Following the excellent “Melancholic”, Seiji Tanaka opted for a rather different perspective on killers of hire, this time adapting “Oni Goroshi”, a manga series by Masamichi Kawabe, in Netflix-style, violence-sensualizing ways. Let us see how he fares.

As the movie begins, we witness Sakata, aka the deadliest assassin in Shinjo City, cutting through a number of opponents with his rather bulky meat cleaver (knife if you prefer), before he goes back to his family (wife and daughter), after what was supposed to be his last job as a killer for hire. Expectedly, things do not go as planned, and a group of masked ruffians are waiting for him at home, eventually killing his family and leaving him with a gunshot to his head, which does not kill him, but puts him into a kind of a vegetative state. If that was not enough,...

Netflixcontinues to be a popular streaming platform for action movie fans, with their latest John Wick-esque revenge thriller now finding success and crashing into the top 10. Following the likes of such genre hits as Rebel Ridge, Carry-On, The Shadow Strays, and more, the streamer’s new action offering, the brutal and bloody Demon City, is gradually finding an audience since being released at the end of last month.
An adaptation of the manga "Oni Goroshi" by Masamichi Kawabe, Demon City merges violent revenge action with the supernatural in this tale of a highly skilled hitman who resurrects his deadly skills and cuts a bloody path of vengeance after his wife and daughter are (seemingly) killed. While it does sound a lot like a thousand revenge stories before it, sometimes, a no-nonsense action thriller about a former assassin on the warpath is exactly what you need. Clearly, audiences agree.

After major action movie successes Rebel Ridge, The Shadow Strays, and more, Netflix presents Demon City, a John Wick-esque revenge thriller and adaptation of the manga "Oni Goroshi" by Masamichi Kawabe, which tells the violent and visceral tale of a legendary hitman who, after his wife and daughter are killed, resurrects his particular set of skills on a bloody path of vengeance. The first reactions to Demon City, which offers gritty action with a supernatural twist, are now in. So, does Demon City continue the streamer’s action movie hot streak? Or this action thriller a disappointing imitation of Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving hitman?
Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies found it to be very much the former, awarding Demon City a near-perfect score of 4/5 and praising the action on display.

The lone warrior archetype is a recurrent figure in Japanese mythology and folklore— broken, violent persons spending their life in darkness, trying to turn a new page and redeem themselves, only to have fate plunge them into the same dark depths—it makes for an intriguing setup. Through the years, numerous literary and media formats have experimented with this setup with different combinations of visual and narrative style, and in that regard, Seiji Tanaka’s Japanese action thriller, Demon City, which follows the said form, has nothing exceptional to offer. You can identify the inspirations taken from classic Japanese revenge sagas and the John Wick series of movies—but the depth you’d expect from such a narrative treatment is strangely missing—which turns the movie itself into a brilliantly choreographed action sequence montage. The movie definitely had the potential to be a much more stylish, gritty, pulp-noir spectacle—which...

Have you ever watched a “John Wick” movie and thought to yourself, “I wonder if this would be even better if it were a little more lurid, a hell of a lot dumber, and its soundtrack had roughly 9,000 times as much flash-microwaved cheese rock?” Let’s just assume you have. Well, good news! Netflix — whose original content often feels like a response to a rhetorical question no human being has ever thought to ask — has you covered and then some with “Demon City,” a fun Japanese action film that adds exactly nothing to the “retired hitman seeks revenge” sub-genre and has a decent time doing it.

Ever since the release of John Wick, every story about an individual with a violent past resuming their old ways in order to do some good has been labeled as a rip-off of the Keanu Reeves-led action film. But the fact of the matter is that this particular plotline is as old as movies themselves. Akira Kurosawa used this trope in Seven Samurai all the way back in 1954. Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name is a recognizable figure in this action subgenre, and that character began his journey on the silver screen in 1964. In the ‘90s, we got The Long Kiss Goodnight. David Cronenberg gave us his own take on this kind of story with A History of Violence in 2005. If you dip your toes into Tamil and Telugu films and their Bollywood remakes, almost every project with an aging star has that same old narrative. I don...

Directed by Seiji Tanaka, Demon City is just a bunch of high-octane, adrenaline-pumping, blood-soaked action sequences put together. I don’t deny that the premise of a man wanting to take revenge on a local Yakuza group for the murder of his family had potential, but there is absolutely no depth in the narrative. There is a man who is capable of doing things that defy logic and science, and he just walks into the Yakuza den and kills them all. We never get to know what kind of people inhabit the world, what their motivations are, what their belief systems are, and what they want to achieve in their lives. Also, I couldn’t help but observe how much the writers were inspired by John Wick; only if they understood that having a kind of a similar backstory and making the protagonist drive an old car is not enough.

Demon City’s ending was all about Sakata getting his revenge on the Kimen-gumi for killing his wife, Aoi, and supposedly murdering his daughter, Ryo. Back in the day, Sakata used to work as a hitman for Fujita. As his last assignment before seeking retirement and living the rest of his days as a family man, he killed off the last Yakuza group in the provincial city of Shinjo. When he went back home with the intention of starting a new chapter of his life, he found his wife and daughter being held hostage by a group of masked men. The Kimen-gumi were apparently cleaning up the city, and they saw Sakata as a “demon” who could ruin it all for them. So, they needed to finish him and his family off to avoid this hypothetical outcome. For some reason, on that fateful night, only Sakata’s wife died. Ryo...

Netflix has unveiled its Japanese content slate for 2025, headlined by “Last Samurai Standing,” a period drama featuring 300 samurai warriors gathered at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto, lured by the promise of a 100 billion yen prize. The series stars Junichi Okada, who serves as lead actor, producer and action choreographer.
“When most people think about samurai, they think about this very glamorous period in Japanese history,” says Netflix Japan content head Kaata Sakamoto. “But what a lot of people don’t realize is that, towards the end of the Edo period, the samurai lost a lot of their glamour and their power. ‘Last Samurai Standing’ is about what would happen if these warriors — the toughest and best in Japan — all of a sudden became common people and had to fight for their lives. Think ‘Shōgun’ meets ‘Squid Game.'”

Killing isn't enough when there's hell to pay. Keanu Reeves may have now retired (mostly) as the dog-loving hitman, John Wick, but Netflix’s latest action thriller, which is set for release this month, has arrived to fill the bullet-shaped hole left behind by Baba Yaga. An adaptation of the manga "Oni Goroshi" by Masamichi Kawabe, Demon City brings to life this violent and visceral tale of a legendary hitman who, after his wife and daughter are killed, resurrects his particular set of skills on a bloody path of revenge. Sound a little familiar?
The gripping first trailer for Demon City has now been unleashed, and promises a quest for vengeance even more bloody and brutal than the endless vendetta John Wick embarks upon after a group of clueless gangsters make the fatal mistake of killing his beloved pooch.
