Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie

Shedites | BBC piloting new sitcom starring Mrs Brown’s Boys creator
Brendan O'Carroll in Mrs. Brown's Boys (2011)
Mrs Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll is headlining a new sitcom called Shedites, written by his co-star Paddy Houlihan.

Like it or not, Mrs Brown’s Boys has consistently been one of the top rated sitcoms on the BBC since its debut in 2011. Brendan O’Carroll’s foul mouthed Mammy has sharply divided audiences and critics, but there’s no denying the comedy appeals to a lot of people, selling out multiple arena tours and transferring to the big screen in 2011 with Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.

It is perhaps surprising that it’s taken until now for O’Carroll to headline another sitcom for the BBC. He wrote an Army sitcom called Lebanese Outpost, which was in development at the BBC in 2021, but nothing has been produced.

According to the British Comedy Guide, Shedites comes from the pen of O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys co-star and co-writer Paddy Houlihan. O’Carroll stars alongside Tommy Cannon,...

Newcomers fail to excite box-office
Distributors launched 10 films last weekend but most struggled to sell tickets as many folks opted either to see titles that were already in cinemas, or stayed home.

Nationwide, takings improved by 8% to $14.1 million, according to Rentrak's estimates, a small uplift considering the wider number of choices for filmgoers.

Dwayne Johnson.s efforts in Australia to promote Hercules paid off reasonably well as Brett Ratner.s action film took top spot, earning $3.5 million. Pro-rata that is a bit better than the mediocre Us debut of $US29.8 million, where the film was outmuscled by Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, the Luc Besson-directed sci-fi thriller which rang up $US44 million.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes plunged by 42% to $1.8 million in its third outing, propelling its total to $15.5 million.

Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie, a spin-off of the BBC cross-dressing comedy starring Brendan O'Carroll, opened with a respectable $1.8 million, including previews. Women aged...

Judi Dench and Billy Connolly in La dame de Windsor (1997)
Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie: Review round up
Judi Dench and Billy Connolly in La dame de Windsor (1997)
Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie hit cinemas on Friday (June 27), as Brendan O'Carroll brought Mammy and co. to the big screen.

While the BBC sitcom has always proved to be hugely popular with viewers, the critics have remained less impressed. However, will a film version change their opinions?

Below, Digital Spy rounds up the reactions to D'Movie.

The Guardian - Mike McCahill

"You sense O'Carroll has diluted his own show's essence for wider multiplex consumption: while the sitcom could be broad, it was often clever with it, and never this bland.

"Unlike Guest House Paradiso or Kevin and Perry Go Large or Keith Lemon, D'Movie is never aggressively, in-your-face bad; it's more a flatly indifferent cash-in – and the devoted fanbase this character has accrued over the past decade may yet rally to ensure it does indeed become another Inbetweeners-style box-office bonanza: comedy is subjective, after all. Yet poking through the...

Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie Review
Brendan O'Carroll's strong willed Irish matriarch Agnes Brown first appeared on Irish radio in 1992, and in the last twenty odd years, the character has gone from strength to strength, appearing in books (the first of which inspired the Anjelica Huston starring Agnes Brown), stage plays, direct to DVD movies, and, finally, t.v, where Mrs. Brown and her f-word filled humorous antics have achieved a crazy amount of success. It was only a matter of time that O'Carroll would make the jump to the big screen, and now we have it with Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie. I will start off by saying that so far I've been resistant to O'Carroll's cross-dressing charms, not really caught up in the wave of hype that has made Mrs. Brown's Boys beyond popular in Ireland and the U.K. But as the cinema lights dimmed and the picture rolled, I found myself finally giving in,...

Mrs Brown's Boys star: "I definitely want to write another series"
Mrs Brown's Boys will "definitely" return for another series, star and creator Brendan O'Carroll has said.

O'Carroll told Digital Spy at the 19th National Television Awards that he is eager to write another series, though he is unsure if the hit sitcom will return in 2014.

"I definitely want to write another series," he confirmed. "We didn't do one last year because the time was taken up by the movie - shooting the movie over 10 weeks - so hopefully with the movie out of the way, we'll have the time this year."

Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie will be released internationally in cinemas this June.

"We've finished shooting and it's just being edited," O'Carroll revealed.

Mrs Brown's Boys was named Best Comedy at the National Television Awards.

Mrs Brown's Boys will not return to TV until 2015...
