New Regency Lands Erotic Thriller Spec ‘Fixation’ From ‘Wednesday’s Erika Vazquez & Siena Butterfield; Made Up Stories Producing
Image
Exclusive: In a highly competitive situation, New Regency has landed Fixation, an erotic thriller spec from Wednesday scribes Erika Vazquez & Siena Butterfield, Deadline has learned. Pic will be produced alongside Emmy winner Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories, with Papandrea producing for the company, along with Steve Hutensky, Jeanne Snow, and Claudia Park.

While not much is known about the film’s plot, we’re told it centers on a couple’s therapist who is drawn into a dangerous triangle of lust, lies, and manipulation.

This marks the second collaboration between Papandrea and New Regency, following their partnership on David Fincher’s Academy Award–nominated Gone Girl. It also represents the second collaboration between Papandrea and New Regency’s Nirokhi Raychaudhuri, who previously served as creative executive at Netflix on the thriller Luckiest Girl Alive starring Mila Kunis.

Word of the project comes at a time when the erotic thriller...

‘The Running Man’ Dashes A Week Later, 18hz’s ‘Primate’ Busting Out In January 2026
Image
Paramount is going later with its Edgar Wright-directed, Glen Powell-starring The Running Man, setting a November 14, 2025 release date to take advantage of access to Imax screens. The previous date for the redo of the Stephen King was November 7.

Additionally, Paramount has dated Primate from Walter Hamada’s genre label 18hz for January 9, 2026. We also understand Primate will be making its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.

Running Man moves away from 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Predators: Badlands and Mubi’s Die My Love, which are already set to be released November 7. It will now run into Lionsgate’s Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and Neon’s Osgood Perkins horror pic’s Keeper. That’s quite the crowd of genre and fanboy fare ahead of the Thanksgiving stretch.

Set in the future, Running Man follows a man who joins a game show where contestants, who are...

Jason Statham's Mutiny Delayed, Aims for Summer 2026 Release
Image
Jason Statham's upcoming action thriller Mutiny has been delayed. Directed by Jean-Francois Richet, the movie stars Statham as Cole Reed, an employee who is set up to take the fall for his boss's murder. With a script from Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis, the Beekeeper star is joined by Annabelle Wallis, Roland Moller, Jason Wong, Ben Catwright, and many others.

Earlier this year, Lionsgate announced that Mutiny would arrive on Jan. 9, 2025, in the week following Universal's M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te.

However, now, according to Deadline, Gerard Butler's Greenland 2: Migration has replaced Mutiny for the Jan. 9 slot, while Statham's new action thriller is eyeing a summer release. Presently, the movie doesn't have a date attached to it. It's also unclear what the reason is behind the delay.

What This Means For Mutiny

Mutiny began production in September 2024 and wrapped in November, and has been in post-production since the beginning of this year.

$37M Horror Movie Flop Is Now Finding Its Audience
Image
While there are many months still to come, 2025 has proven itself to be incredibly inconsistent in the horror genre thus far. While Sinners impressed critics and audiences upon its release in April and continues to succeed on streaming, other movies have underperformed expectations.

This has happened to distributors who are usually major voices within the horror genre. A24, for example, has yet to produce a horror or thriller film this year that was successful both critically and commercially. They had back-to-back flops with both Opus and Death of a Unicorn, and then even Bring Her Back, which got great reviews, did not have a huge box-office take home.

Another company that has struggled this year is Blumhouse. They started off the year on a rocky note with their remake of Wolf Man. After that movie underperformed, they had another divisive film with The Woman in the Yard.

Blumhouse unfortunately had...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Fails to Slay at the Global Box Office Following Digital Debut
Image
Blumhouse boss Jason Blum recently went on Matt Belloni’s The Town podcast to discuss the slump that the company is currently in, following the box office failure of a string of titles across 2024 and 2025. In fact, Blumhouse hasn’t had a bona fide hit since late 2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s, which, ironically, it didn’t see coming. Blum admitted that the company might have overestimated the cultural relevance of the first M3GAN film, which rode a wave of organic social media publicity and grossed over $180 million worldwide a couple of years ago, because M3GAN 2.0 has barely scraped past the $35 million mark. It’s already available on PVOD platforms, following a disappointing run that puts a large question mark on the property’s future.

With under $25 million domestically and just around $15 million from overseas markets, M3GAN 2.0 has grossed $37 million at the worldwide box office so far. The...

'Other Mommy': Josh Malerman Horror Adaptation Finds Its Young Star
Image
One of 2024's best horror novels is getting the film treatment, and seems to be on the fast track to development after recently casting its young lead. Written by Josh Malerman (Bird Box), Incidents Around the House is set to be retitled to Other Mommy when it hits the big screen in 2026 thanks to Universal and Atomic Monster, the same company behind 2021's Mortal Kombat and its upcoming sequel.

Per Deadline, eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) has snagged the lead in Other Mommy, taking on the role of Bela, the novel's protagonist. Directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Nathan Elston, she joins previously announced cast members Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass and Dichen Lachman.

Basic Instinct is getting an ‘anti-woke’ reboot courtesy of its original screenwriter
Image
Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is said to be writing a reboot of his own 1992 erotic thriller, Basic Instinct, in a deal worth $4m.

Basic Instinct, one of the highest-grossing films of 1992, is getting a reboot. The erotic thriller will be dragged out of the 1990s by Amazon MGM Studios, who’ve also made a deal with the first film’s screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas, to write the script.

Continuing Eszterhas’s form as one of the best-paid screenwriters in Hollywood history, the deal is said to be worth some $4m, with the screenwriter receiving $2m upfront and the rest if the film gets made. The script for the original Basic Instinct sold for $3m following an aggressive inter-studio bidding war, which indie studio Carolco eventually won.

After that, Eszterhas received about $1.7m for jotting down a brief story idea on the back of a napkin. The idea eventually became 1995’s Showgirls.

But we digress.

M3GAN 2.0 Digital Release Date Revealed After 19 Days in Theaters: Real Reason Why the Sequel Failed
Image
M3GAN 2.0 is officially headed for a digital release, and it’s just been 19 days since its theatrical release. This move suggests just how poorly this sequel performed at the box office, compared to the original. In the much-hyped follow-up to the 2023 hit M3GAN, we saw many returning faces like Allison Williams, Jenna Davis, and even new cast members.

But the Gerard Johnstone directorial shifted its tone from horror-comedy to action-sci-fi, and the audiences didn’t really seem to follow. So, let’s look at the scale of its failure and then understand why exactly it tanked at the box office!

This 58% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Sequel That Bombed at the Box Office Sets Digital & Physical Media Release Date
Image
There have been a ton of incredible horror films for genre fans to chew on this year. From original gems like Companion to blood-soaked franchise returns like Final Destination Bloodlines, there's much to scream about. However, not every sequel has been a success. The biggest example recently was M3GAN 2.0. The Blumhouse sci-fi action comedy that was light on horror has barely done what its critically-acclaimed original film did in its opening weekend back in 2023. Now the AI panic film is near the end of its theatrical run. With that has come its digital and physical media release dates.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have announced that M3GAN 2.0 will be coming to paid VOD digital platforms on Tuesday, July 15th (Tomorrow) for $24.99 Usd. That's just 18 days after its debut in theaters. The sequel will then come to 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on September 23rd. This will include the previously announced...

Atomic Monster & Blumhouse ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ Adds Hayat Kamille

Exclusive: Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has cast Hayat Kamille in the Atomic Monster/Blumhouse production for New Line with Warner Bros Motion Picture Group.

The Wild Cherry and Vikings: Valhalla actress joins the already set cast of Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, Shylo Molina, Billie Roy, Veronica Falcon and May Elghety.

The plot is under wraps (no pun intended). The movie will hit theaters on April 17, 2026.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is produced by James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville, with writer-director Cronin also serving as executive producer under his Doppelgängers banner. Michael Clear and Judson Scott are also executive producers.

Kamille recently shot the series-regular role of Maryam in Nicôle Lecky’s Wild Cherry for BBC One. She currently stars as one of the series regular roles Mariam in the latest series of Vikings: Valhalla, created by Jeb Stuart for Netflix.

Blumhouse's $20M Action Movie Disappointment Is Getting An Unrated Cut
Image
M3GAN 2.0 is getting an unrated cut despite being a $20 million box office disappointment. The follow-up to Blumhouse's sci-fi action movie M3GAN takes place two years after the lifelike AI doll went on a murderous rampage and sees many of the original cast returning.

Allison Williams reprises her role as M3GAN's creator Gemma, Violet McGraw returns as Cady, while Amie Donald and Jenna Davis are again the killer robot's physical performer and voice actor. Despite the 2023 movie being a box office hit for Blumhouse, the sequel failed to match its success. Since it opened on June 27, it has only made $20 million against a $25 million production budget.

Still, during an interview with Discussing Film, M3GAN 2.0's Gerard Johnstone revealed that an extended unrated version will be released. The director teased that the unrated cut will include "a few" extra scenes that didn't make it into the theatrical version to...

M3GAN 2.0 Sought Terminator 2’s $517 Million Glory But Got Joker 2-Level Rejection Instead, And Deservingly So (Opinion)
Image
M3GAN 2.0 Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)

M3GAN 2.0’s horror-turned-action experiment has malfunctioned worse than any android, demonstrating precisely why studios should content the urge to transform beloved genre properties into mainstream blockbusters without proper foundation.

The Blumhouse sequel’s catastrophic $10.2 million domestic opening weekend registered an embarrassing 66% decline from the original, effectively scaring off its shot at becoming a lucrative franchise. I, for one, deem the executives utterly misjudged fans’ expectations! Scroll to read why.

M3GAN Wanted Terminator’s Glory And Overestimated Its Popularity

Where the original M3GAN succeeded by adhering to horror and slasher conventions and satisfying its core demographic, the sequel abandoned everything that made the property succeed, pursuing a progressive approach to personify its android and empower its “female” villain.

Box Office Update: Jurassic World Rebirth stomping its way to $141 million five-day total
Jonathan Bailey, Scarlett Johansson, and Mahershala Ali in Jurassic World: Renaissance (2025)
Jurassic World: Rebirth seems to be opening right in line with our earlier projections, pulling in about $85 million over the three-day weekend. When expanded to the five-day holiday frame, Deadline has it at $141 million. That makes it one of the year’s stronger openers—but not quite the triumph some might have expected.

For one, Jurassic World: Dominion actually outperformed Rebirth’s projected five-day take in just three days back in 2022. Another concern is the film’s CinemaScore, which sits at a very modest B—not exactly a promising sign for strong word-of-mouth, especially with James Gunn’s Superman looming just over the horizon.

Still, Rebirth should easily land in the $300 million domestic range. And if the international numbers come in strong, expect another Jurassic World entry within a couple of years.

Meanwhile, F1 held its own over the holiday frame, closing in on $25 million for the weekend and looking...

Blumhouse's New Sci-Fi Action Movie With 57% Rt Score Hits Major Global Box Office Milestone After Disappointing Debut
Image
Blumhouse has become one of the leading brands when it comes to the horror genre. Since its inception in 2000, the studio has been behind plenty of horror hits, including Happy Death Day, the Paranormal Activity franchise, and The Purge series. As a result of many of their successes, the studio has grossed over $6 billion, with the Five Nights at Freddy's adaptation being their highest-grossing movie.

Unfortunately, the studio has been enduring a slump, with the majority of the new releases having lukewarm box-office performances. Just this year, Blumouse has released four movies so far, none of which have hit profitable margins. Additionally, except for Drop, most of their films are not well-received by critics. As that unfortunate streak continues, their latest movie has finally passed a major milestone.

Blumhouse's $18M Box Office Disappointment & Studio's Future Openly Addressed By Exec: "We All Thought Megan Was Like Superman"
Image
M3GAN 2.0 has underperformed massively at the box office, and the Blumhouse Productions failure has already been addressed by the head of the studio. The first M3GAN was one of Blumhouse Productions' biggest box office hits in recent years, and its viral status meant that Blumhouse Production had high hopes for the film's 2025 sequel, which was released on June 27.

However, M3GAN 2.0 has only made $20 million as of the writing of this article, which is low compared to the film's estimated $25 million budget. In an interview with The Town with Matthew Belloni, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum discussed the film's box office failure, stating that they thought they "could do anything" with M3GAN. This led to them changing genres and the decision to release M3GAN 2.0 in the summer.

Blum acknowledges that the sequel failed to meet expectations, with them overestimating M3GAN's potential. However, he states that "if you look at any massive talent.

Soul Searching Begins at Blumhouse After Cold Streak Capped by ‘M3GAN 2.0’: “Not the Sequel Audiences Wanted”
Image
Jason Blum — who struck out on his own as an independent producer in the early 2000s after leaving Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax — was haunted during those years by the fear that he would never succeed on his own.

That’s when he received a DVD of a tiny horror film titled Paranormal Activity that was shot for less than $15,000 by unknown filmmaker Oren Peli. Blum and others believed the film could be a hit and tried to find it a distributor. One door after another was slammed shut, but Blum wouldn’t give up and eventually helped garner the interest of none other than Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks. Spielberg himself watched the movie and was thoroughly spooked, according to Hollywood lore.

DreamWorks and its then-partner Paramount Pictures first released the film in more than a dozen college towns in late September 2009 before rolling it out nationwide as Halloween approached. Paranormal...

Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
“We Thought M3GAN Was Like Superman” – Jason Blum Shares Honest Thoughts on ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Failure
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
After the box office success of M3GAN in 2023, which scared up $180 million worldwide, it seemed like a sure thing that Blumhouse had a hit new franchise on their hands. In addition to a sequel, they also ordered up a universe-expanding spinoff movie titled SOULM8TE – currently dated for January 2026 release – and the future for the killer doll seemed bright.

But M3GAN 2.0 crashed and burned at the box office, making just $10.2 million across its opening weekend. The sequel’s predecessor hit an opening weekend total of $30.4 million, which paints a clear picture that something went very wrong here. But what exactly happened?

In a post-mortem interview with the podcast The Town that just released today, Jason Blum shares his surprisingly honest thoughts about the box office failure of M3GAN 2.0, which Blumhouse was at point expecting to debut with upwards of $45 million. That tracking number went further and further down as the weeks went on,...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Bombs: 5 Reasons the Sequel Couldn’t Match the Original’s Box Office Success
Image
It may be time to put a pin in the M3GAN Cinematic Universe.

“M3GAN 2.0” flatlined at the box office, generating a paltry $10 million domestically and $17 million globally in its first weekend of release. While not a catastrophic result given the sequel’s $25 million budget, those ticket sales represent a fatal decline in interest from the original, 2023’s “M3GAN.” The first film ignited to $30 million domestically and $45 million globally and became a sleeper hit for Universal and Blumhouse, ultimately earning $180 million against a $12 million budget.

Lackluster reviews and an unfavorable release date didn’t help in terms of turnout for “M3GAN 2.0,” though moviegoers were surprisingly fonder of the sequel (which earned a “B+” grade on CinemaScore exit polls) compared to the first (which landed a “B” score). The trouble is that too few people were incentivized to buy a ticket in the first place. Gerard Johnstone returned to...

M3GAN 2.0's Very Bad Box Office Opening Raises Serious Concerns For The Future Of Blumhouse
Image
It was not a very good weekend for Universal Pictures and, more specifically, Blumhouse Productions. The house that Jason Blum built released the once-much-anticipated sequel "M3GAN 2.0" over the weekend and, even though the original was an unexpected breakout hit in 2023, its follow-up came in well below expectations. So much so that we must now question what future (if any) awaits this once-promising franchise and, more broadly, what is going on at Blumhouse.

Director Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN 2.0" opened to just $10.2 million domestically. It certainly didn't help that Brad Pitt's "F1" opened to nearly $60 million and served up a major crowd-pleaser. International audiences weren't all that much help either, with the killer robot sequel pulling in $6.8 million overseas for a $17 million global start. When we consider that the first "M3GAN" opened to $30 million in North America alone, that number looks awfully rough.

The sequel picks up two years...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Crashes at the Box Office With $10 Million Opening; What Happened?
Image
When M3GAN debuted to $30 million back in January 2023, it seemed like a new horror icon had been born. The killer doll’s debut movie went on to scare up $180 million worldwide on a reported production budget of just $12 million, seemingly cementing M3GAN’s status as a modern fan favorite who could go on to lead not just her own franchise, but her own universe.

Blumhouse and Universal went all-in on M3GAN in the wake of that first movie’s box office success, announcing not only a bigger budget sequel but also a spinoff titled SOULM8TE. That film, described as Fatal Attraction with a sex bot, is set for release in theaters on January 9, 2026, but Blumhouse may be rethinking the future of the M3GANVERSE this week.

Because M3GAN 2.0, well, it just crashed and burned at the box office in its opening weekend.

M3GAN 2's Global Opening Weekend Box Office Stumbles, Makes Less Than Half The Original's Debut
Image
The global debut of M3GAN 2.0stumbles compared to the original sci-fi horror movie. The sequel, released on June 27, focuses on relaunching and upgrading M3GAN to combat a dangerous military android, known as Amelia. The cast includes Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jemaine Clement, Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, and Amie Donald and Jenna Davis, who portray M3GAN. While the original film became a surprise hit in 2023, early box office numbers signal that M3GAN 2.0 may have trouble reaching similar success.

According to Variety, M3GAN 2.0 was set to earn $10.2 million domestically in its opening weekend, failing to match the $30.4 million of M3GAN. Globally, the sequel isbringing in a total of $17 million, which is significantly lower than the $45 million M3GAN generated two years ago.

This is a big deal for Apple. They’ve been making movies for a few years now, but their track record in theaters hasn’t been great. They’ve had some hits on streaming, like “Coda,” which won an Oscar in 2021, but most of their films didn’t do much in cinemas.

Some of Apple’s earlier movies, like “Argylle,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and the expensive historical dramas “Napoleon” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” didn’t get much love in theaters. Instead, people mostly watched those at home on Apple TV+.

Record-Smashing Debut: Apple’s Latest Original Races to $144M Global Opening
Image
Apple just scored its biggest box-office success ever with “F1,” which brought in $144 million globally during its opening weekend. In North America alone, the film made $55.6 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday, June 29.

This is a big win for Apple, which has had a mixed history when it comes to releasing movies in theaters. While they’ve won awards — like the Oscar for “Coda” in 2021 — they haven’t had much luck turning their movies into big theater hits.

Films like “Argylle,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and big-budget titles like “Napoleon” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” were more successful on their streaming service, Apple TV+, than at the box office.

But “F1” was Apple’s first attempt at a true summer blockbuster. They won the rights after a bidding war and teamed up with Warner Bros. to get it into theaters.

Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and Damson Idris in F1 (2025)
Brad Pitt’s ‘F1’ Delivers Apple’s First Box Office Hit With $55.6 Million Debut, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Fizzles With $10 Million
Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and Damson Idris in F1 (2025)
It’s lights out and away we go at the box office as “F1,” a big-budget racing drama starring Brad Pitt, impressively revs to $55.6 million in its domestic opening weekend.

With great reviews and a promising “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls, “F1” landed in the middle of expectations of $50 million to $60 million. At the International box office, the film collected a strong $88.4 million from 78 markets. Those initial ticket sales are significant given “F1” is an adult-skewing tentpole that’s not part of an existing film franchise — a rarity in today’s I.P.-dominated movie theater landscape. Directed by “Top Gun: Maverick’s” Joseph Kosinski, “F1” follows Pitt as a retired Formula One driver who is convinced to return to the popular motorsport to coach a slick rookie (Damson Idris) and save a failing team.

“F1” also marks the first commercial hit for Apple, the tech giant that financed the nearly $250 million movie.

James Wan and Allison Williams Offer Exciting Update on 'M3GAN' Spin-Off 'SOULM8TE'
Image
As M3GAN 2.0 brings the titular killer robot back to theaters for one more “AI goes rogue” rampage, news about the spin-off titled SOULM8TE has emerged. James Wan, franchise producer, and Allison Williams, star of M3GAN 2.0 and executive producer of SOULM8TE, have talked about the horror film which recently wrapped production. "It's like Fatal Attraction but with robots," Wan says, and well, we're sold.

Wan and Williams spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the recent release of M3GAN 2.0, and used the opportunity to also address the spin-off written and directed by Kate Dolan. The film follows a man who has lost his wife, and seeks a companion in a realistic android. As expected, the entity becomes sentient, and develops an obsession with its owner. SOULM8TE stars Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit and Oliver Cooper, among others.

Blumhouse's New Horror Movie With 58% Rt Score Getting More Sequels Depends On One Major Condition
Image
M3GAN: 2.0 is the latest horror movie from Blumhouse, but getting more sequels depends on one major (but expected) condition. The original M3GAN revolves around an AI companion robot, designed by Gemma (Allison Williams) to protect her niece Cady (Violet McGraw), who famously goes on a murderous tear. The sequel premiered on June 27, 2025, and has audiences divided, earning a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN 2.0 sees Gemma bringing M3GAN back to defeat a military android, Amelia, played by Ivanna Sakhno.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer James Wan teased what would need to happen for more M3GAN movies. As Wan explained, should M3GAN 2.0 perform "well enough," more sequels could eventually be made. Read his comments below:

Listen, fingers crossed. Let's hope the second one does well enough that we can get more M3GANs.

How New M3GAN Spinoff Will Be A Mature Twist In The Franchise Explained By Producer
Image
M3GAN 2.0 may have only just arrived in theaters, but producer James Wan has revealed how the new SOULM8TE spinoff movie will fit within the burgeoning franchise. First announced in January 2024, the upcoming spinoff has been touted as a more mature take on the AI world first established in 2022’s original M3GAN.

Written and directed by Kate Dolan, SOULM8TE's plot will follow a grieving husband who attempts to cope with the death of his wife by purchasing an AI companion. Featuring a cast that includes Claudia Doumit (The Boys), David Rysdahl (Oppenheimer), Lily Sullivan (Evil Dead Rise), and Oliver Cooper (Californication), the spinoff is set to arrive in theaters on January 9, 2026.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wan confirmed that while SOULM8TE is set in the same world, it follows a more adult story separate from the PG-13 constraints of the M3GAN films. Comparing it to the erotic thrillers of the 1990s,...

James Wan, 48, Claims the 'M3GAN' Spin-Off Will Be "More Adult"
Image
With M3GAN 2.0 currently playing in theaters, the sequel to the 2022 hit, fans have high hopes for what comes next: the upcoming M3GAN spin-off, SOULM8TE. Scheduled for early next year, the follow-up was announced in development in June 2024, with Kate Dolan directing and rewriting the screenplay, based on a previous draft written by Rafael Jordan. Furthermore, M3GAN co-producer James Wan will return in the same capacity through his company Atomic Monster, and unsurprisingly, he has grand plans for SOULM8TE, which he recently shared with EW, teasing a more grown-up perspective.

In SOULM8TE, slated to release in theaters in January 2026, David Rysdahl plays a man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. He attempts to create a truly sentient partner but inadvertently turns a supposedly harmless love-bot into a deadly soulmate. Evil Dead Rise star Lily Sullivan portrays the android, while...

Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
Michelle Pfeiffer-Inspired Amelia Takes Aim at M3GAN in Sequel Launch
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
M3GAN’s screen rivalry will wear a Scarface scowl and cartoon curves, director Gerard Johnstone says, recounting how the sequel’s new android foe Amelia started as a homage to Michelle Pfeiffer’s Elvira Hancock before drifting toward Jessica Rabbit once the wardrobe team “loosened the silhouette”; he felt Pfeiffer’s icy glamour gave the character the lethal allure he wanted.

Johnstone describes Amelia as a “dark mirror” whose design had to look “grungy and tactile” beside the pristine doll that danced into pop culture two years ago. Played by Ivanna Sakhno, the autonomous military engagement android flips the premise by forcing M3GAN into uneasy hero mode after defense contractors weaponize her stolen code.

Following a New York premiere on 24 June, M3GAN 2.0 opened wide on 27 June through Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. Producers Jason Blum and James Wan re-team with stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, while Amie Donald and...

Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and Damson Idris in F1 (2025)
Box Office: ‘F1’ Leads the Pack With $25 Million Opening Day, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Not So Fab in Fourth Place Debut
Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and Damson Idris in F1 (2025)
Apple Studios is scoring its biggest opening ever with the Brad Pitt racing thriller “F1,” headed for first in its box office debut. Meanwhile, Universal’s “M3GAN 2.0” isn’t catching the same spark in its opening, projecting a fourth place start behind holdovers “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Elio.”

On top, “F1” hit the track with $25 million across Friday and previews from 3,661 locations. The movie is playing in Imax auditoriums and most other premium-large formats too. Apple outsourced distribution here, partnering with Warner Bros. The team-up has made a splash.

Industry tracking was all over the place for “F1,” given the relative rarity of big-budget adult-skewing productions outside of established film franchises (though the Formula One Group’s branding and grand prix racing tournaments are still globally popular IP — the basis for most summer tentpoles). “F1” is now on pace to hit the upper end of its pre-weekend forecasts,...

Blumhouse's New Horror Sequel To $181M Hit Has Critics & Audiences Very Divided On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
While the original movie thrilled audiences and critics alike, M3GAN 2.0 has been deeply divisive on Rotten Tomatoes. The original, released in 2022, follows the story of an AI doll who becomes sentient and expresses a drive for violence. M3GAN was a resounding success, earning $182 million against a $12 million budget and quickly earning the right to a sequel.

The follow-up was released in theaters and sees M3GAN returning to life to combat another rogue AI. Allison Williams returns as Gemma, alongside Violet McGraw (Cady), Amie Donald and Jenna Davis (M3GAN), Ivanna Sakhno (Amelia), and more. With a budget of around $20 million, it faces high expectations of success given the original's box office performance.

Unfortunately, M3GAN 2.0 is struggling to entertain critics. It has already received a Rotten designation on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to its 57% Tomatometer score. However, audiences have been more favorable, offering an 84% Popcornmeter score, but it leaves a...

M3GAN 2.0 Has Critics and Audiences Divided After Underwhelming Debut
Image
The killer doll is back. After the massive success of the first installment, the robotic doll is back in M3GAN 2.0, but the highly anticipated sequel didn't receive the same warm welcome as its predecessor.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse's M3GAN was an unexpected horror hit, and received praise for its campiness, humor, and horror. The sequel brought the same team back, but it didn't have the same impact, especially with M3GAN 2.0 leaning more into action territory than horror. However, after its release in theaters, M3GAN 2.0 has critics and audiences divided on Rotten Tomatoes, with the sequel earning a "rotten" score from the critics but a better one than the original from the audience.

M3GAN 2.0 debuted with a positive score, but barely: 61%. As more reviews came in, the sequel struggled to keep its "fresh" badge, and it now holds a "rotten" score of 58% out of 144 reviews. The critics...

M3GAN director James Wan says spin-off SOULM8TE is like ‘Fatal Attraction but with robots’
James Wan has teased SOULM8TE will be like “Fatal Attraction but with robots”.The 48-year-old director is producing the upcoming M3GAN spin-off, and has now revealed SOULM8TE “embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the ‘90s”.Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wan said: “SOULM8TE is basically set in the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the '90s. M3GAN 2.0 Has a “Distant Cousin” in R-Rated Spinoff That Sounds Much, Much Darker in 2025
Image
Today is the day, M3GAN 2.0 finally arrives in theaters to continue its reign of uncanny valley terror. But amid excitement surrounding the sequel, a recent announcement from Blumhouse Studios raised the stakes with a new project associated with the same franchise. Yes, we’re talking about the SOULM8TE spinoff.

While it’s not known if the titular character’s story will continue in the spinoff, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum told ScreenRant that SOULM8TE might just be the horror movie of our generation. Set to be a darker, bloodier “distant cousin” to the M3GAN franchise, this new R-rated spinoff will dive headfirst into our 2025 reality—one where loneliness meets tech addiction in the most terrifying way.

Well, this is a distant cousin. SOULM8TE is an R-rated movie. I can’t say whether M3GAN is in the movie or not, but SOULM8TE has a very different feel from the two M3GAN movies.

SOULM8TE: a “Fatal Attraction with robots” set in the M3GAN universe
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
Back in April, Blumhouse Productions spent some time in the spotlight during the Universal panel at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was there to witness an early preview of SOULM8TE, which is “a new movie in the M3GAN universe” that is set to reach theatres on January 2, 2026. Bumbray reported, “Seems similar to Companion. Centers on a sexbot that becomes so obsessed with her “owner” that she kills anyone close to him and goes on a murder spree. Looks more violent (and kinkier) than M3GAN but has the same humor. When a woman she’s about to kill says ‘Women aren’t supposed to be pitted against each other,’ she answers, ‘Don’t start that girl power shit with me.’” Now that M3GAN 2.0 is about to make its way out into the world, Entertainment Weekly was able to dig up some more information on SOULM8TE,...

James Wan Says ‘M3GAN’ Spin-Off ‘SOULM8TE’ is “Like ‘Fatal Attraction’ But with Robots”
Image
With M3GAN 2.0 hitting theaters, producer James Wan is looking ahead to the next stage of evolution: SOULM8TE, a spin-off movie that functions as an R-rated erotic thriller.

“M3GAN, obviously, dabbles in the PG-13 world, the younger demographic. We always felt like there might be a more adult story to tell, and that’s really what SOULM8TE is,” Wan tells EW. “SOULM8TE is basically set in the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the ’90s. It’s like Fatal Attraction but with robots.”

Currently in post-production, the film follows a man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. He attempts to create a truly sentient partner but inadvertently turns a supposedly harmless love-bot into a deadly soulmate.

M3GAN 2.0 Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed — How Does It Stack Up Against The First Film?
Image
M3GAN 2.0 Vs M3GAN Rt Scores ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

M3GAN 2.0, the eagerly awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed sci-fi horror hit M3GAN (2022), is all set to hit the big screen on June 27, 2025, including Indian cinemas. The first film was well-received by critics and audiences alike, but is the sequel an upgrade (better rated) over the original? Let’s compare the Rotten Tomatoes scores of both films to find out.

M3GAN vs M3GAN 2.0 – Rotten Tomatoes Scores Compared

While the original film earned a highly impressive 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, its upcoming sequel currently holds a much lower rating of 65%. As the time of writing, the sequel is trailing behind the original by a staggering margin of 28%. While the score could shift slightly as more reviews come in, a major change seems unlikely. It remains to be seen whether the audience will agree with critics. The verdict will be out very soon.

Brad Pitt’s ‘F1’ to Top the Box Office but Projections for Apple’s Big-Budget Racing Drama Are All Over the Place
Image
Will “F1” finally deliver a commercial hit for Apple?

The tech giant’s big-budget racing drama, starring Brad Pitt as a Formula One driver who is coerced out of retirement to coach a slick rookie (Damson Idris), is targeting a promising $50 million to $60 million in its debut. Given the rarity of adult-skewing tentpoles that aren’t part of existing film franchises, projections appear to be all over the place with some tracking services suggesting a $35 million to $40 million start.

“F1” represents a major gamble for Apple, which has entered the theatrical space with epic ambitions (“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” were two early swings) but not a single profitable film to show for it. “F1” carries a hefty budget above $200 million and needs to become a global hit to justify its price tag and validate Apple’s big screen commitment.

Internationally, “F1” is aiming to collect $75 million or more from 77 markets.

Whether M3GAN Will Appear In "Very Different" Upcoming R-Rated Spinoff Addressed By Producer
Image
M3GAN 2.0 is nearly here, but talks of a spinoff movie are already underway thanks to a recent announcement from Blumhouse Studios. It has already been confirmed that M3GAN 2.0 is not the last film in the M3GAN franchise, and while it will continue on, it isn't yet known if the story of the titular character will be continued alongside it.

Screen Rant's Liam Crowley at the M3GAN 2.0 red carpet premiere event, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum was asked about whether or not M3GAN will appear in SOULM8TE, the upcoming M3GAN spinoff. The film will follow a man who buys an android woman after the death of his wife. If M3GAN is anything to go by, things will go horribly wrong.

Blum declined to answer whether or not M3GAN would appear in SOULM8TE, saying that the spinoff is a "distant cousin" of the original two films. According to Blum,...

M3GAN & Saw Crossover Chances Get Positive Response From Blumhouse Chief After Taking Over $1Bn Horror Franchise
Image
M3GAN 2.0is almost here and the producer of the franchise has just addressed whether the titular killer robot will appear in a potential Saw crossover. M3GAN was one of Blumhouse Productions' biggest hits in recent years, thanks to it going viral in 2022, leading to the release of an even weirder sequel, M3GAN 2.0.

Speaking to Screen Rant's Liam Crowley at the M3GAN 2.0 red carpet premiere, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum was asked about the future of the M3GAN 2.0 franchise. Specifically, Blum was questioned about the possibility of a crossover between the Saw and M3GAN franchises, thanks to Blumhouse getting the rights to Saw after buying the franchise. In response, Jason Blum said

"Never say never. It hasn't occurred to me personally, but it's a great idea."

So, this means that no crossover of this sort is currently in development. However, Blum is open to the idea, meaning...

Are you ready for M3GAN 3.0? Allison Williams has been dreaming about a trilogy
Amie Donald and Jenna Davis in M3GAN 2.0 (2025)
M3GAN 2.0 hits theaters later this week, and if the sequel proves to be a hit, it’s safe to say that M3GAN 3.0 could very well be on the horizon. At least, that’s the hope for Allison Williams. The actress—who plays M3GAN’s creator—told THR that while she’s not assuming anything just yet, she and the rest of the team are eager for the chance to return.

“We don’t want to presume anything, but I would say a lot [of forethought],” Williams said. “That’s all I’m going to say. We love to dream; that’s why we’re all in this business. We have big aspirations of big dreams, and I certainly don’t feel like I’m done making these movies with these people and this tonal landscape and the subject matter. So, yeah, I have been dreaming of a third, for sure.

Allison Williams Has “Been Dreaming of” a ‘M3GAN’ Trilogy
Image
M3GAN 2.0 star-producer Allison Williams welcomes the opportunity to burn the candle at both ends.

Besides the June 27 sequel to Gerard Johnstone’s 2023 smash hit about a murderous android doll, Williams has wrapped two other films as star and producer, including the latest Colleen Hoover adaptation, Regretting You, and the murder mystery, Kill Me. (She’s also an EP on the upcoming M3GAN spinoff, Soulm8te.) Williams’ peers regard her as a natural problem solver, and so it’s currently only a question of when, not if, she starts a production banner of her own.

“I’ve been thinking about [starting a production company] lately, especially now that, as a kind of rule, I don’t really do anything that I’m not also producing,” Williams tells The Hollywood Reporter in support of M3GAN 2.0’s June 27 theatrical release. “I feel so lucky to be in a position where I can have a seat at...

2026 Could Be One Of The Biggest Years Ever At The Box Office - Here's Why
Image
To anyone who follows such things even casually, it's no secret that the box office has been in rough shape for the last handful of years. The pandemic completely upended the movie business, with theaters all around the world shutting down for months on end. Meanwhile, the advent of premium VOD pioneered by movies like "Trolls World Tour" made it easier than ever for people to watch films at home. The recovery has been slower than expected. The good news? Things have really picked up in the back half of 2025 following a very slow start. Even better news? 2026 looks like it could be the year the industry at large has been waiting for.

Though it is far too early to start making box office predictions for specific movies, just looking over the release calendar for 2026 reveals a possible record-breaking year. At the very least, it should, with relative ease, become...

Universal declares “biggest, most diverse slate of any studio” at CineEurope

Universal Pictures International (Upi) honed its annual CineEurope presentation yesterday (June 17) into a single powerful message: that the studio offers “the biggest and most diverse slate of films of any studio”.

Those were the words of Upi president of distribution Veronika Vandenberg, who reminded the assembled cinema operators at the Barcelona convention that the company is offering 27 wide releases this year, having “consistently delivered the highest wide-release volume among all major studios post-pandemic”.

Like other studio distribution chiefs presenting their upcoming slates at CineEurope, Vandenberg emphasised Upi’s belief in “the power of cinema and the unparalleled theatrical experience”, while...
