Episode 1

The Irish gangster drama Kin had an easy set up.

Two rival drug families at war in Dublin. One of the gangs is the big fish. The other has a leading member who vows to go straight for his daughter. Only circumstances pull him back in.

The makers of This City is Ours have namechecked The Sopranos as an inspiration.

Ronnie Phelan (Sean Bean) is a veteran gangster originally from Sheffield but has been living in Liverpool for years. A shipment of drugs has gone awry and they suspect an insider is a traitor.

His son Jamie (Jack McMullen) might not be ready to take over Ronnie's empire. Michael (James Nelson-Joyce) the gang's fixer and Ronnie's right hand man could be. Michael is prepared to get his hands dirty.

The opener of This City is Ours follows the gangsters personal and professional lives. It is one where religion is important as well as golf.

I did not get blown away by the first episode. It all felt perfunctory to me. The characters were underwritten and hard to care for.
