The Strange Dark

What a wonderful treat it is to watch this film! It's so well-constructed, well-executed, well-written, well-edited, well-acted, and beautifully shot. Messineo is a skilled Writer/Director story-teller. This movie was the gem of this year's festival season! Can't wait for it to get a wider release.

Part thriller, part sci-fi, and at the same time a great story about a family in crisis -- it's like a really good episode of The Twilight Zone meets Knives Out. This movie is so much fun to watch -- the dialog is great! The actor's are wonderful and it has something to say. Can't recommend this film highly enough.

It's refreshing to see a film that hits its mark so well. It grabs ahold of you from the start and surprises you at every turn. Nili Bassman and Caleb Scott are a perfect team of misguided divorcees trying to navigate their way through a separation in the middle of a potentially deadly crisis. Their acting is impeccable. Other surprises on the journey I don't want to spoil!!

The script and the acting are the stars of this film. The story went in surprising directions and the acting kept me riveted and eager for a good outcome for the characters. Smart, funny, and thrilling. The fact that the story is set in one location makes the film that much more impressive. They say every story's already been told, and it's difficult nowadays to subvert an audience's expectations, but this film certainly does that. It was never predictable and I was delighted to be taken along on the journey of these characters. A truly original story with wonderful actors and solid direction. Highly recommend!

The Strange Dark is a tightly plotted low budget thriller elevated by a clever script, deft direction, and fantastic performances.

This is a masterclass in low-budget filmmaking that grips you from the first minute and doesn't let up until the credits roll. One house, seven characters and a simple, compelling premise provide the engine but it's the non linear structure, perfect pacing, and excellent performances that make this so captivating.

The balance of tension and genuine humour reminded me of early Coen brothers while the sci-fi premise and clever plotting has echoes of The Man From Earth and Timecrimes.

The cast are phenomenal with each character having their moment to shine but it's Carmen Borla's turn as Maria that really stands out. She bristles with intensity throughout while delivering some of the film's funniest moments.

Overall, this is a hugely impressive debut feature that's entertaining from start to finish.
