2025 is halfway over, and for the most part, films this year have been massively disappointing, including the supposedly final Mission: Impossible film and most of the Netflix original films that came out this year. While it is true that most Netflix original films that were released this year are not that good, there were also some extremely entertaining films, from Tom Hardy‘s gritty action thriller film Havoc to Vince Vaughn‘s touching comedy film Nonnas. So, we decided to compile a list of the best Netflix original films that came out in 2025.

Exterritorial Credit – Netflix

Exterritorial is a German action thriller film written and directed by Christian Zübert. The 2025 film follows Sara Wulf, a former Special Forces soldier visiting the US Consulate in Germany with her son, but when he suddenly goes missing, she does everything she can to find him.

Netflix Announces Release Date for New Project Based on Best-Selling Book
Image
Rom-coms are a genre that leaves fans wanting more, and Netflix has heard that loud and clear. The streaming service has been focusing on the genre in the last few months, releasing hits like La Dolce Villa, The Life List, as well as Kate Hudson's series The Running Point and Kristen Bell and Adam Brody's Nobody Wants This.

Looking at the viewership numbers alone, Netflix wants to continue to release quality rom-coms and will do that with an exciting new project: People We Meet on Vacation. The novel, which was published in 2021, comes from popular romance author Emily Henry, who has several adaptations in the works. However, Netflix has confirmed that the first one will be People We Meet on Vacation, which is set for release on Jan. 9, 2026, per Tudum.

People We Meet on Vacation tells the story of Poppy and Alex's summer trip, and has found its...

Netflix's New Drama About a Mother-Daughter Bond Becomes a Hit Despite Poor Reviews
Image
Netflix has been focusing on big-budget productions, with action and visual effects-filled projects topping the charts. However, the streaming giant has proven an interest in rom-coms and dramas, as well.

In recent months, Netflix has released several memorable titles, whether shows like Kristen Bell and Adam Brody's Nobody Wants This and Kate Hudson's comedy Running Point, or romantic films like Scott Foley's Italian dream getaway La Dolce Villa. Although the streamer has seen a lot of interest in big-budget productions like The Electric State, the interest in dramas and rom-coms is obvious. That is now highlighted by its latest release, The Life List, which topped the charts the past week, per Tudum.

The Life List premiered on Netflix on Mar. 28, and it had two full days to make an impression on the week between Mar. 24 and 30. An impression it did because the romantic drama topped the charts...

Streaming Ratings: ‘SNL’ Hits Charts After 50th Anniversary Special
Image
The big first-night audience for Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special carried over to streaming the week after — giving the show its first-ever appearance on the Nielsen streaming charts.

SNL, which streams on Peacock, notched 863 million minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Feb. 17-23. That was good for seventh place overall and third among library series. The show has an absurdly large library — 1,109 episodes spanning half a century — but Nielsen notes that 68 percent of viewing for the week was for episodes from the current season, including the anniversary special.

Netflix’s Zero Day and Prime Video’s Reacher finished first and second overall for the week after premiering on Feb. 20. Zero Day held a slight lead with 1.84 billion minutes of viewing to 1.81 billion for Reacher. Love Is Blind (1.42 billion minutes), Bluey (1.05 billion) and Family Guy (1.01 billion) also scored more than a billion viewing mintues.

Streaming Ratings: ‘Love Is Blind’ Has Big Season 8 Opening
Image
Netflix’s Love Is Blind came out of the gate strong with the Valentine’s Day premiere of its eighth season.

The dating show accumulated 1.07 billion viewing minutes in the United States for the week of Feb. 10-16, according to Nielsen. That’s better than the premiere week totals for the past two cycles: Season six had 907 million minutes in the same week a year ago, and season seven opened to 1.05 billion minutes in early October.

Nielsen counts viewing of all episodes toward a show’s weekly tally, but the ratings service notes that 95 percent — our about 1.02 billion minutes — of Love Is Blind’s total was for the new batch of episodes that premiered Feb. 14.

Sweet Magnolias (1.16 billion minutes), which finished second overall a week earlier, moved into the top spot for Feb. 10-16 with a nine percent increase in viewing week to week. The final episodes of Cobra Kai...

“Zero Day” jumped to the top of Netflix’s most-watched TV list in its second week on the streamer.

The Robert De Niro-led political thriller series sat atop the Top 10 English TV list during the week of Feb. 24 with 17.9 million views. Despite a slight decline in its viewership from its debut week — during which “Zero Day” logged 19.1 million views — the show climbed up the list from its No. 2 position last week, when it failed to surpass viewership for “American Murder: Gabby Petito.”

This week, “American Murder” slid to the No. 2 position with 11.3 million views, down drastically from last week’s viewership of 31.3 million views. Still, viewership for “Gabby Petito” exceeded that of “Running Point,” which debuted in the No. 3 spot on the list with 9.3 million views.

Image
Big studios are always in competition with streaming services. However, the success some titles have on online platforms proves there is a way for all films to become successful, even when they're not big hits at the box office.

Netflix is one of the most open streaming services when it comes to its viewership data, releasing updated numbers every week. The reports shared by the giant streaming platform have often highlighted that big-budget productions are also popular online, but box office flops and titles with poor ratings get another chance as well. Per Tudum, the 2019 underrated sci-fi horror Don't Let Go found success on streaming, debuting in the Top 10 for the week between Feb. 17 and 23.

‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Sails to No. 1 on Streaming Top 10 | Charts
Image
Last week’s streaming chart had a very clear theme: in the week of Valentine’s Day, viewers were choosing Netflix and chill. Yet there was a big debut missing from the chart: the HBO/Max hit “The White Lotus,” which premiered on Sunday, Feb. 16.

“The White Lotus” viewers must have been busy that Sunday night, because they caught up in a big way. With a full week of viewership under its belt, “The White Lotus” is the most-watched streaming program on the latest Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report.

Coming in at No. 2 this week is the Netflix true-crime doc “American Murder: Gabby Petito,” as a deep-dive into the case that gripped the country. It’s followed by “Zero Day,” a conspiracy thriller series starring Robert De Niro. The new Netflix original drew big viewership numbers, with 2.1 million U.S. households watching in the first four days it was available...

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg's $400 Million Action Adventure Film Is A Hit On Streaming
Image
Tom Holland has proven his acting skills in the action genre with his take on the beloved comic book character Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, but that wasn't his only hit film. In 2022, he joined forces with Mark Wahlberg for an adaptation of the video game franchise Uncharted.

The movie was a big success at the box office, and it received good feedback from the fans. However, it didn't impress the critics. The action-adventure video game series was first released in 2007 with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, created by Amy Henning and developed by Naughty Dog. Three years later,Uncharted became a hit on Netflix, taking over the global charts at number two, Tudum reports.

Huge changes in Netflix top five movies and shows for week to Feb 26, 2025
Image
There are lots of changes from last week's top five lists of most viewed shows and movies on Netflix. The latest details are now on Tudum and reveal eight new entries across the two lists. Time then to take a closer look at whats new and the two that remained.

With lots of movies being added over recent weeks and a few departing from the platform, some changes were almost inevitable. Though I didn't expect to see just one remain unchanged from last week. As is often the case, some favorite old characters make a reappearance, too.

Likewise, in terms of shows there were some big hitters arriving on our screens recently. That's definitely had an impact this week with just one remaining from the previous week. The list highlights the ongoing popularity of a docuseries to get behind a story we know and fits well alongside the demand for great drama and thrillers.

NBC Dominates Linear Top 5 Amid ‘SNL50’ Boost | Charts

In the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, which was more popular for TV viewers: romance or action? For streaming viewers, the tried and true “Netflix and chill” held strong as the streamer accounts for eight of the Top 10 most-watched programs on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report.

Sitting atop this week’s streaming chart is “Aftermath,” a 2024 action flick that accomplishes the rare feat of being the most-watched program while also being panned by nearly everyone who has seen it. The movie managed to squeeze ahead of Netflix’s clear Valentine’s Day tie-in title, “La Dolce Villa,” a rom-com about a father finding love in Italy as he helps his daughter renovate a fixer-upper of a villa.

We got back to action with the next few spots, starting with “Surviving Black Hawk Down.” The docuseries looks at the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, which served as the inspiration for the 2001 film “Black Hawk Down.

‘Uncharted’ Is No. 2 on Netflix for Some Reason
Image
The Netflix Effect is weird. Whether it’s “Suits” or “Madame Web” or a Netflix original like “Baby Reindeer” that turns into a sleeper hit, people tend to gravitate toward some truly random stuff on Netflix. It’s the case most weeks on the Netflix Top 10 charts, but this week even we’re at a loss.

Coming in at No. 2 on Netflix’s Top 10 English Films for the week of February 17 was none other than “Uncharted,” the 2022 Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg adventure-thriller based on the PlayStation video game franchise. Because…why not?

You guys watched it 10.5 million times this week, behind only the Netflix original rom-com “La Dolce Villa,” which hit No. 1 for the second week in a row post-Valentine’s Day with 14.1 million views. “Uncharted” previously landed on Netflix on August 5, 2022, and it spent three consecutive weeks on the Netflix Top 10 charts at that time, reaching 23 million viewing hours in a single week.

The 2025 SAG Awards failed to crack into Netflix’s Top 10 TV programs for the week.

The livestream of the awards show, which streamed Sunday, Feb. 23, was not included in the streamer’s Top 10 viewership list for the week of Feb. 17, meaning that viewership for the SAG Awards was exceeded by the Feb. 17 installment of WWE’s Monday Night Raw, which took the No. 10 spot on the TV list. While Netflix has not released exact viewing figures for the SAG Awards, it can be assumed the show saw less than the 2.8 million views seen by Raw.

Netflix’s Gabby Petito Doc Tops Weekly TV List Bolstered By Strong Unscripted Performance; ‘Zero Day’ Debuts At No. 2

Audiences are seemingly still enthralled by Gabby Petito’s disappearance, flocking to Netflix’s latest docuseries about the tragedy nearly four years later.

American Murder: Gabby Petito put up a massive 31.3M views from February 17 to February 23, reaching No. 1 on the English-language TV list globally. It was among the Top 10 in 90 countries, per Netflix.

It was a fairly strong week overall for Netflix’s unscripted content, even amid the release of some flashy scripted series. American Murder: Gabby Petito was one of five non-fiction series to hit the Top 10 English-language TV list,

The Search For Instagram’s Worst Con Artist came in third place with 5.5M views, followed by the latest season of Love Is Blind in fourth place with 5M views. An Overlooked 2018 True Crime Drama Is Sitting High On Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Netflix has been serving up even more questionable streaming fare than usual of late. Dylan Sprouse's "Die Hard on a bridge" movie, "Aftermath," broke Netflix's film charts recently despite being what one viewer described as "visual cancer." It followed Amy Schumer's similar domination of the Netflix charts with her movie "Kinda Pregnant," a film that garnered a 28% Rotten Tomatoes score. That all transpired in the wake of Cameron Diaz's absolute domination of Netflix with her first movie in 11 years, "Back in Action," itself a 29-percenter on Rt. As such, the arrival of a half-decent true crime drama on the streamer's movie charts is a welcome development.

"Trial by Fire" is a biographical drama directed by Edward Zwick, the filmmaker responsible for one of the best Civil War movies ever made in "Glory." This overlooked 2018 effort is based upon the article of the same name by journalist David Grann,...

Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding's New Action Film Becomes a Hit on Streaming
Image
The action genre is widely popular, whether in theaters, streaming, or on TV. This is often proven in the Netflix charts, and Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding's latest action film doesn't disappoint.

Netflix has had a series of hit action original movies, including 2020's Extraction, 2021's Red Notice, which is Netflix's most popular film in the English language, and 2022's The Gray Man. However, not all films are Netflix originals, and Netflix has a lot of success with licensed action films, including Mission: Impossible, currently in the charts. Now a new hybrid released film, 2024's Aftermath, has become a hit globally, per Tudum.

Welcome back to another comprehensive breakdown of the Netflix top 10s for the week ending February 16th. It was a very busy week in the Netflix top 10s, but in the case of Cobra Kai, it’s difficult to call the show’s final batch of episodes a success or disappointment given its complex release schedule. Here’s your full top 10 report covering The Witcher’s new anime, La Dolce Villa, Honeymoon Crasher, Love is Blind, Surviving Black Hawk Down, Cassandra, and more!

Note: In this report of Netflix’s hours viewed from February 10th, 2025 to February 16th, 2025, we’ll use “Complete Viewings Equivalent,” or Cve, expressed in millions. David Oyelowo Sci-Fi Thriller 'Don't Let Go' Is Climbing Netflix Charts
Image
Time travel films have always been popular with viewers, and over the years, there have been several distinctive stories produced by Hollywood. One such film, the 2019 thriller Don't Let Go, has made a surprising comeback, recently soaring into Netflix's top ten charts after being added to the platform. Since its addition to Netflix on February 16, Don't Let Go has quickly climbed the streaming charts, reaching #4 in just two days. It's certainly not a small feat considering the fact that it has surpassed popular films like Kinda Pregnant and Rambo: Last Blood, both of which have done fairly well since their debut a week ago. Meanwhile, La Dolce Villa, Aftermath, and Trial by Fire are in the top three on the streaming chart, with Honeymoon Crasher, Uncle Drew, and Back in Action trailing closely behind, albeit it's been over a week since they have been added to the streaming service.

‘La Dolce Villa’ Romances Its Way To Top Of Netflix Charts; ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6C Underperforms In Debut Week
Image
Audiences rang in the weekend of love with Netflix’s latest romantic comedy, La Dolce Villa.

The film, which was the most-watched title of the week in addition to its spot atop the English films list, secured 19.8M views from February 10 to 16. Last week’s No. 1 film, Amy Schumer’s Kinda Pregnant, fell to second place with 13.7M views.

After a strong few weeks in the top two spots, Back in Action came in at sixth place, though it still managed 5.7M views, which is decent considering it debuted a month ago.

On the TV side of things, Surviving Black Hawk Down took the No. 1 spot with 7.9M views.

Meanwhile, Cobra Kai‘s final episodes generated a pretty low 5.9M views, which is down pretty significantly from the first week of viewing for the beginning of Season 6. However, Season 6 has struggled to generate the viewing from previous seasons since it...

‘Nosferatu’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Both Raced to Streaming at Warp Speed
Image
“Nosferatu” (Focus) and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount), two of the biggest hits last Christmas, are both coming to their studios’ streaming platforms less than two months after their theatrical release. That is a radical decrease in the amount of normal time before home subscribers can see a hit film for no extra charge.

In a week that saw four different films released no earlier than January 12 make the VOD top 10 lists, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” (Lionsgate) currently is the most popular. At Netflix, the Italian-set rom-com “La Dolce Villa” capitalized on Valentine’s Day to take the #1 spot.

With the absence of any same-week streaming charts for all services, IndieWire normally concentrates on top 10 charts for VOD (which usually is the first stage of home availability) and Netflix’s same-day list. But the gravity of these two announcements overshadows our normal coverage.

We surveyed the average time before...

Netflix Cco says Oppenheimer would have done just as well on streamer
Image
A three-hour movie about the guy who brought the world the atomic bomb wouldn’t seem like a contender for one of the highest-grossing movies of its year, but Oppenheimer was just that. And without that sort of theatrical release, it may not have had the impact that it did…Unless you put Oppenheimer on Netflix, of course, in which it still would have been a massive hit. Just ask Netflix!

Recently sitting down with Puck’s Matt Belloni, Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria laid out the strategy the company would have taken had it been behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. “We would have done an amazing qualifying run. So many people obviously would have watched it. It was a great movie. And I think it would have had that.”

Comparing ticket sales to streaming numbers is almost impossible, as there are just too many factors to take into account.

Now streaming on Netflix, the movie centers on Eric Field (Scott Foley), a dad who rushes to Italy after his daughter tells him that she’s purchasing a home there for one euro and plans to rebuild it herself. Naturally, he has to stop what he feels is a wildly poor decision.

But once he gets there, the two are able to find common ground and reconnect after the passing of the family’s matriarch. Eric even finds love along the way.

So, here are all the people you’ll need to keep track of in “La Dolce Villa.”

‘La Dolce Villa’ Movie Cast And Character Guide
Mark Waters at an event for Bad Santa 2 (2016)
Directed by Mark Waters, La Dolce Villa, the 2025 Netflix rom-com, is the story of a father who turns up in Italy in pursuit of his young daughter, who wants to buy a house. With a close-knit cast, La Dolce Villa moves like a Tuscany romance, replete with vintage villas, charming medieval streets, wine and gelato, and a grand fresco. A new addition to the array of Valentine’s Day rom-coms, La Dolce Villa is surely going to make your heats a lot more merry.

Scott Foley as Eric

As the well-meaning but anxious father in La Dolce Villa, we get to see American actor and director Scott Foley. Foley has been a part of the slasher franchise Scream as Roman Bridger. He has also starred in multiple TV shows like Felicity, Scandal, and Scrubs. The 2014 American black comedy, Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife, is the sole directorial venture of Foley. As a misfit,...

'La Dolce Villa' Stars Got Scolded for Their Antics
Image
The phrase “quiet on the set” was stretched to the limit during the upbeat shoot of La Dolce Villawhen director Mark Waters (Mean Girls) had to ask his costars gently but firmly to, well, pipe down. Scott Foley (Scandal) and Maia Reficco (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), who play father and daughter in the heartwarming Netflix original comedy, bonded so well on set that they had trouble dialing down the banter and laughs. “Look,” Foley noted with a smile in a recent MovieWeb interview, “it's not that we're unprofessional, right? I just want to get that out of the way right now.” He added:

“It’s important to develop a rapport with whoever you're working with, and each relationship is different. And playing the father to this daughter, I thought it was important that we have a shorthand, that there was sort of inside jokes that we had. We very...

La Dolce Villa Review: A Sunlit Escape into Italian Romance
Image
La Dolce Villa arrives as a lighthearted romantic comedy with an escape-to-Italy vibe. The story follows an American father who flies to Italy when his daughter decides, on a whim, to purchase a one-euro villa. This setup hints at a clash between American caution and Italian zest, presenting a narrative that treats love, family, and the lure of a different way of life as interconnected threads.

The film finds its home on a streaming service, a move that caters to viewers seeking a relaxed, cheerful experience. The creative team behind it has a history of crafting feel-good tales that mix travel fantasies with romantic mishaps.

Their previous projects have explored similar territories, offering a familiar yet refreshing take on destination romances. Their work here captures the spirit of lighthearted storytelling while playing with familiar conventions in unexpected ways.

Netflix’s ‘La Dolce Villa’ Filmed in These Idyllic Italian Towns
Image
Netflix’s latest destination romance “La Dolce Villa” largely takes place in a beautiful old Italian town called Montezara, and it really is beautiful. Unfortunately, it’s also not actually a real place. So, where did this film actually shoot?

Now streaming on Netflix, the movie centers on Eric Field (Scott Foley), a dad who rushes to Italy after his daughter Olivia (Maia Reficco) informs him that she’ll be purchasing a home for one euro and moving there, as part of an effort to bring in new residents.

While there, he not only gets closer to his daughter, but also finds love, as well as his old passion for cooking. Because that’s just what Italy does to people.

And for the record, yes, “La Dolce Villa” was actually filmed in Italy. Montezara is just a fake town. According to directo Mark Waters, the town they primarily shot in was San Quirico D’orcia.

‘La Dolce Villa’: Can You Really Buy Houses in Italy for One Euro?
Image
Netflix’s latest rom-com is here in the form of “La Dolce Villa,” and like any story, plays into the fantasy of some viewers. But there’s one element that’s actually very real and possible — buying a home in Italy for next to nothing.

Now streaming, the movie centers on Eric Field (Scott Foley), a dad who rushes to Italy after his daughter Olivia (Maia Reficco) informs him that she’s purchasing a villa for one euro, as part of an initiative to help bring new residents to town. And while that may seem like a fun story concocted for screen, it’s actually a real initiative that people can take advantage of.

The program has been running for a few years and following the 2024 election, the Italian village Ollolai started offering homes for one euro to those who might want to exit the country due to Donald Trump.

‘La Dolce Villa’ Director Mark Waters Talks ‘Killing People’s Rom-Com Careers’ and ‘Freakier Friday’
Image
Rom-coms have been no small piece of director Mark Waters’s career. He’s the man behind films including “Just Like Heaven” and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” he produced “500 Days of Summer,” and more.

But, even with a new rom-com out on Netflix this week, if you ask Waters himself, he wouldn’t necessarily tout himself as a king in the genre.

“I think I’m the person who’s responsible for killing people’s rom-com career,” Waters joked with TheWrap. “Because I know that Mark Ruffalo, after [‘Just Like Heaven’], I don’t think he did another rom-com. And after ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,’ I think Matthew McConaughey never did another one.”

In fairness, that’s because both actors went on to star in much heavier fare, intentionally so. And Waters knows that, saying that “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” was a “bridging” role for McConaughey, as the character...
