Mecha films, featuring a protagonist operating (usually piloting) a large robotic vehicle that's often humanoid in shape, are a far more prolific sub-genre in anime than in live-action features. Although the nature and details of the mechs vary wildly, mecha (a Japanese term derived from the English word 'mechanism') populate such esteemed series like the Gundam franchise, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Knights of Sidonia, each series spinning off a simple premise: there's a powerful enemy, and we need to drive powerful robots to fight it. Live-action mecha features like Guillermo del Toro's epic Pacific Rim and its sequel are rarer (surely in part due to the traditionally high cost to really land a live-action mecha film that actually looks good), but if Rich Ho's Heavens: The Boy and His Robot is any indication, we're likely to see more in the future.

We are currently in the midst of an international Kaiju renaissance of sorts. Godzilla Minus One won an Academy Award for its visual effects and was a hit across the globe. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was number one in the American box office for a second week in a row. And though he’s certainly “King of the Monsters,” Godzilla isn’t the only giant creature to get the spotlight. With the release of the Kaiju No. 8 anime, based off the wonderful manga by Naoya Matsumoto, the audience for stories of mysterious gargantuan creatures will grow even wider. But even if they don’t necessarily fit into the Kaiju Eiga (monster movie) subgenre of science fiction, the potency of the Kaiju has been explored in anime over and over again. There is a power to the idea of a mammoth monster with god-like strength, one that often...

Cristina Vee, a prominent American voice actress known for her roles in anime series like Konosuba and Hunter x Hunter, has permanently deleted her Twitter account following online harassment. The incident stemmed from a false accusation labeling her as a “Zionist,” which sparked a wave of online abuse.
The harassment began after Vee was included in a list of purported “Zionist” voice actors, compiled and posted by a user identified as @WhereIsmeCake. This quickly gained traction online, leading to targeted harassment directed at Vee, including hateful messages, escalating to death threats and online harassment campaigns.
Despite the user retracting Vee’s name from the list and issuing an apology acknowledging the mistake, the damage had already been done.

There are many great mecha anime, as it is one of the oldest subgenres in anime, but its history also means that there is a great variety within the subgenre. As might be obvious, many of these are nowhere near scientifically accurate, but they don't let realism get in the way of telling a good story.
These anime take their mecha action to the next level, dwarfing everything else in their scale or incorporating magical or mystical superpowers. From wars against alien empires to giant combining robots, these anime might not be the most realistic, but they are most certainly excellent.

Tsutomi Nihei, the author of two iconic sci-fi manga, Blame! and Knights of Sidonia, is going to apply his talents to fantasy with a new manga that will be published by Kodansha in the Monthly Comic Sirius magazine. Tsutomu Nihei has gained a cult following for his cyberpunk-inspired aesthetics that shone in the hit manga Blame! in 1997 and then in Knights of Sidonia in 2009.
With Shueisha's Shonen Jump releasing new manga to replace its most popular ones like One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen, Kodansha has to follow suit if it still wants to retain its the spot as Shueisha's biggest competitor. The company will start publishing a new fantasy manga, Tower Dungeon, that seems very promising, and it will be written and drawn by none other than Tsutomu Nihei. Coming off two award-winning sci-fi manga, Nihei is ready to change genre and hopefully take the industry by storm for the third time.

Space operas are a subgenre of science fiction dedicated to galaxy-wide adventures through the cosmos brimming with drama, action, and risky conflict. There's hardly a more influential and well-known example of this beloved genre than Star Wars, a revolutionary sci-fi franchise that changed the entertainment landscape forever. Yet, few know that Star Wars has a direct tie to Japanese culture, with George Lucas taking inspiration for his iconic trilogy from Edo-period history and samurai movies, namely Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress.
The influence goes both ways, as countless sci-fi anime clearly took a page out of Star Wars' book. Even if not directly inspired by Star Wars, many sci-fi anime series bear a strong resemblance to the genre's timeless classic, be it in themes, setting, plot structure, or general adventurous atmosphere. These science fiction anime are perfect for Star Wars fans looking for new content that captures the magic of exploring outer space.

Viz has rereleased the Wolverine: Snikt! manga by Tsutomu Nihei, bringing an unorthodox X-Men story back for new readers. Originally published in 2003, the series blends classic sci-fi plot points with a narrative that centers on the iconic X-Men member's abilities and physical structure. While not the usual comic fare from many perspectives, its unique characteristics make it a fascinating and compelling read.
Wolverine: Snikt! was published under Marvel's old Tsunami imprint, which aimed to produce manga-like comics to expand the company's reader base. It was previously a five-issue limited series, which has now been licensed and collected with a foreword by Nick Dragotta. Wolverine: Snikt! has the creative team of Tsutomu Nihei, Guru-eFX, and Cory Petit.

When Japanese manga-ka Hajime Isayama first wrote and illustrated "Attack on Titan" for serialized monthly publication in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine, he had no idea that it would go on to become an international mega-hit. Basing the manga storyline on a one-shot prototype he had written when he was 19, Isayama spent years fleshing out the dangerous, combat-prone world of "Attack on Titan," where massive, man-eating beasts named Titans terrorize and devour humans. Isayama took inspiration for these giant humanoid antagonists from various sources — some aspects were a natural evolution of his pre-school sketches, while others were inspired by contemporary serialized manga, including Tsutomu Nihei's "Knights of Sidonia." However, in a 2014 interview with culture magazine Brutus, Isayama clarified that his Titans were based on Mma-themed magazines, along with several real-life WWE and UFC fighters, and mixed-martial artists.

Based on the first manga by Tsutomi Nihei, of “Knights of Sidonia” fame, “Blame!” is a CGI anime, in the visual style that Netflix seems to promote intensely at the moment.
The story takes place in the distant future, where an infection has caused the automated systems humanity created to spiral out of control, resulting in a multi-leveled structure that keeps expanding itself in all directions, and a number of robots called Safeguards hunting down the remaining humans, under orders from the defense system of the machine. In one of the corners of the city, a group of humans, self-named Electro-Fishers, are struggling to survive in the middle of Safeguards and the lack of food. Netflix has released the final trailer for the upcoming anime feature, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, a little more than a week before the movie debuts on the streaming service. The movie already premiered in Japan and it's the first animated Godzilla movie in the history of the franchise, so it's kind of a big deal. Set to the theme song "White Out" by J-pop singer Xai, the trailer is an intense explosion of sound, color, and a lot of explosions. You can watch Godzilla: Planet of Monsters starting January 17th exclusively through Netflix. Interesting note though, Netflix currently has this marked as Part One. So, are they saving the second half of the movie for a later date?

Back in January, fans got their first look at Toho's first ever Godzilla anime movie, which is slated for release in Japan later this year. Earlier this month, Netflix picked up the streaming rights to this movie, which will be released theatrically in Japan before debuting worldwide on the popular streaming service. Today we have a new poster for this highly-anticipated anime movie, which doesn't give us a glimpse at Godzilla himself, but we do get to to see this futuristic world. We also have new concept art and the official synopsis.

The emergence of gigantic monsters "kaiju" and the ultimate existence that even can destroy the kaijus, Godzilla. After half-century of the war against the kaijus, the human race repeatedly defeated and decided to escape from the earth.

Back in August, Japan’s Toho film studio realized that it had somehow never created a Godzilla anime, and immediately went to work righting that wrong. We still don’t know much of anything about the project other than that it does seem to be a movie and not a TV show, but now ScreenRant is reporting that Netflix has picked up the film’s international distribution rights. The Godzilla anime will get an initial theatrical run in Japan—presumably so it can sweep the Japanese Academy Prize’s annual award ceremony—and then it will be heading to Netflix subscribers worldwide.
The film is coming from anime studio Polygon Pictures, which tends to specialize in CG-based stuff like Knights Of Sidonia, one of Netflix’s previous forays into the world of anime. The initial announcement also came with some very sci-fi-looking concept art, which you can see below. Based...

Studio Ghibli has a long history with Swedish author Astrid Lingren. Japan's most famous kaiju is to get an animated feature film, as Toho announces the "big-scale" Godzilla...
Godzilla may have passed his 60th birthday, but the city-levelling creature still holds as much fascination as he ever did. Animation will be handled by Tokyo's Polygon Pictures, the studio behind such things as Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence and Transformers Prime. As such,...

Toho, the Japanese production company behind Godzilla, has announced that they will be developing the first feature-length anime Godzilla movie with Polygon Pictures! The movie is currently just called Godzilla, and it's scheduled to be released in 2017.
The film is being co-directed by Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan series) and Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia). The script for the film is being written by Gen Urobuchi, who is a popular writer of graphic novels, light novels, and anime scripts. One of his most recent credits includes the 2015 feature animation film Psycho-Pass: The Movie. Shizuno offered up the following brief statement:
“We’re aiming to make a big-scale animation entertainment that people who love Godzilla and people who know nothing about him can both enjoy."
There's no information on what the story will entail, but we have the image above that comes from the official website. It looks like a sci-fi...

A nice addition to the sci-fi/mecha action genre, “Knights of Sidonia” stands apart from the plethora of similar titles for a number of reasons, both technical and in terms of script and general presentation.
The year is 3994, when the Earth has already been destroyed by a race of aliens called Gauna. Sidonia is one of the ships that has managed to escape the destruction along with a population of 500,000 people. Due to the lack of resources, the people inside have turned to cloning, asexual reproduction and genetic engineering that allows them to photosynthesize, in order to survive in deep space. The Gauna however, are still hunting them, and thus,...

When people alerted me about the two Beyond the Boundary anime feature films, telling me they were pretty good, I got interested, and wanted to check out the anime series first. Well, lo and behold: Sentai Filmworks recently released one of their super-pimped Limited editions for the series! being the magpie I am, and spotting the box for a hefty discount, I ordered it, and it has arrived. After the unbelievably lavish releases for Knights of Sidonia and especially Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, I kinda knew what to expect, or (rather) hope for. And thankfully Sentai Filmworks did not disappoint me: their Beyond the Boundary set fits right in with the others. The series itself is enjoyable if not exactly groundbreaking, and you might...

Netflix has teamed up with the animation studio who brought us Attack on Titan and Ghost in the Shell, Production I.G., to develop an original anime series called Perfect Bones.
The 12-episode series is being directed by Kazuto Nakazawa. According to the press release, the story is "set in the future where scientists have tried to create the ‘perfect human’ in hopes of keeping peace in the universe. After nearly achieving their goal through several children, the scientists send their ‘new humans’ for further training where they are kidnapped by an evil organization set on using their powers to implement their own concept of a new world order.”
That definitely sounds like a great concept for an anime series, and I'm completely on board with it. This has the makings of something awesomely epic. Erik Barmack, vice president, international originals, said in a statement:
“We are incredibly excited to work with Production I.

(Someone, really, really, Really liked this series!) When Us distributor Sentai Filmworks gets the urge to go to town on their releases, they go full throttle apparently. When I posted pictures earlier this year of their lavish Knights of Sidonia release, in several forums I got the reply: "Very good set, but have you seen their release of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions?" Ehm... no? The series itself wasn't high on my radar so it kind of slipped past me. And then yet again someone recently told me "Sidonia was great, second-best anime set of the year after Chunibyo!" Ok, them's fighting words. So when I came upon a discounted set of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, I snatched it up and Whoa... this is...

Us-based anime distributor Section 23 Films has a reputation for special limited editions which are pricey yet properly pimped. However, the "pricey" part can often been dodged somewhat by waiting a couple of months. This is always tricky of course with Limited Editions, as when they're gone, they're...well, gone. Meaning good luck trying to buy one for a decent price. Guess lucky though, and if the sets are still available you can often get them for half the original price. And this is exactly what happened with Section 23 Films' release of the first season of Knights of Sidonia, the science fiction anime based on Nihei Tsutomu's manga, in which humans survive in space on chunks of rock after the Earth has been blown up...

"Get Hard"
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart team up in this comedy about a rich hedge-fund manager who is sentenced to San Quentin; desperate for tips on how to survive prison, he looks for help from a black businessman, assuming he'll know what to do. That's not racist at all! As it turns out, Hart's businessman has never even had a parking ticket, so it's the blind leading the blind. The Blu-ray has tons of extras, including an unrated cut of the film, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and these featurettes: "Just Put Your Lips Together and Blow," "Get Hard Line-o-Ramas," "The Kevin Hart Workout," "Face Off with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart," "-Ferrell Fighting," "A Date with John Mayer,...

You've heard of Breaking Bad, Orange Is The New Black & House Of Cards, what about Danger 5, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Darknet and more?…
Quite understandably, column inches can't fill up quickly enough with praise for the likes of Netflix original series House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul and Marvel's Daredevil. What though, about some of the lesser-known series available on the UK streaming site?
Sweeping past the well-publicised riches of Doctor Who, Sherlock, Arrested Development, Community and the like, we've ventured into the slightly dustier shelf of TV shows available on Netflix UK that may be lesser-known or less widely celebrated than the big hitters out there, but are still richly deserving of your time. Some are new, some are old, some were cancelled long ago, some are ongoing, several are from outside the UK and Us.

This week annoyed by a loudmouth blogger of some repute, who declared anime for paedophiles and insulted more or less the whole of Japanese culture, I decided to watch Netflix original anime Knights of Sidonia. His comments have widely been circulated and condemned by many people and he’s just made himself look a fool, and all this just because Gus Van Sant might be directing a Death Note movie. I recognise that anime is not for everyone but still, by dismissing all of it you are missing out on an awful lot of classic work and influential stuff.
Knights of Sidonia has been billed as a Netflix original but it’s quite hard to imagine that they would have been involved in the production of something like this, it’s pretty far out there even for anime and its more likely that Netflix have done what they did with...
