a blatant attack on basic human rights

This show is a disgrace to storytelling and a blatant attack on basic human rights. By portraying an untried individual as a criminal, it recklessly disregards the foundation of any fair justice system-the presumption of innocence. It exploits public curiosity and sensationalism, turning a real person's life into a spectacle for profit, without accountability or care for the consequences. This is not just bad writing; it's dangerous media. It encourages viewers to pass judgment based on fiction rather than fact, further damaging the life of someone who hasn't even had the chance to defend themselves in court. Reducing someone's suffering to a plotline may get ratings, but it's ethically bankrupt and morally corrupt. This is not entertainment-it's character assassination masked as drama.

    Possibilities...

I hear all of your reviews re: Justice for LM. Do you think it's possible that this was written long before the incident that you're all alluding to & that this is a coincidence? So much has to be in place before story lines are taped. It's quite possible that this was already done filming before the incident occurred. I honestly do not know the timeline of writing, production, filming, etc. Because I'm not a professional in the industry of producing a series drama, and, if I am wrong on the timing, that's on me. I'm just not quite sure how so many of you apparently used to be fans of the show & suddenly when there's a coincidence, no research into timelines for production. Not here to argue; I'm just saying that it's possible...

Could this episode effect the real -life case?

This series has a lot of stories "Ripped from the Headlines" It is pretty much what the series is known for. Difference is that previously they wait until AFTER the case is concluded. This case comes directly from the killing of a health insurance company CEO only 5 moths ago.

The concern here is that this episode could influence the jury in the real case.

The episode showed the widespread support for the killer. Right now most people think that the killing was wrong but a lot of people were applauding the action.

Almost like the Joker movie for real (the original not the sequel)

The thing that should concern is not the action of the killer but rather the fact that large numbers of people sympathize with the killer and regard the CEO guy as a low-life.

    Despicable

To say this episode is cheesy is an understatement. Not only cheesy, it is done in poor tatee and even with malice to quite literally everyone involved as well as the entire planet. This episode is absolutely harmful to the innocent man being framed. It is deplorable to release something like this for the younger family members of the individual who supposedly was unalived. It is disrespectful to the United States Constitution and all it stands for. Most importantly it is disrespectful to the American Democracy and the judicial due process. This episode should never have happened, but if it was to be created, this episode should have been created in 4 to 5 years from now maybe even longer than that. Shame on everyone involved including the actors; none of you had to participate in any of this, you chose to.

    Propaganda nonsense.

This is the worst sort of idiocy which is a hallmark of Wolf Dick's shows. It is beyond insulting. Anyone but a hardcore leftist idiot would see deeply offended by this offal. And the ending is beyond insulting. No verdict so that Wolf can avoid showing a New York City jury to be as stupid as he is. The fact is when Mangione comes to trial, even the people of New York will convict him in a second.

The rebirth of L&O has been good in a few ways, but episodes like this one make the show seem idiotic. Even a little balance in the story would have made this a compelling "torn from the headlines" episode. Instead it is an insulting pile of crap.

    • Trivia
Another "ripped from the headlines" episode based on the December 4, 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Thompson was standing outside of the New York Hilton Midtown when someone walked up and shot him three times with a handgun equipped with a suppressor, the murder was captured on security cameras. One of the spent shell casings had the words "delay, defend, deny" etched on it, a popular phrase used by insurance companies to describe efforts to deny claims. On December 9 the suspect in the shooting was identified as 26 year old Luigi Mangione, who was arrested in Pennsylvania, he was found in possession of a 3D printed pistol, a 3D printed suppressor, a fake New Jersey drivers license and a copy of a manifesto Mangione wrote criticizing the healthcare industry. His motive for targeting Thompson specifically is unknown, as Mangione was never a UnitedHealthcare client, although his case has served as a public call for the reform of the healthcare industry making Magnione become a kind of folk hero in some people's eyes; over $750,000 has been donated to his defense fund. A poll found that some people supported what Mangione did and believe he should be acquitted, while the majority of people questioned said that while they don't condone what Magione did and felt he should be punished, they also understood his reasons. Mangione is facing both state & federal charges that would result in either life imprisonment or death if convicted.

Mangione is facing 11 state charges in New York County Supreme Court: one count of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree (class D felony), one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree (class A misdemeanor), four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (class D felony), two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (class C felony), one count of murder in the second degree (class A-I felony), one count of committing a crime of terrorism (class A-I felony), and one count of murder in the first degree (class A-I felony); if convicted he would face a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. He also faces four federal charges in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York: two counts of stalking (class D felony), one count of criminal use of a firearm equipped with a silencer (class B felony), and murder through use of a firearm (class A felony). The stalking and firearms charges carry a minimum sentence of 40 years in prison, while the murder charge carries a minimum sentence of life in prison, or the death penalty.

ADA Maroun says they determined the bullets from the victim were fired from the defendant's gun with 100% accuracy. However no ballistics test is ever that accurate, and in real life it is far less accurate than depicted. When a bullet hits a hard target, like a person, it is often too deformed (especially if it hits bone or metal) to make a conclusive comparison. It is actually uncommon for a ballistics expert to say they can conclusively match a bullet to a specific gun, most of the time the best they can do is to conclusively say the bullet was fired from the same make, model and caliber as the gun in question.
