Why Punish the Audience?

I know that FOX has canceled this show, and Season 5 is the final season. I understand that it's frustrating, probably for the writers as well.

But do the writers really have to take it out on the audience like this? Is the goal to turn every character's story into a tragedy, to serve up a plate of misery, just so they can feel like they've gotten their revenge?

If this is how they plan to wrap things up, it's incredibly disappointing. Fans have invested years into these characters, and instead of giving them a satisfying send-off, it feels like we're being punished.
