Kachi Kachi Yama

Kachi Kachi Yama is a most peculiar animated short. The story is dark and almost aggressive, though it should probably be taken as comedic with a light satirical edge. It introduces several Western cultural icons of the era, including Alain Delon, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, The Beatles, and Marilyn Monroe, building the narrative around these characters. Visually, the film resembles a 1960s cartoon brought to life using the limited animation technique, where only selected elements are animated while most of the screen remains static. Interestingly, this film sometimes flips the usual approach: instead of static backgrounds with animated character elements-such as the Beatles' mouths-we also see static characters with animated backgrounds, like falling raindrops. The ending leans heavily into imagery reminiscent of early James Bond films before shifting into visuals that could almost be interpreted as Japanese nationalism.
