The Dutch bank ABN AMRO is doing well and ambitious, aiming to grow into a major international player. Brilliant banker Rijkman Groenink's ambition to become CEO nearly fails due to his haughty lack of social skills. His friends end up getting him named, but even those who end up with promotions themselves start to doubt their choice. His excellent relations with the Ducth finance minister our outweighed by his often disastrous part in crucial merger and take-over negotiations.

Now Groenink finally made it as CEO, he haughtily turns on his staff, bullying even those who made his career against all odds. His overt arrogance proves a major handicap, despite a fine reputation and ECB standing, in attempts to grow fast by taking over foreign banks, like an Italia one snapped up by the competition as he lacks finesse to master the big boys game.

The outgoing bank chairman is pressured by the board of directors to get the Special Credits manager approved as his successor.
