The pacing of Bhog deserves special mention. It's slow, yes - but not the usual suspenseful slow-burn. No, this is the kind of slow that makes you check if your internet is lagging. You'll find yourself staring at scenes that go on forever, waiting for something - anything - to happen. Spoiler: it doesn't.

Now, let's talk visuals. The cinematography is... there. The series certainly has lighting, and sometimes even a camera angle that's interesting. But most of the time, you get dimly lit scenes where characters whisper cryptically while you fumble for the brightness button and wonder if your screen is broken. It's not. That's just Bhog's aesthetic.

Sound design? Impressive. Every dramatic moment is accompanied by suspenseful music that works harder than the actors. You'll hear more emotion in the background score than in the entire cast's performances combined. If only the plot could match the music's energy, we'd have a winner.

And then comes the ending - the grand finale we all slogged through for. Without spoiling anything, let me just say this: it ends. Whether you feel satisfied, confused, or simply relieved that it's over, depends entirely on how much of your soul Bhog drained during its runtime.

To be fair, Bhog does achieve something few series manage: it brings people together. Not out of admiration, but out of shared disappointment. Watching Bhog is like being part of a secret club - one where everyone feels tricked but no one wants to admit they finished it out of sheer stubbornness.

In conclusion, Bhog is a brilliant example of how not to make a thriller. It's a surreal blend of high ambition and low execution. If boredom had a fan club, this series would be president. Watch it if you're a fan of drawn-out scenes, mysterious (but not in a good way) storytelling, and characters who redefine the word "forgettable."

For everyone else - save yourself. Watch paint dry. At least that has a plot arc.

Goosebumps for most of the time

I really liked the series apart from the ending. Some things were not linked right. However, I will give full marks to the settings and the scares generated.

Watch at night with less distractions. You will be scared surely.

The acting of the lead actor is good and exceeds expectations. The supporting cast also does it's job well.

As I said before some questions were not answered properly and that is my only gripe with the show. The back story had holes. I cannot say more as it would then give away spoilers.

A great effort for a Bengali show and my recommendation would be to go ahead and definitely watch it.
