Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Review: The Beloved Franchise Bows Out on a Confident Parting Note
Image
All good things must come to an end. Even “Downton Abbey,” the beloved historical drama that launched an instant fandom in 2010 when it started off as a lavish TV series about the inner workings of an aristocratic post-Edwardian family, the Crawleys, and their devoted staff.

Since then, writer-creator Julian Fellowes has gracefully transformed the series into an equally alluring three-film trilogy. And with the elegant and sharply humorous final edition, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” he proves yet again that he knows exactly how to harness the elements that made the show so steadily captivating, beyond its gorgeous costumes and detailed production design: a commitment to consistent character work across the era’s social class lines, as well as a handsomely sober portrayal of the past with a steady gaze toward the future.

In that, many hardcore “Downton” devotees will know that one of the mainstay themes of the franchise...

Image
Andrew Garfield is set to star alongside Katherine Waterston in Paul Greengrass’ upcoming untitled period war film set in medieval England, which Jason Blum will produce through Blumhouse and Focus Features will distribute domestically.

Garfield will play a legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of 14th century monarch King Richard II, whose downfall became the basis of a drama written by William Shakespeare. As the war burns across England, the rebel forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival.

Production on the film is set to begin this fall, with Greengrass and Blum producing alongside Gregory Goodman and Joanna Kaye.

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ reviews are split on whether this really should be the end
Image
The Crowleys and the ever-hospitable staff downstairs of Downton Abbey are back for their third adventure in manners and manors on the big screen, and the first reviews are in ahead of its Sept. 12 opening in the States.

This outing sees Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and family dealing with the societal repercussions from her recent divorce. Light drama and discussions about the shifting nature of the world ensue.

So far, notices for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale have been politely positive, promising fans of the Julian Fellowes-penned series more of the same.

"True to its title, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale works hard to provide closure to fans for their 14 years of devotion,...

Downton Abbey 3: Michelle Dockery On Lady Mary's Ending & Maggie Smith Tribute
Image
Star Michelle Dockery recently shared her thoughts on Lady Mary's ultimate end in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and what it was like for her character to pay tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is slated to be the end of an era for creator Julian Fellowes' stunningly popular period drama franchise.

While Fellowes hasn't fully confirmed that we'll never see the Downton estate again, it is the end for this generation of the Crawley family. This includes Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary, the eldest Crawley sister and current caretaker of Downton Abbey. Mary's arc in Downton's storied history revolved around her numerous romances...

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Review: Elegance as an Argument
Image
The year is 1930. The world, teetering on the edge of economic collapse and ideological transformation, has little time for the genteel problems of the British aristocracy. Yet, within the stone walls of Downton Abbey, time moves differently. The film opens with a sentiment that one of its characters speaks aloud but which hangs unspoken over every scene: the past is a more comfortable place than the future.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is less a story and more a curated farewell tour of that comfortable past. It returns us to the Crawley family as they face what might be their final chapter, a story defined by legacy, the bitter taste of public scandal,...

Box Office Predictions: The Conjuring: Last Rites to exorcise the top spot as Weapons continues to run free
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in The Conjuring: L'Heure du Jugement (2025)
The spookiest season of the year is fast-approaching, and you know what that means. The box office will get much scarier as studios treat audiences to jump scares, demented family members, and things that go bump in the night. The onset of Autumn also marks the back-to-school rush, with financial priority changes, wardrobe updates, and photos of kids offering up too much personal information on their parents’ social media. Interestingly, the beginning of this season kicks off with an ending, thanks to The Conjuring: Last Rites, which stands to claim the top spot at the box office.

Michael Chaves directs The Conjuring: Last Rites from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg,...

Downton Abbey Bids Farewell As The Grand Finale Premieres In London
Hugh Bonneville, Paul Giamatti, and Michelle Dockery in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025)
The Crawleys took a final bow in London as Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale held its world premiere on September 3, with cast and creators marking the period saga’s capstone ahead of its theatrical rollout. Focus Features says the film is set in the early 1930s and follows Lady Mary as a public scandal collides with tightening finances at the estate, forcing difficult choices about how— and by whom—Downton will be run. The feature opens in theaters on September 12.

The event arrives 15 years after the series’ 2010 debut and follows two prior films in 2019 and 2022. At the premiere, longtime cast members spoke about closing the story, with Hugh Bonneville praising...

Hugh Bonneville Urges “International Community” To Intervene In Gaza City During ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Red Carpet Interview
Image
Hugh Bonneville used his appearance on last night’s Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale red carpet to issue an impassioned plea for the “international community” to intervene in Gaza.

Bonneville was asked by an ITV reporter to talk about the final chapter of the Downton saga but instead started by intently staring into the camera and directly addressing the conflict.

“Before I talk about the fluff and loveliness of our wonderful film, what’s about to happen in Gaza City is indefensible and the international community must do more to bring it to an end,” Bonneville said.

Barely skipping a beat, he went on: “Downton Abbey is a lovely film and we are going to celebrate 15 years of it tonight.”

Bonneville was speaking as the conflict dominated proceedings over in Italy at the Venice Film Festival. Gaza drama The Voice of Hind Rajab received a 23-minute standing ovation at...

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Bows in London With ‘No Real Plans’ for More, but ‘Who Knows What the Future Holds?’
Image
The heavens opened over London’s Leicester Square on Wednesday evening as “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” had its world premiere, with pouring rain drenching the media line and fans who waited for hours to glimpse the beloved cast. It was a quintessentially British franchise finale marked by quintessentially British weather, with the skies relenting only briefly for the ensemble to walk the red carpet before the storm returned — a suitably dramatic backdrop for the farewell to one of Britain’s most enduring screen sagas.

Outside the Odeon Luxe, producer Gareth Neame said the show’s global success came from its “expressly British” mix of class structure, family drama, comedy and romance. “I think first and foremost is hoping that the fans love this movie and feel it’s the final button on the whole thing,” he noted. While stressing there are “no real plans” for more, Neame acknowledged that...

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Review: Overstuffed but Endearing Film Provides Fitting Closure to Devoted Fans
Image
“Sometimes I feel that the past is a more comfortable place than the future,” muses one of the characters in the presumably final Downton Abbey film. That sentiment probably rings very true for the devoted fans of the long-running franchise that has included six television seasons and three theatrical films. While societal change is very much afoot in this installment set in 1930, Downton aficionados will be relieved to learn that nearly all of the familiar characters return (save, of course, for the deceased ones, and even they show up in one form or another) for this swan song reprising the familiar themes, subtle humor and elegant dramatics.

It’s a new character, however, that gives Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale its comedic juice, and he’s a real-life one at that: Noel Coward (wonderfully played by Arty Froushan), who swoops in to provide the sort of barbed witticisms that Maggie Smith...

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Review: Scandal, Money And Changing Times Mark An Elegant And Bittersweet End To Iconic Series
Image
The title says it all.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is the end of the beloved tale of the Crawley family over several years, first as a limited and then regular TV drama series, and then as major motion pictures, with this the third and apparently last of them. Writer-producer Julian Fellowes has created such a memorable group of characters it is hard to finally say goodbye to them, but in this witty and wise finale it is nice to report it is a goodbye worth saying, with somehow each of the members of this massive ensemble cast getting their moment in the sunset. Even though the absence of the great late Maggie Smith as the inimitable Violet is felt, it really isn’t because she is often mentioned and there is a wonderful and touching dedication to her at the end. This is all about a changing of the guard at Downton Abbey,...

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025) Movie Review: A Charming, Gleefully Sendoff To Julian Fellowes’ Ensemble Drama
Image
It would not be insulting or inaccurate to describe the trilogy of “Downton Abbey” features as the most expensive fan films ever made. While it is not uncommon for there to be theatrical releases inspired by recent hit shows, the “Downton Abbey” films are a direct continuation of Julian Fellowes’ acclaimed PBS drama, and largely conform to the same style. Beyond their expanded running time and more robust ensemble of guest stars, the “Downton Abbey” films are extended episodes of the show, and would be largely incomprehensible to those who aren’t familiar with the source material. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” may not reach the psychological depths of its two predecessors,...

Summer Box Office Won’t Reach $4 Billion Milestone After All
Image
Heading into the summer, Hollywood was bullish that several promising blockbusters would be able to propel ticket sales above $4 billion for only the second time since the pandemic. But as the season winds to a close, it’s clear the domestic box office will fall short of that lofty benchmark.

Overall revenues from May 1 to Aug. 24 have reached $3.53 billion, according to Comscore. Popcorn season is typically the most profitable period for the movie business, with revenues regularly accounting for around 40% of the annual box office. But domestic ticket sales have only surpassed the $4 billion figure once since Covid lockdowns, during the glory days of “Barbenheimer” in 2023.

Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” is the highest-grossing film of the summer with $421 million in North America and $1.03 billion globally. It’s the only 2025 release from a Hollywood studio to cross $1 billion. Other bright spots were “Jurassic World Rebirth” with $844 million, “How to Train Your Dragon” with $626 million,...

‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle’ Building Toward $20M+ Opening – Box Office Early Look
Image
Sony Crunchyroll’s anime title Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle hit three week tracking yesterday and the outlook for the Sept. 12 theatrical release stands between a solid $20M-$29M.

The news comes at a time as Sony Pictures Animation/Netflix’s Kpop Demon Hunters Singalong is expected to post a surprise $15M+ opening, potentially unseating New Line’s third weekend of Weapons for No. 1.

Unaided awareness and first choice are strong on Infinity Castle with men under 25. If the pic hits anything north of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train‘s $21.2M opening from 2021, it’s arguably a record start for an anime movie stateside.

We already told you that after tickets went on sale a week ago for Infinity Castle, the top three chains were already reaping around $10M in presales, which in Fandango’s books, is an anime movie advance tickets sales record.

‘Weapons’ Is a Box Office Hit. Now Movie Theaters Are Bracing for a Bleak Three Months
Image
Every August, Alamo Drafthouse prepares for a late-summer slowdown.

“We joke that weekday business gets soft because parents have to think about buying their kids a new backpack,” says the theater chain’s chief revenue officer, Mike Sherrill.

Studios must have the same thought because the calendar from August through early October is always sparse, at least compared with the glut of new offerings in June and July.

“There’s not a gigantic tentpole in the next six weeks,” Sherrill says. “But it’s our job to remind folks that just because ‘Avatar 3’ doesn’t come out until December doesn’t mean there aren’t great films before then.”

On paper, business over the next few weeks looks bleak. But before anyone writes them off, it’s worth remembering this year has been defined by upended box office norms. Few predicted that DC’s “Superman” ($595 million) would outgross Marvel’s...

Now, the series will be wrapping up next month with the release of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, hitting theaters on September 12.

She was asked in a new interview about her character, and she revealed one wish she had throughout her time filming.

“I wish at times she could have had more interesting stories,” she told The Guardian. However, she understands that a woman at that time would not have had “any more political or social power, because it just wouldn’t be accurate to the time.”

When asked if it was difficult to play, she responded, that “at time, yes….I think as a contemporary woman, it is hard to feel the straitjacket of that period.”

She was also asked about the death of Dame Maggie Smith,...

‘Downton Abbey’ Star Shares Surprising Thoughts on Making ‘The Grand Finale’ Without Legendary Departed Co-Star
Image
Elizabeth McGovern doesn’t feel like Downton Abbey is missing one of its most iconic figures. The actress, who has played Cora Crawley since the show first premiered in 2010, recently reflected on filming Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale without her late costar, Dame Maggie Smith — and her perspective might surprise fans.

“She’s still very much in the atmosphere,” McGovern said in an interview, insisting that Smith’s presence continues to permeate the franchise even after her passing in September 2024. Smith’s Dowager Countess, Violet Crawley, died at the conclusion of 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era, which meant that the third (and reportedly final) film was already positioned to move on without her.

“I don’t feel there’s a big hole,” McGovern said. “In fact, in some ways, it sort of freed up the rest of the narrative to have a flow, because it’s not stopping for her moments.

Image
Now that Season 3 of The Gilded Age is over, the time is ripe to start speculating about Season 4. There are several threads that need to be picked up when the HBO series returns, but there's one particular character whose future is giving off major Downton Abbey vibes. The Gilded Age and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes himself spoke about it during an interview with TV Line. The writer and showrunner addressed the timing and location of The Gilded Age, which would certainly make a crossover possible. However, this is as far as Fellowes is willing to go for now. He stated:

“Well, obviously there’s an opportunity to [stage a crossover], because they are both in England.

‘Hostel’ TV Adaptation Starring Paul Giamatti Finds Home at Peacock
Image
Peacock is offering a place to stay for a Hostel series project from filmmaker Eli Roth and star Paul Giamatti.

The NBCUniversal streamer will develop the project, which is based on Roth’s mid-2000s horror movies about an underground network of wealthy people who kidnap and torture young tourists staying in hostels. The show, which THR reported was in the works in 2024 (but without a home), comes from Fifth Season.

Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Giamatti, an avowed horror fan, is set to star in the show, though details of his role are being kept under wraps. The Hostel series project is described as a present-day take on the concept.

Roth, who wrote and directed 2005’s Hostel and 2007’s Hostel: Part II, is set to write, direct and executive produce the Peacock project. The films’ producers, Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs, are also EPs. (A third Hostel film, made without Roth’s involvement,...

'Downton Abbey' Star Teases a Potential Prequel Series as 'The Gilded Age' Sparks Rumors
Image
Elizabeth McGovernis one of the finest actors to have graced the beloved television series turned box office blockbuster, Downton Abbey. As Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, McGovern's strong yet utterly heartwarming presence wholly resonates with the mission statement of Julian Fellowes'period drama, and will do so one final time later this year in The Grand Finale, scheduled to premiere on September 12.

Ahead of the movie scheduled to be the last in the series, McGovern spoke to Deadline about her character's journey, her time as an actress, and, perhaps most intriguingly, what the future might look like for Downton Abbey. It is expected that the doors will close for good on the iconic countryside manor in The Grand Finale, but it will surely be all too tempting for higher-ups to find a way to turn Downton Abbey into its next money-spinning era. After being questioned if this will be the last in Downton Abbey's journey,...

Downton Abbey Star Teases Potential Franchise Continuation As The Grand Finale Signals The End Of An Era
Image
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale star Elizabeth McGovern has teased a way in which Julian Fellowes' ever-popular period drama franchise could continue. For 15 years, Downton Abbey has delighted, awed, and surprised us all, leaving behind a few broken hearts and plenty of love in its wake. Now, it seems the story of the Crawley family is finally coming to an end – or is it?

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is slated to be the third and final movie in the Downton Abbey franchise, as the Crawley family is thrust into the political and financial turmoil of the 1930s. It might not just be the audience saying goodbye to Downton, however; the Crawleys might just be forced to say a final farewell to the estate they've called home for generations, too.

Of course, in this age of remakes, reboots, and endless sequels, the question on everyone's minds is whether The Grand...

Breaking Baz: ‘Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern On Saying Goodbye To Lady Cora And Chronicling Ava Gardner On Stage
Image
Exclusive: Elizabeth McGovern is fired up when she talks about sensuous silver screen goddess Ava Gardner, whom the Downton Abbey star portrays in a stage show that hits New York next week. Gardner, she argues, endured the “objectification of the female body, which is the basis of the entire movie business.”

Being a movie star in the 1940s, 1950s and into the ’60s took its toll on Gardner, who escaped her mink-lined cage in California to spend her final years in England residing in a grand apartment close to Harrods’ department store.

Ava: The Secret Conversations, beginning at New York’s City Center on July 29, is based on a series of tapes the writer Peter Evans recorded with the one-time screen siren in London over a four-year period beginning in 1988 which he then had published in 2013, more than two decades after Gardner’s death in 1990.

The show moves to Chicago...
