The film is shot in black and white, which not only creates a nostalgic and contemplative feeling, but also reflects the mindset of the aging protagonist.

The narrative is non-linear and begins with a slow rhythm, in line with the quiet and repetitive life of the main character, "Gisuke Watanabe", a retired professor of French literature.

With the mysterious message "The enemy is coming" appearing on the computer screen, the film enters a surreal and psychological space, where memories, fantasies, and reality mix. - Aging and isolation: Gisuke is a symbol of a generation that welcomes death in silence and order. He calculates how much of his savings is left, and how much longer he will live.

The enemy within: The word "teki" meaning enemy, is here a metaphor for inner fears, dementia, and a disconnect from reality. Yoshida suggests that older people may see the enemy all around them, even in their neighbors or their dogs.

The border between fantasy and reality: The presence of his deceased wife, an old student, and a young girl he meets at a bar all appear in Gisuke's mind in vague and sometimes hallucinatory ways.

Dual cultural identity: Gisuke lives in a traditional Japanese house, but he is a professor of French literature and drinks Coca-Cola-a symbol of the Japanese oscillating between tradition and modernity, East and West.
