More than 60 years after shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke aired on television, westerns and neo-westerns are once again popular amongst audiences. But, with so many options now available on TV and online, it may be difficult to choose which series to watch.

Today’s best westerns (not to be confused with the hotel chain) capture the feel of early entries in the genre while staying relevant by incorporating modern dialogue and sociopolitical topics. This has allowed the genre to reach a wider variety of viewers than it might have otherwise done in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Wynonna Earp Brings Supernatural Elements to the Western Genre 2016-2021, Streaming on Netflix

Far from taking a traditional western approach, Wynonna Earp focuses on a descendant of lawman Wyatt Earp as she faces supernatural foes in her hometown of Purgatory. Another key character is the notorious Doc Holliday, who is played by Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon.

Wynonna Earp has such a strong fan following, and many are hoping an announcement for another installment – or possibly a full season renewal – could be coming!

At New York Comic Con, Wynonna Earp creator Emily Andras sat down with Colliders Therese Lacson to discuss her latest project, Wynonna Earp: Tales from Purgatory, an audio drama that fills in the gaps between the original TV series and the recent movie Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. Vengeance is a television movie special that released in September this year, that picks up after the events of the original Wynonna Earp series. Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) returns to Purgatory to face her greatest threat yet: a psychotic seductress out for revenge against her and everyone she cares about.

Cineflix Rights has closed several deals for “Irvine Welsh’s Crime,” starring Dougray Scott in his International Emmy award-winning lead role.

The series has been acquired by Telefonica’s pay TV platform Movistar Plus+ (Spain), Sbs (Australia), Rte (Ireland), Blue Entertainment (Switzerland), and Canal+ for viewers in Luxembourg, Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Netherlands.

“Irvine Welsh’s Crime” was commissioned by Itvx and BritBox in the U.K.

The show follows Detective Inspector Ray Lennox (Scott), a man engaged in his own disturbing battle while undertaking serious crime investigations in a city on the edge of the abyss.

The series, adapted by “Trainspotting” author Welsh from his own novel, also stars John Simm, Joanna Vanderham, Angela Griffin, Ken Stott, and Jamie Sives.

Wynonna Earp showrunner Emily Andras opens up about her hopes for the series' future on streaming.

Speaking to Collider, Andras was asked about the extra emphasis on sexuality and adult themes that were present in the recently released Wynonna Earp: Vengeance special, which premiered exclusively on Tubi. "Tubi was amazing," Andras said. "They were like, 'No rules. You can push the sexuality. You can definitely push the language.' The name of the game was elevation. Because we're doing a 90-minute special, we wanted to feel like you could only get it on Tubi in this format, but this isn't something you would've seen in Season 3, for example. So, I was stunned."

A few years after the show was cut short, a new special entitled Wynonna Earp: Vengeance will serve as a finale for the popular Western horror series. Debuting in 2016, Wynonna Earp is based on the comics of the same name and follows the titular hero as she returns to her hometown to do battle with the ghosts of those who were once gunned down by her great-great-grandfather, Wyatt. With its mix of Western tropes and horror, Wynonna Earp quickly became one of the most talked-about genre shows on TV at the time, and it translated into a four-season run.

Though the series did respectably in the ratings department and had good reviews, that wasn't enough to keep it going...

Wynonna Earp is one of those shows that never became hugely popular but that had a fiercely devoted fanbase for its entire run. Armed with her special gun Peacemaker, it's Wynonna's job to send reincarnated criminals called revenants back to hell. She did that for four straight seasons on Syfy, but still has unfinished business. “The past is never that far behind us, and some of it might be showing up looking for vengeance, so to speak, in the special,” creator Emily Andras teased to Entertainment Weekly, putting that writer's brain to good use with some colorful verbiage. “The heart, the laugh-out-loud wit and action-packed sequences that were always a part of the series are still in the special. This cast has not missed a step.

“Wynonna Earp” wasn’t going to keep the fans waiting forever for more stories.

The cult series wrapped it’s four-season run back in 2021, and thanks to a small but incredibly mighty fan base that campaigned vocally online, a new 90-minute special is set to air on Sept. 13 on Tubi called “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.”

Creator Emily Andras told Entertainment Weekly that the show had stories planned for a fifth season but Season 4 was – luckily – written with some closure in mind. Now the special will tie things up once and for all.

“We had been ordered for a season 4 and a season 5, but things were kind of up in the air,” Andras said. “I thought: It’s better to write an ending that is satisfying and if we’re blessed with another season, I can blow it all up. My gamble paid off, for better or for worse.”
