Thomas Mann and Lily Mae Harrington in Some Freaks (2016)
When one-eyed high school senior Matt meets 250 lb. Jill, he falls more in love than he ever thought possible. However, after graduation comes and Jill moves cross-country to go to college, she then loses over 50 lbs and changes her appearance entirely - much to Matt's surprise when he arrives to visit her six months later. While Matt struggles to accept Jill's new choices, Jill begins to question whether Matt is really the man she wants to date. As the distance widens between them, the characters are propelled onto a collision course with brutality and loss, forcing them to confront who they are, who they were, and who everyone thinks they're supposed to be.

    Good moral

I like this movie very much,

For example, the movie really set their goal and they actually put something inside the movie that actually meant something. It's similar to a cause-effect type of thing. The characters knew their role and they played it very nice. This movie is just amazing!

    2 Halves of a Movie

This movie had such strong potential. The first half of the movie had complex, well-written characters. Beautifully acted too. The main characters were charming and yes, they did not fit the status quo and were victims of realistic bullying.

The second half of the movie took those same characters and made you hate them to the point of no return. The male lead even does something totally unforgivable at one point. The acting was the only saving grace.

This movie could have been inspiring. Instead it left me with a feeling of true disappointment.

    Lifeless

The characters were not likable, which is in most cases okay, but it feels this wasn't executed properly because they were also very unbelievable, These are not the kindred and damaged souls you'll connect to, it just a bunch of kids being annoying jerks. Unlikeable characters are fine and can be wonderful when portrayed correctly, but in this case I never felt bad or concerned for either protagonist. Mostly because, one again, the characters weren't buyable. The characters in the film are akin to a general list of high school stereotypes.

    Wow...

That, actually, didn't feel embarrassing - which is no mean feat considering the genre. Films focused around adolescence have a tendency toward awkwardness. They also often have balancing issues; over-focusing one one aspect while missing another - thus failing to hit the relevant sweet spot.

Somehow MacAllister McDonald manages to avoid ALL the potholes set out before him and delivers a delicate and relevant study of the adolescent mindset. Without being pretentious Some Freaks lures in the viewers into the teen spirit and keeps them there until the credits start roll.

Casting and acting are also beneficial to the end result; exploring a rebellious period in a low key fashion. Thanks for that.

    She Could Do Better

All in all a good movie. I see very well the heavy points that are being made. It's just that in this film one character clearly outgrew another. And the cute attempt to gloss over that at the end was disappointing to me. But it clearly shows that they drew me into the movie for me to make that statement! Lily Mae Harrington was outstanding.
