Four Characters in a Fateful Night in the Desert

Based on a French stage play from the 1970s that I was previously unfamiliar with, Black Battles with Dogs ("Combat de nègre et de chiens" by Bernard-Marie Koltès). A friend of the director Claire Denis, she was finally able to adapt it for the screen.

A construction foreman, his new wife, his assistant, and a mysterious man just outside the fence.

We learn that a crime was committed. One of them is the perpetrator, another has lost dearly. All of them are caught up in the fence. It could have been so simple but of course it isn't.

lack of script

There's a lack of script. The concept is good, and the actors are generally good too, but the characters don't really have much to say they just keep repeating the same sentences over and over. Maybe the director wanted to create some kind of meditative suspense with this repetition, but it didn't work out. With this crew, these possibilities, and with a story that was already written as a stage play, the result could have been much stronger.
