“The Talent,” a glitzy party-set psychological thriller toplining Ester Expósito, one of the biggest breakouts of “Elite” stars, will be brought onto the market at Berlin by Spain’s Film Factory Entertainment.

Handling many of Spain’s biggest non-global streamer movies, Film Factory has acquired worldwide rights to “The Talent”outside Spain. It will present at next month’s European Film Market a first promo of the movie whose talent package is compounded by Fernando León de Aranoa, who co-writes and produces. Helmer of San Sebastian Film Festival Golden Shell winner “Mondays in the Sun,” one of the early big breakthroughs for Javier Bardem, León directed Bardem once more in the Oscar shortlisted “The Good Boss,” which also won six 2021 Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars, including Best Film and Director, and the European Film Award for Best Comedy.

Prime Video’s November programming will dip its toe into Christmas and other holiday offerings such as The Holiday (2006) starring Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black. The streamer will also add some films with sequels arriving in theaters this month, like Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Ridley Scott’s 1992 film Gladiator.

Laura Fernández Espeso, who took over as CEO of The Mediapro Studio (Tms), in 2020, has taken the Iberian powerhouse global. The group now has 52 offices across 31 countries, and this summer launched operations across the U.S. and Canada. “We’ve opened offices in Los Angeles after operating in Miami and New York over the last few years,” she says, Tms US & Canada fulfills our goal to create, produce, and distribute content in English, intended for audiences all over the world.”

Tms’ English-language credits to date include the Paolo Sorrentino-directed limited series The Young Pope and The New Pope, for HBO/Max, and Nicolas Winding Refn’s family adventure series The Famous Five for the BBC, as well as such features as A Perfect Day, Hunting Ava Bravo, and Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths.

Indie film is where Fernández Espeso got her start in the industry, more than 20 years ago.

It has been four years since director Cary Fukunaga, who previously directed Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond in No Time to Die, was accused of multiple accounts of sexual misconduct. Fukunaga was accused of sexual misconduct, grooming, and crossing professional lines on set, which one would imagine would kill anyone's career. Yet that doesn't seem to have stopped him from lining up a new film with the two stars Sony Pictures has invested in to carry their Spider-Man-led franchise that doesn't feature the superhero.

Deadline has reported that Fukunaga has signed on to direct an adaptation of John Nesb crime thriller novel Blood on Snow, with Tom Hardy (Venom) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter) set to star. Nesb will pen the script based on his original novel, marking a rare turn for him to adapt one of his books. His work has previously been adapted...

Paramount has announced the lineup of movies, TV shows, and live sports coming to the Paramount+ streaming service in July. The Paramount Plus July 2024 schedule includes season two of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, the music documentary Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken, the espionage docuseries Mafia Spies, a 24/7 stream of Big Brother, and more.

It’s been 25 years since SpongeBob SquarePants first made a splash, and we all got swept away in his underwater hijinks. In July, brand-new adventures are in store for the seafaring superstar and the residents of Bikini Bottom when Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years returns for a second season.

Paramount+ is marking SpongeBob SquarePants’ silver anniversary in style with several unique activations. Erika Kennair is named head of scripted content and Pam Healey head of unscripted content reporting to The Mediapro Studio US/Canada head Juan Acosta.

The North American leadership team comprises Ari Tan as head of strategy and operations and Robert Haiat as head of commercial in Los Angeles, with Leslie Cohen as head of global acquisitions and Juan Pablo Santos as SVP content and business development, both based in New York.

The Mediapro Studio is opening a new US/Canada headquarters office in Los Angeles and has appointed Juan ‘Jc’ Acosta as its head of operations for the market.

Barcelona-based Grup Mediapro has promoted Laura Fernández Espeso to the post of general manager with oversight over not just The Mediapro Studio, where she currently serves as CEO, but the whole of the Group. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2025.

As Grup Mediapro’s No. 2, reporting to Mediapro co-founder Tatxo Benet, Group Media President and CEO, Fernández Espeso will oversee a company now streamlined in five business units, two new, focused on the Group’s principle revenue drivers.

Fernández Espeso replaces Juan Ruíz de Gauna who has had a stellar career occupying senior management positions from an early age at key companies re-shaping Spain’s modern media landscape as ongoing deregulation kicked in, at Antena 3 TV, Prisa’s Sogetel, Sogepaq and Idea, then Via Digital, Telefonica and from 2002 at Mediapro and its commercial broadcaster La Sexta.

The Mediapro Studio will shoot from November Season 3 of “The Head,” its biggest international hit, filming in the Sahara Desert with John Lynch (“The Fall”) and Katharine O’Donnelly (“Mary Queen of Scots), attached once more to star.

Olivia Morris also returns to her role as Rachel Russo, the morally conscionable daughter of ambition-crazed biologist Arthur Wilde, played by Lynch.

“The Head” Season 1 took place at an Antarctic research station cut off in winter, Season 2 on a hulking freighter at mid-Pacific’s Point Nemo, the most distant place on earth from nearest land.

“The locations for this series have been a fundamental part of the show itself, always in an inaccessible place,” Laura Fernández Espeso, The Mediapro Studio CEO, told Variety before talking at a Mipcom Media Mastermind Keynote on Tuesday.

The latest trailer for the HBO sci-fi epic Westworld has revealed the much-anticipated premiere date for the fourth season — and revealed an Oscar winner as a recurring guest star. Initially released as an easter egg for Westworld fans to uncover, the new teaser (watch below) was posted online Monday evening, revealing a Sunday, June 26, premiere. It also offers a quick glimpse of Ariana DeBose; no details have been given about her character. The clip, set to Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” begins calmly, with sweeping shots of a dystopian New York City as we check in with various characters from the series. Then things get a little crazy. A shot of a bloody Man In Black gives way to burning trees, violent shoot-outs, unsettling experiments, people waltzing in the streets, and swarms of flies. The fourth season is described as “a dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.

“Westworld” is adding a new face to its Season 4 cast — “West Side Story” star Ariana DeBose.

The actress, who picked up the Supporting Actress Oscar earlier this year, has joined the HBO show as a recurring guest star. No details were immediately available about her character.

She’ll join returning cast members Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul and Angela Sarafyan.

HBO has released the first teaser for the upcoming fourth season of “Westworld,” revealing footage of the next installment to the science-fiction series.

HBO planned the release of the trailer as an easter egg for fans to uncover. The teaser surfaced online to all on Monday evening.

Cryptically titled “It doesn’t look like anything to me,” the teaser unfolds to the rhythm of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” perhaps ironically hinting at a not-so-perfect ordeal for its cast of existentially challenged androids. The teaser offers glimpses at what characters played by Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul and Angela Sarafyan will be up to in the upcoming season.

The teaser features no dialogue, instead unfolding as a series of typically oblique, heady sci-fi images, depicting a dystopian version of New York City, smoke-emitting contraptions, people waltzing in the streets and flies.

The Miami Film Festival has announced its opening and closing titles for its upcoming 39th edition.

The festival, which showcases works from filmmaker’s in the Ibero-American diaspora, will premiere and end with two films listed on the Oscar shortlist for international feature film. “The Good Boss” (El Buen Patrón), a comedy written and directed by Spain’s Fernando León de Aranoa, will open the festival, which will close with “Plaza Catedral,” the sophomore narrative feature of Panamanian director Abner Benaim.

Emma Corrin isn’t the only actress who could reap awards this fall for playing Princess Diana. The first trailer for “Spencer” debuted on Thursday, showcasing Stewart’s transformation as Diana Spencer, the woman who would marry Prince Charles and become one of the most recognizable people on Earth in the 1980s and 1990s.

“I’ve always been intrigued and fascinated by the Royal Family and how things are in that culture, which we don’t have where I come from,” Larraín said to Deadline last year about the project. “Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life.

Visual artist Pascual Sisto’s feature debut “John and the Hole” hits theaters Aug. 6 after a long wait — the IFC release was a prestigious Cannes 2020 Label selection, and it also played at Sundance earlier this year. Sisto was also named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch in 2021. A cross between an unnerving fable and thriller, “John and the Hole” is written by Nicolás Giacobone, who adapted the screenplay from his short story “El Pozo.” Film stars Charlie Shotwell as a young teen who traps his family in an abandoned underground bunker and plays at being an adult. Film also stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Ehle and Taissa Farmiga. Sisto came to the U.S. from Spain to study filmmaking and is also an accomplished artist, having mounted exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. Sisto talked to Variety over the phone recently. The conversation has been edited for length.

Pascual Sisto’s “John and the Hole” — a psychological portrait of a disaffected teenager — has had a circuitous road to the screen. The movie, Sisto’s feature debut, was selected for last year’s Cannes Film Festival, which was, of course, canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, it premiered at the virtual Sundance Film Festival in January, after which it was bought by IFC Films.

At long last, IFC Films is releasing “John and the Hole” in theaters and on-demand on Aug. 6 — and today, dropped its first trailer.

In “John and the Hole,” John (Charlie Shotwell), is a 13-year-old seemingly without affect. He walks through his life of privilege as if in a trance — until one day, he discovers a bunker on the property of his family’s house. London-based production, finance and sales outfit Film Constellation has inked the key first deals on psychological thriller “John and the Hole,” directed by Pascual Sisto, on the back of the film’s virtual market premiere at Cannes. The film was written by Nicolás Giacobone, an Oscar-winner with “Birdman,” who adapted his short story “El Pozo.”

“John and the Hole” sold in the U.K./Ireland to Vertigo Releasing, in Australia and New Zealand to Rialto Distribution, and in South Korea to the Coup Corporation. As previously reported, IFC Midnight will release the film in the U.S. later this summer.

Following the film’s selection for the Cannes 2020 Label, and on the back of its Sundance 2021 competition selection, a physical market premiere will be staged for international buyers on Sunday in Cannes, with Sisto in attendance.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.

The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!

Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

IFC Films has nabbed North American rights to “John and the Hole,” an unorthodox coming-of-age story that had its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Directed by visual artist Pascual Sisto, the film follows 13-year-old John (Charlie Shotwell) who decides to drug his well-to-do parents (Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Ehle) and older sister (Taissa Farmiga). He then holds them captive within an unfinished bunker that he discovered while walking through the woods. Home alone, John experiences newfound freedom and independence.

IFC Films plans to release the film on August 6, 2021. The film marks Sisto’s feature debut. He was named one of Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch” in 2021. In a favorable review, Variety‘s Peter Debruge called Sisto a “remarkable new talent” and praised Shotwell’s performance.

Perhaps it’s because “Memory Box” is freely adapted from co-director Joana Hadjithomas’ teenage letters and diaries that this is the most affectingly Proustian of the filmmaker’s works made with Khalil Joreige. “Perhaps” because it would be wrong to treat this richly multi-layered exploration of memory and how it’s processed across generations as a standard fictionalized memoir. Well-known for how they organically incorporate experimental techniques into films tackling the traumas of Lebanese society since the Civil War, the duo here weave together what starts as an almost too-traditional mother-daughter struggle today with visualizations of life in Beirut during the early 1980s. MK2 Films has lured key European buyers with “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem. The film started shooting last month in Spain.

Described as an offbeat satire with darkly comedic elements, “The Good Boss” is being produced by Fernando León de Aranoa through the label Reposado P.C. and Mediapro Studio.

The major distributors that have boarded the movie include Bim in Italy, Alamode in Germany and Austria, Cascade in the Cis and Baltics, and Spentzos in Greece. MK2 launched sales on the movie during the Toronto Film Festival.

Discussions are underway in other territories, according to Fionnuela Jamison, head of international sales at MK2 Films.

For the traditional curtain call at the end of tonight’s episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, host John Mulaney came out wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the name Hal. It was a tribute to longtime SNL sketch music producer Hal Willner who died in April of complications related to Covid-19. He was 64.

Former SNL writer Mulaney was among a slew of former and current SNL-ers who were featured in a video segment honoring Willner, which aired on the show days after his death. Mulaney spoke of “wonderful friend” Willner in the video, in which everyone shared touching memories about Willner’s decades on the show. It also featured a music tribute to the song Perfect Day by frequent Willner collaborator Lou Reed as well as clips of Willner himself talking about his work.

Woody Allen’s latest film, “Rifkin’s Festival,” has a first trailer, which Variety can share exclusively.

Produced by Spain’s The Mediapro Studio, Allen’s own Gravier Productions and Italy’s Wildside, the comedy will world premiere at Spain’s 68th San Sebastian Film Festival, opening the event on Sept. 18.

Javier Bardem is set to return to his native Spain to star in new feature “The Good Boss,” reuniting with director Fernando León de Aranoa, The Mediapro Studio and many of the social themes of 2002’s “Mondays in the Sun,” a movie that sealed a young Bardem’s acting reputation.

France’s MK2 Films, the Paris-based production, sales and exhibition company, has acquired international sales rights to the film, described as an offbeat satire with darkly comedic elements.

Produced by Fernando León de Aranoa’s own label, Reposado P.C., and The Mediapro Studio, the film will begin shooting this October.

One of the major figures at this year’s Venice Film Festival, Academy Award-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino will serve as president of the main competition official jury at Spain’s 68th San Sebastian Festival.

The announcement comes as Guadagnino world premieres two films at Venice: the doc feature “Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams,” about extraordinary Italian luxury shoe designer-entrepreneur Salvatore Ferragamo, and a more personal 122-minute short “Fiori, Fiori, Fiori,” in which Guadagnino looks up childhood friends to see how they’re faring during Covid-19.

At San Sebastian, Guadagnino will also be on double duty as he will also present out of the competition the world premiere of his series “We Are What We Are,” an HBO/Sky Italia production sold by Fremantle.

Madrid — Producer of Academy Award nominated “7.35 in the Morning” and “One Two Many” and then signature features by Nacho Vigalondo, Borja Cobeaga and Koldo Serra, Basque cinema driving force Sayaka Producciones has boarded Alauda Ruíz de Azúa’s “Five Little Wolves” as a producer.

This weekend’s coronavirus quarantine episode of “Saturday Night Live” ended not with a sketch or a musical performance, but with a touching tribute to Hal Willner, the composer who produced music for the show’s sketches.

Willner, who died Tuesday from an illness that’s symptoms were consistent with Covid-19, had been with “SNL” since 1981 and served as the sketch music producer for nearly two decades. In the closing moments of the first-ever “Saturday Night Live From Home,” the show paid tribute to its longtime sketch-music maestro Hal Willner, who died on April 7 with symptoms consistent with coronavirus. Willner was renowned as a multi-talented producer of albums by Lou Reed, Marianne Faithfull, Lucinda Williams as well as elaborate multi-artist tribute compilations to Charles Mingus, Kurt Weil and others — but unquestionably his most widely-heard work was the music he helmed for the skits on “SNL” for nearly 40 years, beginning in 1981.

The segment features multiple castmembers from across the years — ranging from Adam Sandler and Tina Fey to Kate McKinnon and Fred Armisen — paying tribute to Willner.

Madrid-based production hub The Mediapro Studio has announced finalized details of an arrangement with Madrid’s Complutense University (Ucm) and the National Film and Television School of London (Nfts) on a new Master’s program designed to develop new screenwriting talent.

Mediapro general director Juan Ruiz de Gauna, Ucm dean of information sciences Jorge Clemente and Irene Ortega, who will fill the role of director for the new program, made the announcement at Madrid’s Matadero, an early 20th century slaughterhouse now converted into an arts center, where the course will be taught.
