Quan Xiao is a simple village girl, living on a remote island with the Old Man who rescued her from the sea some time ago and various other villagers; the Old Man screens movies for the people, but otherwise there is little in the way of modernity. Quan Xiao does not remember anything of her life before she was rescued three years earlier, but she dreams of going to the Big City, where she will live a life just like in the movies, so when she sneaks aboard a passing vessel she is on her way. Except the small ship runs into a huge one, and she is tossed overboard to drown in the sea. But there's a special magical medallion that had fallen into the sea some time before, a medallion that controls time, and it somehow both bonds and infuses her with itself. In the meantime, in the big city, Thirteen who had been tasked to find the medallion, did find it and then lost it, and is now on a mission to recover it. When the two of them meet, well, sparks will fly....
On the one hand, this is a really beautiful animated film, looking absolutely gorgeous in its renderings and details. On the other hand, this is a story about how time robs everyone of everything, eventually, and in the end, only love matters. If you walk out of a screening of this without tears, well, you're probably not human. Everyone dies, everything ends, and at the last, only love matters.
