Brendan O'Carroll in Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie (2014)
Like all the traders in DublinÂ’s historic Moore Street market, Agnes Brown inherited her fruit and vegetable stall from her mother, as her mother did from hers, and so on across the generations. So when Agnes receives an outrageous tax demand from the Revenue Office itÂ’s not just her livelihood thatÂ’s threatened but her heritage, and her dreams for her daughter CathyÂ’s future.

While Maria and Rory embark on a hapless attempt to raise funds by swimming the channel, Agnes discovers thereÂ’s more to the tax demand than she first realised. The whole market is under threat from a ruthless developer. Agnes Brown is all that stands between Moore Street and the bulldozers.

As the deadline for payment looms, Mrs. Brown must take on the full forces of the Irish establishment to save the market and protect her heritage. Her only help, her family and friends: Winnie McGoogan, her eccentric neighbour; Buster Brady, DermotÂ’s dodgy best mate and his motley troop of blind trainee Ninjas; and Maydo-Archer, a barrister with an unhelpful affliction. As daughter Cathy turns her back on the family business, and unwanted secrets emerge from Agnes' past, could the Brown matriarch finally be out of her depth?

    Oh dear

I really looked forward to seeing this. I love the TV show. Put simply though, like so many great television comedies, it just doesn't work in a full length movie. Of course there are funny (or at least mildly amusing) moments, but just not enough of them to carry the rather absurd plot. The solicitor's character and affliction had rich comedic potential, but was wasted in style. Hopefully this disappointing effort will not damage the reputation of what is a great success story. If you get bored like I did, at least the last line gets the biggest laugh of the whole thing (at least it did when I was there). However, that says more about the quality of what has gone before than it does about that moment.

    Very poor.

Not sure what they were thinking.

If you have only seen the second version of the show, this movie is a bit confusing. For some reason they decided to go with things from the first series like Agnes having six kids and owning a vegetable stand. They also say that ninjas are from China and I'm pretty sure they weren't joking. The entire plot is non-sense.There's a scene where she eats breakfast at a diner. No matter which version of the show you go with, Agnes Brown would never go out for breakfast. The only good change is that Grandad has a much bigger part.He has more lines in this movie than he did in the entire series and he's really funny. For some reason they decided to use the fake bloopers in the movie which just doesn't make any sense, but it makes more sense than having Agnes push a pram around. The best part was seeing Brendan O'Carroll do a different character even though that character just sounded like Agnes with a lisp.Changing the subtitles to Russian when the Russians started speaking English was funny but this movie put too much emphasis on the serious stuff. While it's not a complete disappointment, it is more proof that TV shows should not be made into movies.

I so wanted to like this movie

I am a massive fan of the TV series and was really excited to hear that a movie was being made. It had some highlights but overall it was major disappointment. Sadly, much of the humour was very unoriginal or very dated (reminded me of Les Dawson) or low brow stereotyping of the Chinese and Russians that was so bad I actually cringed rather than laughed. There is something wrong when the funniest bit was the outtakes shown during the final titles.

I also found the sound track to be a bit over the top.

Guys you are better than this movie, the TV show proves this - maybe the formula simply does not port well to movies.

I hated it, and I'm a fan of the series.

The Authorities try to shut down Mrs Brown's fruit and veg stall.

Was the movie the point in time where the series started to dip, prior to this the show seemed to be at its peak, I think fans like myself wanted to love this movie, but sadly it just wasn't very good.

Why is it that so many films fail to translate well from the comedy TV series, it reminds me of the awful Nan movie, some genuinely funny moments in the TV series, here though, it just wasn't funny.

The jokes fell flat, it was quite a painful watch, they get away with the jokes over half an hour, but ninety minutes, it was just too much. One or two of the moments where the cast laughed at the mistakes were funny, sadly the actual planned gags were excruciating.

I'd class myself as a real fan of the show, and I will be one of those that watch it regardless, but this movie truly was a clunker.

Had this worked, more movies would surely have followed, sadly this just wasn't any good.

    Sadly it was awful.

    3/10.

    That's nice...

Anyone familiar with the show will not be surprised with what to expect here. Mrs Brown's curious mixture of shock humor and sentimentality plays as easily as ever. Not hateable in its own pedestrian way and they did manage to sort of make a plot worthy of being feature length but it's hard to imagine the arts being any less rich for its non-existence.

The sequence with the ninjas gives Connor a chance to show off his versatility as an actor but it just feels bizarre.

Recommended strictly for big fans of the series.
