Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban: Producer Shibu Baby John Clarifies The Film Was Not A Financial Loss
Image
Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban was not a financial mess? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Malaikottai Vaaliban was one of the most anticipated Malayalam films, thanks to its massive budget and the reputation of its director, Lijo Jose Pellissery. Known for his unique, critically acclaimed films, Lijo had built a strong pan-Indian fan base. Not to mention, superstar Mohanlal, who has proven himself several times over with his superb acting skills as a result he has fans all over South India, further contributing to the immense pre-release buzz.

However, despite all the excitement and high expectations or perhaps due to the overexcitement and hype. The film unfortunately failed to resonate with both audiences and critics. According to Sacnilk, the movie managed to collect Inr 29.75 crore worldwide, with an India gross of Inr 16.6 crore. Meanwhile, Onmanorama reported that the film was made on a hefty budget of Inr 65 crore, making it a huge financial flop at the box office.

Nani Breaks Barriers: The Paradise to Release In Spanish, English Other Languages
Image
Is Nani all set to go global with his work? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Titled The Paradise, Nani’s film will be released in eight languages, including two international ones, English and Spanish, according to a report by Gulte. The remaining six languages will be Indian, covering all four major South Indian languages Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, along with Hindi and Bengali.

Described by the makers as a “raw statement,” the film might have intense or violent themes. The first glimpse is set to be unveiled on March 3. Interestingly, Nani will also dub for the Spanish version himself, making him the first Telugu actor to do so.

The online buzz and excitement surrounding the film indicate that it will be a hardcore, violent action film. Given that Nani and Srikanth Odela’s previous collaboration, Dasara, was an intense action drama, expectations are naturally high.

Kanappa Teaser 2 Review: Skip The Entire Akshay Kumar – Mohanlal – Vishnu Manchu Part & Focus On 2 Seconds Of Prabhas!
Image
Kanappa Teaser 2 Review: 2 Seconds Of Prabhas Steal The Show! ( Photo Credit – YouTube; Instagram )

The second teaser of Vishnu Manchu and Mohanlal’s Kanappa has finally arrived, and it is all over the place, at least for the Hindi version. In fact, what should have been the savior – Akshay Kumar’s cameo as Lord Shiva stands totally irrelevant and unimpressive!

However, there is still hope since the teaser has one of the best moments for which fans might be waiting. The teaser heavily emphasizes visual spectacle, which raises the question of whether the film will prioritize substance over style. While visual grandeur is important, a compelling narrative is equally crucial.

Kanappa teaser provides a glimpse of a very huge starcast. It includes Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu, Prabhas, Mohanlal, Akshay Kumar, Sarat Kumar, Kajal Aggarwal, Arpit Ranka, Brahmanandam, Saptagiri, Mukesh Rishi, Madhubala, Aishwarya Bhaskaran, Brahmaji, Devaraj, Raghu Babu, Siva Balaji, Sampath Ram,...

Bad Girl: High Court Rejects Petition To Stop Certification Of Tamil Movie
Image
What Did The Madras Court Rule About Bad Girl?(Photo Credit – YouTube)

The Tamil film Bad Girl is making headlines due to a court case filed against it. The case was initiated to prevent the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) from approving the film’s release. It was filed by the President of Rashtriya Sanadhana Seva Sangam, a social welfare organization focusing on developing the Brahmin community.

According to the organization, certain Tamil films portray Brahmin society in a negative light, and Bad Girl is alleged to be one such film. The controversy stems from the movie’s storyline, which follows a Brahmin woman embracing modern culture and social influences, leading her to a deplorable life, as reported by Live Law.

The organization also accused the filmmakers of deliberately making the movie to defame Brahmin society, its culture, and its ethics under the guise of exposing cultural corruption within the community.

Image
Good Bad Ugly Teaser Review: Fans Are Worried For Ajith Kumar! ( Photo Credit – Twitter )

Ajith Kumar does not have time to ponder upon Vidaamuyarchi’s failure as the superstar moves to his next release, Good Bad Ugly. The teaser of the film has finally arrived, and it’s a fiery cocktail of Ak’s raw energy with a dash of gritty action scenes flavored with violence. Helmed by director Adhik Ravichandran, who is loved for his edgy narratives, he might have unleashed a beast here with Ak arriving in suave and dapper avatars!

From the very first frame, the teaser plunges us into a chaotic yet visually spectacular world, suggesting almost nothing about the narrative except for the fact that it is a brutal adaptation of Prime Video’s Japanese series Like A Dragon: Yakuza!

Redditors have been discussing the teaser, and while fans are finding it mindblowing calling Good Bad Ugly a potential blockbuster,...

Triple H Could Never Make Samoa Joe the Villain He Really Was but ‘Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza’ Turns Him Into an Ultimate Heel

Samoa Joe’s redemption arc as a menacing villain is slowly taking shape. His failure to become one of the top contenders in WWE under Triple H’s leadership enabled him to explore other routes, which included playing the antagonist in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza.

In Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, Joe’s presence seems quite dominating as he manages to create a menacing screen presence with his bodily demeanor and voice modulations. Given the history of Like a Dragon’s franchise with writing good antagonists, Joe might be able to find what he was meant to do.

Drama Review: Like a Dragon: Yakuza (2024) by Sean Crouch and Yugo Nakamura
Image
The live-action adaptation of Sega’s “Like a Dragon” video game series, and the first since the 2007 film “Like a Dragon” by Takashi Miike, was one of the most anticipated series of the year, considering the popularity of the game. What the creators presented on Amazon Prime is a series that borrows the characters and setting of the original 2005 Yakuza game as well as its 2016 remake Yakuza Kiwami but the story is a loose adaptation and follows an original plot, though some major plot-points are retained. Let us see how they fared.

The story unfolds in two parallel axes. In the first one, in 1995, Kazuma and three other youths from the orphanage he grew up in, Yumi, Akira, and Miho, successfully heist a local arcade, only to realize it is one actually run by the the Dojima Family, a powerful yakuza organization that rules Kamurocho.

The following contains spoilers for Secret Level Episode 2, "Sifu: It Takes a Life," which debuted Dec. 10 on Prime Video.

When video games are adapted into movies and shows, fans will always tune in. Netflix did Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, as well as a Castlevania cartoon. Prime Video also did Like a Dragon: Yakuza in 2024, based on the titular Sega series. Now, the latter streaming service has Secret Level out.

This anthology is spearheaded by the man who directed the first Deadpool film, Tim Miller. The second chapter, "Sifu: It Takes a Life," is one of the most propulsive and pulverizing chapters. It is based on the Sifu video game and focuses on a young man seeking revenge for the death of his teacher. In the process, Secret Level perfectly melds action,...

All of these projects are among 2024's most-anticipated TV shows, but two of them stand out as obvious frontrunners in the category. And no matter which of the two wins,...

Like A Dragon: Yakuza Ending Explained - The Truth Behind Kiryu & Nishiki's Final Battle
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Like a Dragon: Yakuza.

Kiryu and Nishiki finally came to blows in Like a Dragon: Yakuza's ending, as the series wrapped up its major plot points while creating a few mysteries for the future. Prime Video looked to cash in on the popularity of the Yakuza franchise by creating its own series, and while the reviews have been fairly mixed for the platform's latest adaptation, the show concluded with an explosive ending. All of Like a Dragon: Yakuza's major characters got involved in some capacity during the final episode, but it was Kiryu and Nishiki's long-brewing feud that stole the spotlight.

Although the duo were childhood friends, things took a turn in the finale as they found themselves doing battle while the rival Yakuza clans fought outside the tower. Meanwhile, the Sawamura sisters attempt to rescue Aiko's daughter, Haruko, before setting...

‘Like A Dragon: Yakuza’ Finale Recap & Ending Explained: Who Is The Devil Of Shinjuku?
Image
Only after watching the first three episodes of Like A Dragon: Yakuza did I learn that it’s actually based on a popular video game, and suddenly my brain fog cleared out and I could breathe again. Like A Dragon: Yakuza is a 6-part TV show that frontloads you with so much new information in the first episode, as if you knew everything about this world before you even heard the name of the show. After learning it was a video game, it all made sense to me. This isn’t meant for an audience such as myself; it’s for people who actually care about these games and these cool characters they’ve been watching since 2005. As a new viewer, the show is absolutely chaotic and doesn’t really go into explaining anything, which makes it boring and quite off-putting. I mean, there’s an interesting story here, for...

Ryoma Takeuchi On Becoming Kazuma Kiryu for Like a Dragon: Yakuza
Image
When non-gamers think of video games, it's not exactly common for them to draw an instant connection to potential movie or TV series adaptations. If the last decade has proven anything, however, it's that some of the most compelling stories can be found and explored through video games. While not every video game has a compelling story to mine and adapt, a lot of people might be surprised how easy it is to find inspiration in gaming. Successful game-to-television adaptations, like HBO's The Last of Us and Prime Video's Fallout, are just the tip of the iceberg, with Peacock's Twisted Metaladapted from the 1990s post-apocalyptic driving gameeven striking an unexpected chord with viewers.

The more story-driven the game, the richer the opportunities for adaptation, as Prime Video discovered over the last year. Fresh off the back of their Fallout adaptation's success, the Amazon-owned service recently released the first three episodes...

Like A Dragon: Yakuza Actor Ryoma Takeuchi Shares His Take On The Younger, Emotionally Vulnerable Version Of Kazuma Kiryu
Image
Sega's Like a Dragon series, known mainly as Yakuza in the West, has entertained audiences for nearly 20 years with its mixture of martial arts action, character-driven storytelling, and delightfully convoluted crime drama plotlines. Now, the story of the original 2005 title is being adapted for a Prime Video original series, called Like a Dragon: Yakuza.

Though ostensibly based on the main plotline of the original 2005 Like a Dragon game, the series borrows elements from different games in the series, including Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 4. The series takes many creative liberties with the story in order to present a more character-driven story that nevertheless features many unexpected twists and turns that will surprise even longtime Like a Dragon fanatics. The series stars Ryoma Takeuchi as series hero Kazuma Kiryu, though this version of the character is significantly younger than his video game counterpart. Furthermore, the show bounces between multiple time periods, showing...

Japanese original series Like a Dragon: Yakuza is here, and this is an especially exciting time for those of you who are familiar with the Sega video game that inspired the Prime Video show. Though if there's one thing I've learned from these projects that are adaptations of games, you don't have to be familiar with the gaming part of it to enjoy the story. And this one is no different!

‘Like A Dragon: Yakuza’ Episodes 1-3 Recap & Ending Explained: Where Was Aiko?
Image
I don’t know about you but watching Like A Dragon: Yakuza gave me something of a headache because of just how confused I was watching it. This is not to say the show itself is convoluted, but my lack of any knowledge about Japanese culture and struggling to keep up with the names of the characters as they navigate two timelines definitely had me lost. The show tells the story of 4 orphans, Kiryu and his 3 friends, who want to flee their orphan lifestyle. They live in a foster home and plan a heist at their local arcade. What they don’t realize is that they’ve just planned on robbing the Yakuza family that rules the entire area, the Dojima family. Soon after stealing the money, the 4 decide to get on a bus and escape the place; however, the next day, they don’t end up making the bus,...

Like a Dragon: Yakuza Review – A Serious Take on a Playful Franchise
Image
It’s not easy to go from a popular video game to a live-action show, especially with a title as well-known as Yakuza, which is now called Like a Dragon. Since the beginning, gamers have been hooked on this series, which combines intense action, deep writing, and a unique sense of humor all set in Japan’s criminal underworld. The Yakuza games are known for having complex plots and interesting characters. The stories unfold in the fictional city of Kamurocho, which is as much a character as the people who inhabit it.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza is spread out over six parts on Prime Video. It tries to catch the spirit of the 2005 game, especially Kazuma Kiryu’s story. The show tries to tell a story in two different time periods by showing Kiryu’s life as a youngster in 1995 and again when he comes back to Kamurocho in 2005 after serving a long jail term.

Like A Dragon: Yakuza Cast & Character Guide
Image
Like a Dragon: Yakuza is an upcoming Prime Video series based on the popular video game franchise, and the cast is full of incredible talent. Although it isn't entirely clear exactly which characters might make a surprise cameo throughout the series, Prime Video's Like a Dragon: Yakuza trailer revealed plenty of big names will feature, and the story looks like it will be based on the franchise's first entry, as each game tends to change its roster of characters. As a result, audiences are bound to be treated to some exhilarating action when the crime show debuts.

Given how popular the source material is, Like a Dragon: Yakuza has plenty to get right from the games, but the talented cast looks like it will manage this. The trailer already suggested that the show will maintain the unorthodox, quirky tone that has become synonymous with the gaming franchise, and most of...

How Does the ‘Like a Dragon’ TV Show Compare to the Game?
Image
There’s a recurring trend in the gaming industry where developers and studios rush to announce a live action adaptation only for it to never materialize. Look no further than Netflix’s fumbling of its Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation, a fan-favorite franchise whose streaming debut was announced and subsequently halted after two years in limbo.

More often than not, it’s smarter for creators to keep mum until their projects are nearly done and ready for social media show-and-tell. This is how Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoko Studio shocked fans...

‘Like a Dragon: Yakuza’ Review: A Competent but Sandpapered Video Game Adaptation
Image
Kiryu Kazuma (Takeuchi Ryôma) needs a new suit. In Like a Dragon: Yakuza’s second episode, the former enforcer, fresh off a decade-long stint in prison, tries on an outfit in a store, only to be harassed in his fitting room by a trio of ruffians. When their leader gets overly pushy, Kiryu wallops the group with an obvious lack of both effort and enthusiasm. After the posers scurry off, Kiryu takes one more look in the mirror. The glass, cracked during the tussle, sends jagged lines across his reflection, embodying his fractured sense of self.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza is loosely adapted from the first entry in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Like a Dragon video game series, an expansive and unflinchingly eccentric Japanese crime saga. In the shopping scuffle and other scenes, the Amazon series evokes the works that inspired it by playing with tone, physicality, and humor...

Like A Dragon: Yakuza Review – A Solid Yet Disappointing Adaptation
Image
Though I’ve never experienced any of the games in full, I have long been fascinated by the Like A Dragon series, or Yakuza as its known in the West. Apart from being arguably Sega’s biggest franchise not starring any anthropomorphic hedgehogs, the games have long held a reputation for deftly balancing more serious and dark crime drama with an often wacky, over-the-top world, as well as solid, action-focused gameplay.

Those two disparate tones naturally made me curious as to how the franchise would be adapted to television and I figured no matter what, the end result would be fascinating to watch. Said end result, Like A Dragon: Yakuza, isn’t necessarily as compelling as I hoped; but it’s an enjoyable enough series that longtime fans will probably get a kick out of.

What is Like A Dragon: Yakuza about? A still from Like A Dragon: Yakuza

Hear Me Out: Amazon Restarting the God of War Series From Scratch Is a Good Thing
Image
God of War is the latest first-party franchise under the PlayStation Studios banner to receive the live-action treatment in partnership with Amazon Prime Video. Studio executives praised the scripts penned by the original showrunners; unfortunately, their hard work has now been wasted and the company decided to move in a different direction.

While it is unfortunate to see what could have been worthwhile and quality content shelved or scrapped, perhaps the decision to start from scratch is an opportunity to improve. Adapting one of the most popular video game franchises of recent years can be challenging, and the executives must have their reasons behind the decision to restart.

Shinobi Video Game Adaptation In The Works With Extraction Director Attached
Image
Extraction director Sam Hargrave is developing an adaptation of Sega's Shinobi video game franchise. First released as an arcade game in 1987, Shinobi sits in the hack-and-slash genre, with Joe Musashi serving as the franchise's main character in numerous installments. The overarching storyline of many of the games sees Joe facing off against Zeed, an evil ninja crime syndicate. There are now 12 Shinobi games in total, with a thirteenth on the way.

Now, Universal Pictures reveals that they're partnering with Sega to bring a Shinobi movie to life. Hargrave, who directed both Extraction (2020) and Extraction 2 (2023), is attached to direct the project, with Ken Kobayashi (Sunny) set to write the screenplay.

Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce the film through Marc Platt Productions, while Dmitri M. Johnson will produce for Story Kitchen. For Sega, Toru Nakahara will produce. Mike Goldberg will executive produce the Shinobi film, with Timothy I. Stevenson co-producing.

Lee Byung-hun and Lee Jung-jae in Squid Game (2021)
Watch a new teaser trailer for Squid Game season 2 on Netflix!
Lee Byung-hun and Lee Jung-jae in Squid Game (2021)
Squid Game, the biggest show to ever air on Netflix, is returning for a second season. Netflix has dropped a new teaser trailer, above, which features Gong Yoo's mysterious salesman getting ready for a day of work tempting indebted, down-on-their-luck workaday stiffs into playing a game in the hopes of making some money. The hope is that eventually they'll participate in the Squid Games, an elaborate tournament where poor people put their lives on the line for the entertainment of a group of voyeuristic billionaires, with one of them walking away with a grand prize at the end. The others will all die.

Squid Game blew all the way up when the first season dropped in 2021; not only is a well-acted, well-written thriller, but it strikes a chord in a world where the divide between the uber-rich and the rest of humanity keeps widening. The teaser trailer doesn't give...

10 Things Amazons Like A Dragon Show Needs To Get Right About The Yakuza Games
Image
With Like a Dragon: Yakuza set to release on Amazon Prime on October 24th, it remains to be seen how close to the video game series this new show will be. The Yakuza games have long been known for their incredible stories, and many are hoping that the translation of these stories to television will be a smooth one. Still, after the success of Prime Video's Fallout and other video game adaptations for TV, there is plenty to be excited about.
