Negeri Para Ketua

Negeri Para Ketua brings a unique Medan-centric story to the screen, but despite its potential, the film struggles to deliver a cohesive and enjoyable experience. While the production value and color grading deserve credit for elevating the film's visual appeal, the storytelling and execution leave much to be desired.

The story revolves around five neighborhood leaders-Malik from Medan Utara, Acong (also known as Akong Acim) from Medan Barat, Joko from Medan Selatan, Binsar from Medan Tengah, and Rakesh from Medan Timur-who must navigate their differences to address a larger community issue. On paper, it's an intriguing premise that could have offered a blend of cultural insight and humor, but the final product falls flat.

The biggest letdown comes from the dialogue. Stiff and unnatural, it often feels like the actors are simply reading lines rather than embodying their characters. Eye contact is virtually nonexistent, making interactions awkward and unconvincing. The writing, too, feels rushed and uninspired, lacking depth and effort. The cultural aspects woven into the narrative are intriguing for locals but offer no context for non-Medanese viewers, leaving many scenes inaccessible or confusing.

The plot structure further compounds these issues. The story meanders without clear direction, and while it's billed as a comedy, the humor often misses the mark. Jokes land awkwardly, and the pacing drags in places where energy is sorely needed.

However, there is one saving grace: Joko's performance. As the most compelling character, he brings charm and relatability to a film that otherwise struggles to connect. His presence adds a spark of life that keeps you engaged, even when the rest of the movie falters.
